How about a large screened iPad running MacOS and ARM? MacOS is becoming more like iOS all the time.

Apple dont kid yourself. An iPad isnt a computer as long as you limit the hardware connections and run its own set of apps.
 
I wouldn't be happy either if I got a curved iPad, but when you make 13 million units of any product in a quarter not all of them are gonna be perfect. I hope you got it replaced quickly.

They wouldn't replace it, was very similar to all theirs on display. Not A big deal

Ipads have come a long way to being useful as more than a consumption device. They added keyboards, and multi-tasking and now the pencil (pointing device) even basics of windowing applications to allow more than one application at a time... As time goes by we keep getting closer and closer to a device that has all the components of a traditional computer (mac) yet has different compromises...

It's interesting to watch the mac become more iPad like and the iPad to become more mac like. I understand people's frustration because the iPad hasn't reached feature parity with the mac in many ways, but with every update they become a little bit closer. It remains to be seen if in its final incarnation an iPad is any different than a Mac with a touchscreen.
 
I'm not really sure what is exciting anymore on Tim's vocabulary, heck he even changed the word magical, courage etc. Maybe he's hinting us a more colorful iPads and new pink cover. iPad should have been an evolving product instead of releasing a new feature and sold it as a different product. They're doing the same thing on Macbooks as well and I wouldn't be surprised if they do that to every product in the future. But people keeps on buying them and that's the only proof they need to keep Cook as the CEO. Money, money, money!!!
 
The thing nobody wants to see is that "phones" are simply cannibalizing on the sales of tablets due to their size. A lot of people just couldn't be bothered to have or pick up an ipad when they have enough big display in their pocket. (Including me). I believe the tablet market has bright future, however the devices themselves need to be bit modified.
For myself, I would much rather be on my 12.9 inch iPad Pro than on my iPhone 7 Plus.
But that's just me I guess.
 
I often wonder why a sane person would buy an Android tablet with basically zero optimized software and not an iPad.

iPad native software is fantastic, and I think about music, games and kids categories.

All the software and hardware pieces are set for a checkmate: as more and more touch-natives start to enter education and work, iPad sales will boom to a level no one can remotely fathom today. Cook is right all along about the iPad.

Mac sales grow despite 50% of the categories not being updated for several YEARS (suckers), iPad sales continue to decline, despite our desperate attempts to mimic Surface tablets. Which not many people buy either outside of businesses.

Therefore double-down on iPad is FUTURE OF COMPUTING. Prepare the 15" iPad Super Pro and a new iPad to fit between mini and Pro for 20% higher SRP! Ignore other market segments even tho Apple TV is dropping too despite Apps as TV channels disrupts cable industry enabling cord-cutters, Apple Music will have TV shows and movies! Shows about music and uh, apps. Because app store revenue is also growing or something.

As long as we make money nothing will change.

I stopped regularly using my iPad Mini once I got the 6S Plus. I'm looking though to replace my aging MB Air with the next generation of iPad Pro, if there is a way to use a second larger screen when working at the office. Hopefully Apple recognizes this important use case.

Bottom Line, Sales of iPhone plus models are also sales of iPads. So the stats don't tell the real story.

come on...the latest imac it still is an awesome mac....if you upgrade yours will take adv of the new dgpu and that screen. I am on the 2014 model so im still waiting for the new one, but you,you have an old one with weak display :) not the imac is the problem,the mac mini/mac pro are

While the iPhone 7 Plus helped Apple achieve record-breaking earnings results last quarter, iPad sales remained on a downward trend.

Apple earlier this week reported that it sold 13.1 million iPads in the first quarter, which encompasses the holiday shopping season, down from 16.1 million in the year-ago quarter. As noted by Jason Snell at Six Colors, that's nearly half as many iPads as the 26 million that Apple sold during the same period in 2013.

Apple isn't the only tablet maker suffering from declining sales. The overall category continued to shrink by between 9% and 20% worldwide compared to the same quarter a year ago, placing pressure on Samsung and other vendors, according to the latest estimates from research firms IDC and Strategy Analytics.

Price remains a "key sticking point" for consumers looking to adopt high-end tablets such as the iPad Pro, which has created room for smaller vendors to capitalize on low-priced tablets, according to Strategy Analytics. Lenovo, for example, shipped an estimated 4.2 million tablets and grew 21% year-over-year in the quarter.

"2-in-1 tablets are a hot market segment but price remains a key factor in consumer behaviors around PC and tablet replacement devices, which is evident in lower shipments of iPad Pro and Surface Pro 4 devices in the quarter," said Eric Smith, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics.

IDC said the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini, rather than the iPad Pro lineup, continued to account for the majority of Apple's tablet shipments. For every ten slate tablets shipped, Apple sold only one iPad Pro, the research firm said. Apple does not officially break out iPad sales on a model-by-model basis.

Apple said it underestimated holiday demand for the iPad quarter, and that compounded a supply issue with one of its suppliers. Apple also drew down channel inventory by 700,000 units, so its results are not as bad as they look. Last year, Apple increased channel inventory by 900,000 units as the iPad Pro launched.

Apple also said the iPad has an 85% share of the U.S. tablet market priced above $200, so the tablet is doing exceptionally well in the premium segment that the company has targeted. iPad also undoubtedly remains the world's best-selling tablet, with a comfortable lead over its rivals, based on industry estimates.

Samsung was Apple's closest competitor with an estimated 8.1 million tablets shipped in the quarter for 12.8% market share, according to Strategy Analytics. Lenovo, Huawei, and Amazon rounded off the top five with an estimated 4.2 million, 3.7 million, and 3.4 million shipments in the quarter respectively.

As always, it is important to acknowledge that these are estimated figures, and that shipments do not necessarily reflect sales. There are also significant discrepancies between the IDC and Strategy Analytics datasets--particularly as it relates to Amazon--so treat the numbers with a proverbial grain of salt.

Apple has effectively marketed the iPad Pro as a computer in the post-PC world, but the company's second annual decline in iPad sales led Apple podcaster Marco Arment to raise an interesting question: what if the iPad isn't the future of computing?One thing is for certain: consumers are not upgrading their tablets nearly as often as smartphones. In order to reignite iPad sales, Apple will have to add compelling new features that entice the large base of existing iPad owners to swap out their current "good enough" tablet for a new one.

"We've got some exciting things coming on iPad and I'm optimistic about where things are headed," said Apple CEO Tim Cook. "Customer satisfaction is through the roof. iPad Pro at 99%. So I see a lot of good things and hope for better results."

The iPad uses an iOS OPTIMIZED for the iPhone ... a whole lot of real estate goes unused because of this.
iOS is optimized for the mobile Touch interface which includes iPhones and iPads. You notice that all of Apple's OS's are separated by their interface, whereas the core frameworks and OS are the same, and that goes for MacOS as well as tvOS, WatchOS and iOS.

Why would you buy a PC/Mac:

To get work done!

Still on iPad 2nd gen and only use it for "consuming" and play a few games.
The device is so well built (and in a case as I am a klutz) that it will last forever
short of having to replace the battery or some other component.

As others posted the larger phones easily take over for an iPad.

Until they make iPads with a real OS X, detachable keyboard with haptic feel (not typing on glass) and a full OS X experience these will keep going down in sales.

As for exciting and pipeline. It has been a long time to see anything good.
 
The large market gains by Lenovo and Huawei indicate that the segment has possibility at a lower price point.

I think if the larger iPads (not mini) had 512GB and could support all the features and accessories of a Belkin (or similar) Thunderbolt dock, many really would use it as a laptop / desktop replacement. I know I would.

Sigh, not this again. People in Cook's position are paid largely in stock and options. They do not get to decide when to sell, either. This has to be done entirely on a preprogrammed schedule filed with the SEC.
Many sales are also to pay the taxes on the stock. People forget that the government wants their taxes in cash and not stock, so fraction to cover taxes has to be sold unless he has that much disposable cash lying around.

I suspect that stagnating iPad sales are because people don't need to upgrade them as much as they once did.
iPads are exceptionally well built imo and apart from the iPad 3 they appear to last for years. Phones are usually replaced as contracts are renewed (12/24 months), iPads aren't.
I've had my Air 2 since it launched and it's still running like a champ, does everything I need. My grandmother has an Air 1, my partner a Mini 4, mother an iPad 2. The 2 might be slow, but for it's age it's still chugging along.

People don't buy iPads because people don't need to upgrade their iPads.
