That was 9to5 Mac. The poll now shows over 70% replace them every 3 years or longer. If you add the every 2 year group, you're well over 90%. Yearly upgraders are damn near statistically insignificant.

Furthermore, that 9to5 Mac poll was likely visited by Apple enthusiasts. The average consumer (non-9to5 Mac reader) will likely even skew the results more. Apple enthusiasts do not necessary represent the avg consumer.

I am running an iPad 2 - Apple hasn't given me a single reason to replace it - the same can be said for everyone else in my extended family.
I have a couple of iPads, a Galaxy Tab, and a Nexus 7 sitting on a shelf gathering dust. They were all family consumption devices. The only tablet that gets any use is my wife's Fire Tablet (ebooks). Funny thing, big phones didn't kill the tablet use in my house. The humble Chromecast did. Tablets used to be the avenue for larger Netflix, Youtube, etc. when compared to the phone. Chromecasts made the viewing even larger.

Keyboard (Old School): 8 fingers, 2 thumbs. You have no problem typing in 50 characters for your name and address.

iOS/Tablet/Phone (New School): 2 thumbs. Auto-Correct, backspace, type, missed the letter, auto-correct again (same as previous time), etc, etc.

2008 MacBook, 4GB RAM, 240GB SSD.....and I CAN watch a DVD on it. How about making 'em like this again.

Don't you know that the OPTIONAL keyboard for the iPad is actually MANDATORY?

This pretty much puts to rest the claim that iPad minis aren't selling as well as ipad pros. In fact the opposite is true. iPad minis & airs are selling MORE than the pros. So it just proves that Apple's slapping on a "pro" label to justify the higher prices kind of backfired. I think it was premature. The ipads are still largely media consumption devices which people don't upgrade too often. Definitely not as often as iphones that's for sure. And that will always be the case. Apple needs to lower prices or add seriously pro features to continue to justify the high prices of pro ipads. Personally I think they need to keep ipad prices under $800 and unify the line up. Add Apple pencil and smart keypad ability across the iPad lines. People are buying more iPad minis & ipad airs than the pros. If Apple wants to make more money they should give the mini & air the ability to use the Apple pencil and smart keyboards. And if they want to sell more iPad pros, they need to lower the prices or add features that truly warrant those higher prices.

What's a DVD?

It's nice to hear that the mini is selling so well. Hopefully this will mean we'll get a spec bump on those soon. I'm very much wanting a 256gb version. Pencil support would be nice but the higher storage tier would be awesome.

Can we please get an iPad that runs the latest version of OS X, similar to a Surface tablet?

Thanks, Tim.

That's a horrible idea. Microsoft has been working for about half a decade to get an OS that fits with touch and apps that do. And they still haven't fixed the apps issue completely. Everyone talks about touch macOS, but completely ignore just how awful it'd be to just take macOS and throw it on an iPad.

You watch DVDs on your Mac? Why! Rip it and put it in your HDD. You can have thousands. I have ripped all my Blurays and put them in my 5TB HDD. I use plex to stream them around the house including the AppleTV 4 in the living room, iPad, and iPhones, etc.

Apple does not officially break out iPad sales on a model-by-model basis.

I wonder that is. It's not because they can't :/

I'm really looking forward to the 2017 iPad Pro - hopefully it's got enough "exciting things" that it will make me pull the trigger!

iPads can replace laptops over time, but fundamentally several things need to added: Full versions of desktop apps, more RAM, trackpad or mouse compatibility, and a traditional file system that allows for organizing files & folders on the local device.

The lack of trackpad compatibility is particularly frustrating for me, because it prevents using the device like a real laptop even for a day or two when I'm traveling. I don't really care about a file system upgrade right now because of course, like most people, I still own a laptop/desktop.

Apple should make a true Mac Tablet with Intel x86 inside for full compatibility with the rest of the world (Windows), USB ports, video out for presentations and visible file system. In short, a true Mac as said.

If they do all that, they're just making a laptop.

If you want it, get a laptop. Some of us don't want our tablets ruined.

Useless? Really?

You think I'm joking? I'm dead serious.

I'd venture to say that nearly everyone who has a tablet, has a smartphone that does everything a tablet can do (and more considering it's got a cellular signal). Neither tablet nor phone can accomplish even half the number of tasks a computer can.

And just like that, tablets are rendered useless.

Apple sells 5.2 million watches = "Dominated Holiday Season"
Apple sells 13.1 million iPads = "Lackluster Sales"

Apples and Oranges really...

The Watch has over 60% market share of a very small market and grew Q over Q (5.2m vs 5.1m)

The iPad has a respectable 24% share of the tablet market, but decreased nearly 20% Q over Q (13.1m vs 16.1m)
