So much for The Verge's "failed product" narrative.
Neither you nor the Verge are in a position to distinguish a strong product from pent up demand. There were lots of people who needed laptops and were holding off on a purchase because the 2015 models were so long in the tooth. Time will tell whether the strong sales are maintained. But The Verge isn't the only place where people are expressing disappointment in the product.

Hopefully this is paranoia speaking, but I wonder if Apple is secretly disappointed that it’s laptop sales are still strong while iPad sales are receding. Apple clearly prefers to make consumer products—products for recreation and consuming services rather than for productivity or enterprise. The iPad was their futurist vision of a consumer PC. Mind you, I love mine for casual uses. Alas, some customers still want productivity tools. Enough, apparently, that Apple can’t dismiss us after all.
With the sales of iOS Devices what they have been, it is completely understandable that Apple has gotten a bit "distracted", somewhat to the detriment of Mac Development (but not nearly to the point that the Haters claim).

But it honestly feels that Apple is working hard to get the Macs back on track, hardware-wise.

Stay tuned...

Apple is knocking it out of the ball park with the new 2016 MacBook Pro! Critics were neutral or negative on it still selling better then previous model. iPhone record sale even with no headphone jack in it! Apple can do no wrong!

There's no strong demand from me to upgrade from my 2011 17" MacBook Pro, I thought there might have been with the launch of the 2016 MacBook Pro, but it got thinner and stuff taken off. So no, my 2011 with a 1Gb SSD is still do everything I need to do professionally in UX design.

Very nice kick in the **** lol.

Apple dropped the ball in productivity and focused in leisure. Just to read their comments on how much they realized they failed with the "new" mac pro... and it took them 3 years to realize it.
I heard a rumor that Apple is already starting design development on the next Mac Pro. It will be release in 2020 and will be close to the same shape and size as the current Mac Pro, will be more proprietary however!

Many didn't consider the 2015 an update, hence the pent-up demand for what Apple finally delivered in 2016. And Apple doesn't have any problem with all the logistics you cite for products they're more interested in keeping competitive like the iPhone.
If the 2015 was such a non-upgrade (you brought it up), then why are all the "I'm too smart to buy the 2016, so I'll buy the 2015 instead" doing that?

And, every company that designs and builds, well, anything, has more or less all of those "Logistics" problems. And quite frankly, some of those problems are quite a bit thornier when you get to within a couple of orders of magnitude of the size of Apple.

Maybe I'm not making a connection here, but wouldn't that late-2016 TB still pretty much have 3+ year old technology in 2016 prices?

Seems like the rip off is just shifted a bit. Yeah, not $400 for the TouchBar but you're still paying for way behind tech w/ the addition of losing neat Pro features (MagSafe & stuff).
What "way behind tech" would that be? I need a list; so I can refute it point-by-point.

So since Apple won't tell us how many people bought 2015 modes "strong" demand could mean literally anything.

And Apple will see revenue increase when they keep very high prices on older-generation tech like the 2015 models. A 4% "revenue" increase while not bad is hardly impressive given the long wait for new MacBooks, though when you look at the state of the rest of the lineup it's perhaps surprising it's not a decrease.

Apple is a PR/marketing/spin machine. It's up to sites like MR to unpack their claims and explain what they do and and don't mean (usually more the latter).

If it wasn't for regulatory requirements, they probably wouldn't even report revenue in figures but just use meaningless (in this context) terms like "strong", "impressive" etc.

I picked one up. Two things: the Touchbar hasn't been as useful as I was hoping. It's fine. It's even an improvement over the standard function keys, but I'm not convinced its utility is able to justify the cost/tech/effort of having a touch strip above my keyboard. I hope they continue to develop it and improve on its utility because, as I said, it is actually better than what came before.... just not a HUGE enough improvement to justify all the engineering yet. Software will, I hope, catch up.

This is also the best laptop I've ever used. I'm with Apple with this journey to the future where all my peripherals are wireless, my screen is amazing, the keyboard became my favourite ever after 2 days of use, the trackpad is brilliant, and yes.... even the function row is slightly better. It's a fast, powerful machine that feels like the future... it's thin, sleek, gorgeous. It's a little too pricey, but I've since earned many times its cost by using it. It's a really solid release.

Have you had issues with palm rejection or are you only on the 13" model? I'm disappointed they got rid of optical audio.

That graphic of no Macs being rated as buy is tragic.

Thats how I feel about it after 6 months with my MBP

You seem to have forgotten about the 2016 MacBook, meaning the MBP wasn't 'the only Mac updated in 2016'.

Also it was very clear from day 1 that the MacBook would eventually replace the MBA, but many people thought otherwise or couldn't accept the reality as they loved their Air.

With the current MacBook trends, I don't think I will re-up with Apple with my next machine between 2018 and 2020. The new Surface looks nice though.

32GB of RAM is not a "major redesign", and it's just a rumor.

I want the drug that u r on bro. That's the one way to love the MBP.
Quoted from the news that you just read
"
He said the model would be "the most significantly redesigned product this year," and he believes it will adopt desktop
"

There is a cost to transitioning to USB C no doubt, but that should not be used as an excuse to dig in your heels and stubbornly refusing to change.

How many adaptors you want to use, is ultimately up to you.

Nice, now do you have a second set of headphones for the airplane? I do. I also have male to male 3.5MM, also a USB adapter for the USB micro cord, not to mention the battery case for the wireless headphones.

I guess this is progress. Just doesn't feel like it!

Do you know what would have been progress, adopting Qi 5 years ago!

That's my future setup right there.

"He also said new 12-inch MacBook models would enter production in the spring"

What does that even mean? Isn't USA already in the middle of Spring? Or is he talking China time?

The 2016 model has a better display, better keyboard, a touch bar (for good or bad), larger and arguably better trackpad, better processor and thinner body as well as dedicated graphics in all 15" MacBook Pro models. I'd argue that it's way better than the 2015 model. The only way the 2015 beats the 2016 model is the price and legacy ports.

Better keyboard...that piece of crap in the 2016 should be banned as cruel and unusual torture. That alone is a 100% deal-breaker.

Better display huh? Bright != better, for example with alienware, the 400 nits 120Hz display is an inferior TN, while the better IPS display is 300 nits, 60Hz. I use a calibrated/profiled display and part of that is turning the brightness way down.

Better processor....the machine is nearly 2 years newer and the 2015 had an old CPU for its time, it damn well better be better and 100% of the credit goes to Intel. And the non-emojibar model has a vastly inferior processor despite the price hike. So yeah, the 2016 base MBP is an inferior CPU to the base 2015 MBP. Despite the higher price tag. That's inexcusable.

Thinner body. The 2015 is plenty thin. The 2016 is a cheap toy that level of thinness is not a perk, and if you think it is, the MB is even thinner, go buy that.

The 15" is an even bigger joke price/performance-wise, so mentioning the anemic GPU isn't doing it any favours.

Nothing screams high end mac like getting rid of the glowing apple logo and chime right? They're tiny things, but literally every single thing about this design says cost cutting. And they delivered something that looks and feels like a cheap piece of junk. How much does it cost to insert a translucent piece of plastic in the lid? 5 cents? Too much for Timmy obviously. But let's kill the brand a little bit more.

And getting rid of magsafe was another huge mistake.

Who would've guessed it, release new products that aren't 4 years out of date and sales go up...incredible!

Seriously though, this just highlights how much money Apple is missing out on right now. If their whole Mac lineup was up to date rather than just one product, they could be making a loooot more...
The thing is, a normal consumer doesnt give 2 f**ks about the newest tech. Theyre about looks and ability to perform their daily tasks like email and safari.

I love comments like this. Apparently, the only reason I like this machine is because I'm brainwashed and self-deluded.

And I love commenters that reply without reading. I never said you can only like the machine if you're brainwashed or self-deluded. I said if you compare the Razer Blade to the 2016MBP and think Apple has a good machine that's not ripping you off, you're brainwashed and self-deluded.

You can still like the machine, there's plenty of reasons to still buy it which I mentioned in my post. But if you can't admit to yourself you're getting very little computer for a heck of a lot of money compared to what else is on the market, then you're brainwashed and self-deluded. The 2016MBP is not a marvel of engineering, it's a marvel of marketing and social engineering.

Why is a "normal consumer" who doesn't care about the newest tech going to drop 3 grand on a 15" MBP when the tiny little MB next to it is $1200 and makes the MBP look bloated? The MB is a much better choice for people who care about looks and the ability to use email and safari.

The 2016 MBP is a product without a target market. Even you seem to be confused about who's buying it.

If it's a $3000 MB*pro* it's for people who care about tech. For people who don't care, the MB looks a heck of a lot better.

Well, needing a pile of dongles (or much more expensive non-mainstream accessories) is pretty old tech. Pretty much back to the bad old days of John Scully.

A laptop with a non-magsafe power connector is "way behind tech".
