I haven't found anything wrong with it at all, much less "terrible."

What have your experiences been?

Given recent revelations, it seems Apple needed turn by turn navigation, Google didn't want to give it without pushing their invasive latitude tech into the Maps app. Apple had to accelerate its own map plans.

I'm amazed at how well it works as a 1.0 app and service compared to Google's which has dominated for SO long with its own maps technology.

Apple's biggest mistake was how much it oversold Maps as the greatest thing ever when it simply matches what's already here. (They were right to brag in China however where it is lauded.) Now, every little error is proclaimed as evidence of how "terrible" the data is, when in actuality Google Maps is full of similar errors and no one has made any definitive comparison -- and what a difficult task that would be!

The way it deals with some types of searches can be improved.

The other unfortunate problem is that missing transit information. Haven't needed it myself, so I don't know how well the third party thing is working out yet. Heard it was getting populated pretty quickly, though.

It's a public and embarrassing problem, but it seems more PR and steady improvements will fix it than anything drastic. Should be good for everyone as there will be a big Map tech duel in the next couple years.

They should have labeled it as a beta. Unfortunately, they've already done that to Siri. It will probably take Apple a long time to match Google Maps in "little things", like being able to see the outline of individual apartment complexes in some locations.

I think the real problem is Scott Forstall. I think Scott has all the bravado of Steve Jobs but none of the brilliance. He is more concerned about saying the stuff his team is doing is "amazing" and less concerned about making it "amazing". Forstall comes off as a pure salesman and I think he has become a liability to Apple.

This +111111

He won the iPhone OS contest with his slimmed down OSX. After that, very minimal innovation if any. Just keeping up (barely) with new things like multi-tasking, notifications, some boring new API.

Despite all that, stock is up (well, generally)

Outside of Maps, what is buggy about iOS 6?

Well Ios is old..not a real change just a taller iphone for a new line of icons, great but already seen.
amd that skeumorphism everywhere,i don't need leather on my calendar or the green texture of my pool on game center..,i prefer something more clean such as the Ableton Live UI.
Stocks are reflecting past situations,i thinks the next year will reflect a great loss in Mac side..guess why?

Actually, I don't like what happened to the Music app. Buttons are now harder to see and are now slightly smaller. The dialer also received an unwelcome change: the fonts are now smaller.

Lock your phone. Now double click the home button to bring up the music apps play, back, and forward buttons. The back and forward buttons no longer match what you see when opening the music app and playing a song. Quality control is slipping.

Maybe their families are more important than your inability to remember how to find your way around before Google Maps babysat you.

Why are people apoligizing for Apple employees. The iPhone is a luxury. We don't HAVE to use maps, but it's more convenient having it. When a company is charging the amount of money that they charge for the iPhone, they better have the stuff right. If it's not right, fix it.

Thank you Tim but as usual, retail staff will not spend thanksgiving with family...

we will have to work...

so guys in their offices have their 3 days off, and people working their a_s_s off all year long will continue to enjoy working their a_s_s off for the company and will take these 3 days in Feb or March like past years

great

Call me when you've worked hard enough to earn that kind of consideration. Retail isn't exactly highly-skilled labor.

I agree, iOS 6 is not very exciting, does not feel like a major update at all except for Maps (which is a downgrade, even if the maps are working our for some, they cannot be as good as Google's)

But that does not make it "buggy" just not a real update.

I mentioned stocks because that is why I think Tim Cook is saying Apple had a great year, the company is doing great despite all the mistakes that have been made. You are right, lets see what he says next year!

Were you unaware of the fact that you would have to work during days when the stores are open when you applied for the job? You signed up for the job, knowing this in advance, and you have no right to complain about it. If you don't like it, feel free to look for another job. If you work retail, that's pretty much gonna be the case anywhere, though.

Yes, this isn't an Apple Store thing. All the other stores in the mall next to the Apple Stores will be open those days as well.

Like posting on a Mac forum? Interesting perspective you have there...

Voicing ones opinion once or twice isn't committing for a lifetime of trolling or hero worship.

To make it clear, it's for those who prepare special events for the MacEXPO's, defend Apple like it's some religion, those who are fanboys and can't see them for what they truly are, or those who spend hours and hours, sucking down every bit of info on Apple's movement, like "glitch in the AppStore, must mean it's a new product release", or trying to be a fortuneteller by claiming they know what Apple thinks and what they will release...

In other words... spends more time online, or on their iOS device than with their girlfriends if they have any...

But hey, we all have different perspectives right? I used to be an Apple follower, I loved the expos, when Steve visiting I was ecstatic, like a freaking celebrity only better. But truth is, it's all fake, their business is nothing like any other because they found out, people out there want the dream and so that's what they sell them. 50% great product with some flaws, the other 50% is image.

I'm sure this isn't new to anyone here, but it's hard to explain how cheated and betrayed you can feel once you learn the truth having been working for them. I wish I could erase my experiences with them, and just be a customer, user if you will.

I liked imagining it was the best company out there, somehow it gave me comfort as a kid knowing that.

Never mind... sorry for the waste... I guess this is just another rant...

For all the Blue's... you do a great job... don't grow old working for Apple...

Since 1996? Really? Let’s see in 1996 we got the “revolutionary” Performa 5400 line, the PowerMac 4400/7200 and the 1400cs. Not to mention the blockbuster release of System 7.5.3 followed for 7.5.3 Rev 2 and 7.5.3 Rev 2.1 and 7.5.3 Rev 2.2 – seriously Mac OS was in such a horrible state back then we had to have dot releases for our dot releases.

Maybe you meant 2006 when we got the same G5 iMac, but with an Intel processor shoved in it. Ditto the MacBook, MacBook Pros, Mac Pro & Mac mini, nothing more than a switch to Intel. The switch to Intel was brilliantly executed and for egg heads pretty damned impressive, but the line-up didn’t change appreciably one iota for 12 months. The iPod got video, the nano got colors. Leopard was released which was a pretty good release. There was also a sneak peak at AppleTV.

I fully agree with this post, nothing good happened after the Quadra 840av was introduced, until the return of Steve Jobs ;) .

All Joking aside, It is astonishing how many of the new Apple fans forget how troubled various portions of Apple's history have had serious issues. One point that comes to mind for me was the introduction of OS X, back in the early years.

It was the new thing, had lots of eye candy, and was for a lack of better words "revolutionary" . That said, for many, versions of OS X before Jaguar (for some) or Panther (for many more) were extremely flawed in their implementation, unstable, had no drivers, and lacked software. In addition to this, the transition from Os9 was fraught with problems, and the company abandoned many developers, hardware manufacturers, and in some case users.

Not many here know of the issues with Early G5 systems, or the MDD G4 "Wind Tunnels" before that. What about video issues on old iMac CRT systems, or consistent logic board failures of iBook G3 systems?

2012 may not have been a perfect year, but even businesses we all love will make mistakes at times. Apple has made mistakes, however, they have a history of working to improve products after them.

Why all the naysaying?

It would be really nice if the naysayers in this forum could look beyond their four walls.

It is understandable that some longtime Mac users are upset that the desktops haven't been updated in awhile. However, if people really looked at where the money is in computing these days it is in mobile. Laptops, tablets, and smart phones. Instead of being so negative, Apple users (and investors) should be estatic that their favorite brand is a market leader in two of those catagories and is slowly gaining share (and VERY profitable) in the third.

Apple is also way ahead of any other company in cloud services. There is nothing like iCloud out there. MS has Office365 and Google has Docs, but Apple has everything. The Mac, iPad, and iPhone all talk to each seamlessly. Unlike MS, iCloud adds photos, music, and video. Unlike Google, you can access you files without an internet connection.

In short, your company is going very well in the market, is leading in the catagories that are meaningful in today's world, and continues to make advances that allow its products to work together like no other.

Please, stop focusing on just one small part (how you want it to be) of the very big picture (how it really is).

If you don't like working during holiday periods, I suggest you get out of retail.

I suppose an education gets you that luxury. When you choose to work in a retail environment you choose to work those hours, it is the same anywhere in any retail store. I guarantee you.

If you don't like it quit your job, and go work for corporate, I hear the pay is better anyway.

I was just about to write this same things. This is probably the least innovative and lack lustre year of apple since 1996. I have been using Apple products professionally for 2 decades. This year I was "forced" to buy a PC. It made me incredibly sad to have to leave the apple universe.
And of course 1996 is the year Steve Jobs returned to Apple.

News flash - Steve Jobs is gone, and he is not coming back. Those who tie the entire worth of Apple to Steve might as well leave now. And BTW Steve must not have been much of a leader if Apple has apparently fallen on it's face within 12 months of his resignation.

Note - I don't believe the above at all - Apple is still capable of great things.

How is the Maps thing overblown? They got rid of a CLEAR superior product for a terrible replacement.

Because it has worked well for me the many times I have used it. Many people have TomTom in their cars and it has worked well for them as well. That is why it is overblown.

Nice gesture and all but...

(total # Apple employees) - (Apple retail staff) - (Apple Support) = 1000 people. Maybe. And I still don't think all of them would truly have a 5-day week off. And the week that ends with Black Friday and the next business day is Cyber Monday. No way. Nooooooooo way.

Again, nice gesture...but folks who think this is 20,000+ people are incorrect.
