And in other news, Foxconn and sharp employees will be working overtime through the holiday season.

Does that include the people who put together the maps application for iOS?

Yeah but they get to take their extra days in a special place doing special things. Testing the map app fixes!

Kidding aside, I'm still not really clear on why they released the maps application prematurely. The pressure to ship should never be allowed to outweigh the potential for shipping something with a significant missed goal. No one should feel intimidated by an obligation to pull the emergency brake on a launch if it just can't go. And yet it still happens. Fear can be a really destructive motivator.

Joseph Heller had it right in his novel "Something Happened." Everyone really is afraid of someone else in corporate structures. Or was it "afraid of at least four other people"... it's been a long time since that book popped into my head.

Tim Cook is probably savvy enough to realize that everyone, including the maps app team, needs that extra time off. Still, someone at Apple needs to learn to be more afraid of launching a bad product than of failing to meet a deliverable's deadline. I mean if you burn the turkey then you're probably just going to have to serve something else for T'day dinner, or put a few extra potatoes on the table!

so guys in their offices have their 3 days off, and people working their a_s_s off all year long will continue to enjoy working their a_s_s off for the company and will take these 3 days in Feb or March like past years
great

...sounds like you want an office job and not a retail job. why arent you working in one?

Nice gesture and all but...

(total # Apple employees) - (Apple retail staff) - (Apple Support) = 1000 people. Maybe. And I still don't think all of them would truly have a 5-day week off. And the week that ends with Black Friday and the next business day is Cyber Monday. No way. Nooooooooo way.

Again, nice gesture...but folks who think this is 20,000+ people are incorrect.

Those minuses you listed get to take their extra 3 days at another time.

If my company announced that they were going to give me three extra vacation days, I'd be thrilled.

In before "...but.. but.. they sold 5 million phones!" as if sales numbers are an indication of 100% customer satisfaction.

No, of course not. Their consistently best-in-the-business customer satisfaction levels across all their product categories is an indication of high customer satisfaction.

As a shareholder I must say that I am not happy with this. Apple has **** hitting the fan every other day and they want to have extra time off... sheesh.

Tim, you have to know how to be tough to be nice another day.

"Work is not supposed to be easy, it's supposed to be gratifying." - Ken Segall's book

As a shareholder, you should be glad Apple's engineers are taking some time off to see their families and rest a bit. Happy workers are more productive workers. The last thing you should want is a bunch of grumpy, burnt-out employees that are wishing they were home all day long instead of getting work done. Let's face it, this is not a productive time of year anyway.

They had a grumpy leader for years who didn't give two hoots about their personal lives. Why change now?

Because they have a different leader?

Since Tim Cook took over, Apple has added charitable gift matching and stock dividends. It seems like the new CEO does things a bit differently. Note that these type of changes would probably need to be approved by the Board of Directors.

Did you even read what you wrote because it sounds like you are pissed because you (in retail) have to work some of the busiest days of retail sales for the year and then - get this - you get to take those 3 days off in less hectic retail months.

So basically you are saying "Waaaaah, I have to take my 3 days later than someone else."

Wow. You seriously should look for a new line of work.

Agreed. I work retail. They don't give us an extra paid 3 days off just cause the store is doing well period. I'd totally take 3 days paid off that I might have to take some other time. It's retail, the holidays are their busiest time and when they need employees the most. It sux but that's the nature of the beast. Hell, I used to work at CNN.com... we just didn't get holidays off period (the best i could do was get them to let me be on call Christmas Day and I worked Thanksgiving). Didn't even get paid overtime for them or anything.

I'm just happy usually my manager lets me take after Christmas off so I can go visit my parents.

Call me when you've worked hard enough to earn that kind of consideration. Retail isn't exactly highly-skilled labor.

Please don't confuse low skilled with not hard work. Retail can be quite hard work and just cause some one works retail doesn't mean they don't do hard work.

Shoot, I know at my store I had an idiot who decided he was going to do it cause he wanted something "relaxing" (he worked doing dialysis as his other job).

Yeah, he didn't last two weeks.

Thank you Tim but as usual, retail staff will not spend thanksgiving with family...

we will have to work...

great

Let me add, you could work at Walmart where they want you to come in on 10 pm Thanksgiving Day so that you can be there for their super early Black Friday sale...

I personally refuse to shop during those really early sales. There is a point where it does get ridiculous what stores will do and I don't want to encourage it.

This is awesome!

Vacation Time is better salary increase... At least, for me.

And the government can't take a cut of that...

Apple's going soft in the post-Steve era. My brother has three kids and as he complains they can't eat vacation time he can't take.

The Maps team didn't get it done. This sort of thing should be a performance-based perk and not a "feel good" blanket policy.

"In a little over six months we've launched outstanding new products in each of our major categories."

I guess the desktops are minor categories?

Only Thanksgiving?

3 days is nothing for an "extended" period.... Especially the work Apple has done, Tim is whole-harted.

"Thanks Tim, but no thanks..... Give me 6 days, and i'll take it."

Its like putting extra effort in and not getting anytime off.

For a company as big as Apple, and all the hard work thy do, i'm really surprised that Tim didn't make this worth-while.

Oh well....something, is better than nothing at all.

"...in this post-PC era." R.I.P iMac/Mini/Pro

Astute observation! Let's hope there's no hidden message in that statement. As many others, I still love my iMac, and am looking forward to the next version, whenever it may be ready. I know it'll be great!

No new iMacs, no new Mac Pros, a terrible iPhone 5 launch, closure of Ping, launch of a very mediocre 'new' OSX, Lightning adaptors not available on iPhone launch, disastrous launch of Maps... yes, I can see it's been an outstanding year.

Lighten up; somewhere there has to be a silver lining in that cloud. No pun intended.

I think that's a joke but I just don't get it! Are you saying the MacBook Air is a slow computer?

PCs are supposed to be much faster for heavy tasks. if u need a pc to replace a laptop, then the laptop was *very* powerful and/or the pc (or operating system) is slow...
but anyway, i was just kidding :)

They already get Thanksgiving and Black Friday off, always have. This way, they get the whole week (unless they're retail/support, in which case they get Thanksgiving Day off, and just get some bonus days off). It's quite worthwhile. They end up with 9 days off in a row if they work M-F.
