Part leaks come from factories in China. Apple employees wouldn't have access to those parts. Apple can't hold Chinese factories accountable for part leaks like they would in the U.S. because China doesn't have the same laws we have.

The Mac Pro is assembled in the U.S. and nothing from that was leaked.

This kinda thing is standard practice for any large company. It's just a matter of how they implement it. It's pretty cool that Mr. Cook delivers the message himself.

I work at a large corporation and we have to watch a video like this and answer some related questions once a year. Its likely this is par for the course at Apple as well.

Exactly.

As many posters noted, this is quite commonplace in large corporations.

You can read Apple's latest Business Conduct Policy here (PDF).

If anything, the real story is that an employee leaked the video. Which is usually against a company's confidentiality policy. In other words, the video didn't work.

(Insert obligatory comment that this wouldn't have happened with Steve Jobs around. Somebody's head would've rolled. But perhaps one still will.)

Well, that's kinda true. If there is one thing ole Jobs was undeniably better at than Cook, it would be screaming at people.

I always got the impression that Jobs ran Apple as a cross between a hippie commune and a 60's British boarding school. Everyone there probably wanted to keep him in the "everything is magical" mood more often than "HOW CAN YOU HAVE ANY PUDDING IF YOU DON'T EAT YOUR MEAT".

Business Conduct Policy
No access to the AppleWeb, too many concatenated characters anyways.

Down already- Video says "private"

When I went to watch the video it said it was private. What gives?

Video is private. Can't watch it

Yeah that stinks :( Hopefully they either remove it from the article or re-upload it to YouTube if someone has a copy of it.

Anyone have a mirror? The video is private.

Sorry guys, looks like the video was taken down. I've updated the article -- I haven't seen a mirror of the original unfortunately.

I'm so proud of Tim Cook for continuing Apple's legacy for ethics, standards, and opportunity for all employees. It's one of the big reasons why all of us who buy Apple products do so with pride and carry the logo as a badge of honor.

Tim Cook wants to "Do the Right Thing"? How about starting with a Haswell Mac Mini!

The people that are leaking stuff are the people who don't "do the right thing" as a matter of course in their life, and this won't change their behavior. But it's good to see Tim calling this out. I get the feeling he's a "walk softly but carry a big stick" kinda guy.

Agreed. I like reading "rumours" like anybody but posting internal emails goes beyond the pale. The leaker should do they right thing and resign. I try hard to never speak of specifics about my work with anyone outside of work.

really bringing up Martin Luther King into this?!

Disgraceful

or just funny/ironic.

mlk's message is to stand up against the type of behavior being exhibited here (blindly obey the boss).. he talked about doing the right thing for humanity.. not doing the right thing for a corporation..
they're polar opposites.

It's definitely a secrecy issue. The Mac Pro has been the first complete product surprise since the iPhone v1.

Maybe because the Mac Pro doesn't require special parts to be made ahead of time in China. But I don't know about the first iPhone, nor did I follow rumors back then.

----------

iPad too. The iPad didn't leak. iPhone didn't leak. Mac Pro didn't leak.

The iPad did leak, but they thought it would be called "iSlate". That was about the time I first started looking at MacRumors, and I remember hearing about the iSlate all the time.

----------

this is absolutely going to hit back at apple

Disgraceful

"Do the right thing" is a generic phrase. It's a coincidence.
