I don't mind Cook trying to take the stage away here, but what has he ever done that changed the world ...

- iCar ? Nope... not going to change anything even in 5 years no one all all rush out and buy this one but Apple people.

- Apple Watch : just an accessory... you still need an iPhone to make any real off. With just a smart watch, sure, u can track fitness and go go googly-eyes over the number of senors Apple sticks in, but that's all you'll be doing.. Unless u have a phone to sync to unless u can sync info to your Mac, then that's not gotta be any game changer.

While new models are being made, if it was not for Jobs, Apple wouldn't be a big company like it is today with iOS devices...

That's an icon... Tim is just following in his footsteps... hardly anything to step up about. Its good that he's stepping up to "something" at least anyway, but in my mind, that's all he'll be doing.

I'm sure there are other ways to broaden your perspective on the world. Like perhaps going out into the world.

Interesting that you think going to college isn't "going out into the world." I actually worked multiple jobs to pay for my college/graduate/post-graduate education. That period of my life was filled with diversity and new experiences.

I'm sure there are other ways to broaden your perspective on the world. Like perhaps going out into the world.

Oh lolz. What exactly do you mean by 'the world'?? an overseas holiday? Backpacking through another country? Hanging out with people from different countries/backgrounds at college?

... Previous commencement speakers at George Washington University have included actress Kerry Washington, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, First Lady Michelle Obama, former President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush, and Hillary Clinton.

That'll be "... former First Lady Hillary Clinton.", surely?

I could mention 100 people I would rather have coming to my university and make my commencement speech. In my opinion he's not a "big personality" but "just" a business man in a powerfull position.

Statistics say that every year of college increases income. Yes, even for liberal arts degrees.

Of course there are entrepreneurs who "make it" on their own and that's great, but it's not the average. And anyway, there are other reasons to go to college besides making money or landing a job. It used to be about expanding your mind learning about the world, and it has always had a social aspect as well.

I started my own business and at 24, I feel midly successful. I did go to a university for one year, but felt like I was throwing my money away and decided to drop out.

Personally, I feel college can be a giant waste of money and a bad way to start one's life in debt. However, I do know there are many who don't start their own businesses and college is a way for those people to create a career. For that reason, I know it can be an important tool.

For someone like me, I'd rather make money than spend it.

I've no problem about Tim doing any speech.

I just find it embarrassing when he seems to turn everything into an Advert for Apple in some way at every opportunity.

If he can stay off making it into an Apple advert them I'm all for it.

I'm sure he can avoid that if he REALLY tries.

For the people that are questioning the doctorate is public service "what has he done for public service?" You seem to forget that the man in charge of one of the largest companies on the planet came out of the closest and is a big advocate for gay rights. That's a pretty big deal as someone in his status to publicly come out. Actors and singers and artists come out all the time, but rarely a CEO of a major fortune 500 company.

I live in DC, let's get this over to reddit so we can organize something for the Apple fans who spent all their money on computers and had nothing left to pay for GWs tuition.

GW, most over priced school going....

And why does Tim Cook deserve a DOCTORATE in public service?? Seriously? I like apple products too but this is getting out of hand.

Last I checked, HiLARY CLINTON was also a Former First Lady, macrumors. How about adding her title just as you did with Barbara Bush and Michele Obama...

Is this open to the public?

The national mall is a public space. I'm sure they'll have things partitioned off but you should still be able to see it.

Bah! College is for chumps.
Take that six-figure lump sum, or, more likely, lump debt,
and go out and get your start in the world.

I bet in most cases, people who do that will be far better off
four or five years down the road than their school-going brethren will be.

Sounds like a bit of jealousy. Without my parents contributing anything to my college (not even living expense), I had a small amount of debt after college, that was paid off within 3 years due to the well paying job I got due to going to college.

I noticed that too. Although her title might be hard to pin down. Sure she was a First Lady, but that's becoming less and less relevant considering her career.

College/uni broadens your perspective on the world.
You can have your opinion but that's all it is.

It sure does "broaden your perspective on the world"!
Like, for example, you'll learn what a crushing financial obligation feels like first-hand!

And, of course, you'll also find out that real world is just like college:
professional educators ready to assist you at the drop of a hat,
constant partying, an insulated, protective enviornm-- oh,yeah ....

What is this,1975? lol
Everything that'd cost you untold amounts of money to learn at college
can ba had for free while sitting on the toilet at home.
It's this new thing they have that I think's called "the internet" or something like that.

And don't gimme any of that garbage about how college is different because it offers the "personal touch".

And anyway, there are other reasons to go to college besides making money or landing a job.
It used to be about expanding your mind learning about the world,
and it has always had a social aspect as well.

My friend, the the only thing that counts in life is "making money/landing a job".
Not to the exclusion of everything else, of course, but it's certainly the number one thing you should aspire to.

And all that "expanding your mind/social stuff": that important enough to be worth $100,000 to ya?
You can make friends - much more varied friends, at that - everywhere, anytime, et., etc.
College shouldn't be about playtime: as insanely expensive as it is, it should be about hard work.
Your idea of college life is some outdated fantasy from the 50s, 60s & 70s.
There are way too many mind-expanded, friend seeking, degree-holding
and debt-saddled college graduates that are on the unemployment line.

And all that "it's about more than just education" jazz sounds like it was lifted straight from a college brochure! lol

Not everyone graduates college with debt.
If you and your parents are smart, everyone comes out in the black when you graduate.

Must be a crapload of dummies sending their kids to school.
Outstanding student loan debt is in the trillions - yes, that's "trillions" with a capital "T" - of dollars.
