I work in Currys UK (dont laugh) and with access to PC world and Currys stock file I can confirm shortages of 15" and 17" in our main warehouses (base models of both are showing as 0 available with no order due date). Still a few kicking about in superstores and they are allowing us to do forward orders, but stock is low.
13" model still has 300 or so still available in our central warehouse.

good news , thank you :D

Thanks "iamnotanumber" Youre #1 :eek::rolleyes:

Why would anyone laugh?

No one should be laughing at anyone's profession. Although there is a stigma attached to DSGI (Pcworld and Currys...) staff, like in all walks of vocation there are those that are good honest workers and others who are unscrupulous. As long as you earn an honest living never be ashamed of what you do. Advice over. ( Ex Manager - DSGI employee).

Back on topic have just pulled the trigger on a CTO 13" Macbook Air (needed something light) hope if a refresh is coming it's within the next couple of weeks so that I have the choice to exchange.

Believe it not DSGI has extremely good relationships with Apple, Only retailer outside Apple and Apple VARs to sell the ipad during first 60 days of launch, having mini Apple shops within their Megastores e.tc....
I also recall at my ex store when apple announced the icore refresh we had the laptops instore to sell with a 2-3 days. So DSGI stock level potentially is a very good indicator of a refresh.

Although 300 13"MBP seems like a lot of stock it's one of the best selling models and could be easily shifted within a week. However PC World Business is showing 0 stock of the 17" model, seems to be a shortage in this size.

All anecdotal evidence, fingers crossed the refresh is announced within a couple of weeks.

This is great news! I thought I'd have to postpone my first Mac purchase until at least April, but if Macbook Pros arrive, new white Macbooks won't be far behind! And if they lower the price, I might even be first in line for a new Pro!

Australian tech stores running out of Macs?

I live in Tasmania, Australia, which while not exactly a technological hub, has many major electronic stores with sales on macbooks and imacs which is pretty unusual.
I went onto the dick smith website (for all you overseas blokes, dick smith is a major tech retailer here in Aus) and in-store stock searches for various macbook pros + imacs have all returned results similar to the attached screen shots.

Searches of store stock in melbourne, sydney and hobart have all shown basically the same thing-dick smith is almost totally out of macbooks and imacs.

Myer (another big store) is having a 10% off sale on macs too.

Can this mean a refresh is coming sooner rather than later?

(BTW I hope the screen shots I attached weren't too big or failed in some way-this is my first post!):)

Indeed, I just checked this too. Dick Smiths is running really low, as is JB-Hifi.

To the OP, fantastic work on the research! Although I will be more confident of an imminent refresh when either the Apple estimated shipping time starts slipping, or we start hearing stories of people having their MBP shipping dates delayed.

PS. I hope the updates come soon. As others have mentioned, the sooner the updates come, the more likely they are to have quad CPUs. Also, here's hoping to awesome GPUs!

why do you think that the sooner the updates come, the more likely they are to have quad CPUs?????

Dual core Sandy Bridge doesn't come out until February 20th. While Apple could potentially release dual-core MBPs before then, if Apple were to release next Tuesday, the odds say the computers will have quad cores (which are already out).

are there quad core sandy bridge laptop models processors?
What are the odds that apple will use them?

Quick summary:
The i7 quad core CPUs are indeed mobile processors, although they do have a TDP 10W higher than the dual core CPUs that Apple uses now. This is mostly negated however due to the fancy speed stepping and core idling tech that the SB generation employs.

I expect the quads to be offered as at least an option on the 15" and 17" MBPs.

In my opinion, if there are no quad CPUs, this next update is going to be very dull. Unless Apple goes ahead and puts in a fantastic GPU instead, but 'sif that's likely.

so will you not buy a new MBP if they dont upgrade to a 4 core?

Whats everyones thoughts on the keynote next wednesday about the ipad app. Think it might be a disguise for a new MBP keynote??

I haven't decided. I'll be extremely disappointed and angry, either way. But if everything else is good enough, I might be persuaded. My Santa Rosa MBP needs an update.

And what keynote??? Did I miss something?

I hope it is introduced at a keynote soon, as that would mean it's either had some serious internal or external design changes, and/or a philosophy change. I'm hoping for the philosophy change of more power, and less battery/thinness obsession.

Nah, that's not a keynote. Shouldn't have anything to do with MBP release.

I feel there may be an update without a keynote next Tuesday

here in the UK PC World and Currys are not showing any sign of stock shortages on their website, all in stock

I feel if they update with out a keynote then it would only be specs. Not a new sandy bridge processor. If sandy bridge comes out i feel like it has to be a keynote.

Anyones thoughts on new liquid metal unibody?

About the "last gen macs on sale" topic, in Italy a big chain (Mediaworld) is selling the base 15" for 5% off and the top 15" for 10% off the regular price.

From january 27th to february 12th.

I predict that IF Sandy Bridge is available at release then it will be a BTO option on the 17" only. Doing so would be consistent with their treatment of the i7 when it first became available in MBPs. Apple has been nothing if not consistent when it comes to dragging out the adoption of new processors.

Maybe, then we could get the arrendale core processors in the 13" models and sb in the others

LiquidMetal unibody would be amazing, but I expect it won't happen until Ivy Bridge update, if at all. I'm expecting this SB update to be a serious innards redesign, and the IB update to be a serious case redesign.

If it's just a SB update, then a keynote won't happen, as upgrading to a new CPU architecture is obvious, and any new tech would have been covered in the MBA keynote. A MBP release at the keynote is only likely if there are some major new changes somewhere. A CPU upgrade that everybody else is doing does not qualify.

Apple won't not use SB in this next update. They always use the newest CPU tech, unless something serious stops them (Power consumption of G5s, and crap IGP on Arrandale for 13"). I'd be very surprised if the 13" doesn't get SB too. Large CPU gain for small GPU loss.
