can't decide between the 500gb and 1tb? i currently use a 200gb exernal drive that i just maxed out and i only use it on one machine. i was planning to get a new external drive so this is perfect timing. in theory, the 500gb should be more than enough for this machine and one other, but i'm thinking of more movie files down the line = more space. should i just go ahead and get the 1tb for a few hundred more? anyone have any thoughts?

I cant possibly see how you can use up 500GB of space, unless you are a movie designer and 3d designer, and like to download lots of movies and everything else. Im a photographer, and a gamer, and 500GB is more than enough.

Does anyone think the time capsule is expensive for the capacity it offers? The UK price is £199 for the 500GB Model.

£199 is like $400 canadian, and the 500gb AEBS:n is $329 here. So yes, that is a little bit more expensive if you take into account the exchange.
However, since this has 500gb HD, and a AEBS:n wireless router, it is a pretty decent price for the bundle.

Please forgive my dumbness, but using this, would how would it work with my current wireless modem? My only concern is that a 500GB NAS would cost about £80 and can connect to my current wireless modem with an ethernet cable.

I was thinking that, perhaps, those with the AEBS and an external drive are actually better off if Apple does eventually get TM working on AirDisk. How would Time Capsule owners get the initial backup done? Over 802.11n? Slow.... Over Gigabit Ether? Maybe but not faster than a direct connection to the HD. Furthermore, those with an external drive can also use it as a clone drive and boot directly off it. Can't do that with Time Capsule.

yes, i actually have lots of movies and TV. right now i've been burning them to DVD and delete them from my computer to save space. also, as this is wireless and supports multiple computers, that means my 200+gb plus my boyfriends or anyone else in my household (i personally have 2 imacs and a powerbook. that is 500gb right there. i think 500gb should be OK, but i'm starting to lean towards the 1tb for long-term. i mean, i never thought i'd use up the 200gb external drive i have and now and here i am with it so full time machine won't backup anymore. i'd rather not have to buy a new time capsule in a years time because i underestimated my usage... then again, i'm still finding it hard to believe i'd use 500gb anytime soon. decisions decisions. the other thing i am thinking is that i can plug my current 200gb external drive into a 500gb time capsule to extend it.

Maybe slow, but it can do it transparently in the background while you sleep, watch tv, play World of Warcraft, go to work, whatever. Should work fine.

The "Time Capsule" isn't shipping until February, hopefully between then we get 10.5.2 and a firmware update for the AirPort Extreme N's.

Someone at MacWorld should check the OS Build and the firmware on one of the Time Capsule demos.

which is much better than having an external drive right next to you making all kinds of noise everytime it updates. i'd much prefer a slow wireless drive that i can keep in the closet and never hear.

Anybody know the transfer rates of this gizmo?

One thing I hate about my external connected to the extreme is how painfully slow it is.

any word if we have access to the hard drive, or does it need to be just for backups?

Apple's site seems to imply that you have access to the drive:
Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn’t mean Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily.

I've been looking to get an external HDD to accompany my iMac. Probably a 500GB one. My question is, if I purchased the 1TB time capsule would I be able to use 500GB as a wireless external HDD and set time machine to only use 500GB?

This whole thing just burns my butt. I specifically bought a AEBS:n because Apple said an AirDisk would work with Leopard's Time Machine. I specifically bought a 1 TB drive to attach to my AEBS:n for Time machine backups. I've now spent more than what the 1 TB Time capsule device costs, and I still don't have the functionality Apple said I would have.

As much as I like Apple products I will never again buy anything from Apple until I know first-hand for a fact that it does what Apple claims, because their marketing is not to be trusted.

They damn well better fix TM and AEBS.

Have you been living under a rock? The AEBS:n (that came out in October or so) has gigabit ports.

On a side note: I do hope that they repair the AEBS AirDisk time machine functionality. I know it can be hacked to enable it (I posted the damn hack for christ sake).. but still.. if it can work over wifi with time capsule why not with an airdisk?

I used the hack but it would never work for more than a week or so, and I would have to reformat my external hard drive again for the setup to work. So I wound up just plugging it in occasionally.

Anyway, Apple won't release a way to use an external hard drive with existing base stations. The reason they haven't already, and won't in the future is because of their new product. It is all about sales right??? We need someone really smart to make a hack that will work permanently....

Maybe they can snatch the firmware from the new capsule thing and figure out what they did... but it's a long shot, I guess.

I'd have paid for an update for my AEBS to be able to do this!

I purchased 2 iMacs and AEBS in Nov. (no ext HD yet) - when I heard the news about Time Capsule I was hoping the HD would be a separate unit similar to a G-Mini so you could stack it with the ABES. The ABES gets warm enough as it is without the hard drive included in the same box. Hoping for a firmware fix.

I'm going to wait two weeks for the official release and see whether there's a firmware update. Apple was publicising this feature when I bought my base and hard drive, and I know that they'll have a lot of angry customers if they get greedy and require you to buy a new base.

can't decide between the 500gb and 1tb?

I've been buying computers for almost thirty years now and in that time I have never, ever... not once... ever wished I had a smaller hard drive or less RAM. There are countless times when I've wished I'd chosen the larger of the available options, though. :)

If you can swing the 1tb, do it. In 12 months the 500gb will be humorously small and you'll laugh that you ever thought 1tb would be "too much" space.

does anybody have any idea how they fit a full size full speed hard drive plus the router plus aerials plus rear ports and power suppy into the same space as the AEBS? The hard drive must take up 70% of the space.

Full sympathy to those of you with the AEBS plus external.

Do you think it will be possible to use this as just a wireless network hard drive?

I'm looking for a network hard drive that can be linked into my wireless network and also possibly that can be connected to via FTP so I can access it away from home. Does anyone know if Time Capsule will do this (or if there is a product on the market that will)?

Thanks

Yes it is expensive (£47 more than in the US for the 500gig one) but thats rip off UK again.

I was on holiday in the US last November and bought a few Apple bits whilst there and saved a packet. I want the Time Capsule and feel another holiday coming on:D

Amen.

Chapped ass over here as well.

I'd like to clock SJ for this tricksy marketing ploy. I will NOT be purchasing a Time Cap. I already have one: AEBS and ext HDD.

I hope/expect Apple to make good on their original purported AirDisk support.

I too am in the club of recent AEBS:n owners who upgraded in readiness for the wireless TimeMachine backup to an attached USB HDD.

If Apple value their existing customers, they will upgrade the AEBS firmware and/or Leopard to bring the AEBS:n in line with TimeCapsule. Hell, I'd even pay a nominal fee to add the functionality to my AEBS much like what they're doing with the software upgrade on the iPod Touch. Please Apple, do not leave me with a <3 month old product that fails to do all the things I bought it for.

I for one am torn between getting TC or an External. I was at Macworld and saw TC and really like it.
You as well as others seem to not understand one thing, unless we are paying a monthly recurring charge (like the iPhone cell plan) we are not technically "Apple's Customers".
Once you buy something and the transaction is over and the return policy has passed your contract with the company has also terminated.
Apple is in no way obligated to update Leopard to support users with existing external hard drives and airport base stations.
You don't have a hold on Apple since you are not paying a monthly recurring charge so don't count on them updating the software, they will not lose customers over it.
They have share holders to please, it would stupid at this point to come out with TC then a few days or weeks later update Leopard to support external hard drives for airdisks. TC would lose a lot of sales.
