so can anyone tell me....

I was thinking of getting a TC so that I can backup up my itunes library. Can anyone tell me if it will be possible to stream music from the TC to the laptop?

I only have an 80gb HD in my laptop but have stacks of music so could do with being able to free up some space for other things. Ideally getting a TC would let me stream music to my laptop and into the hi fi or straight into the ATV.

Backup...

I know the Time Capsule can be used to back up multiple machines, but can Time Machine also back up files that are on an external drive incase they are lost too?

can't decide between the 500gb and 1tb? i currently use a 200gb exernal drive that i just maxed out and i only use it on one machine. i was planning to get a new external drive so this is perfect timing. in theory, the 500gb should be more than enough for this machine and one other, but i'm thinking of more movie files down the line = more space. should i just go ahead and get the 1tb for a few hundred more? anyone have any thoughts?

Well, considering you maxed out the 200gb HD with only one computer; go with the 1tb if you are adding another computer to your network. I mean, this way, you are guaranteed the space since your prob. going to be saving movies etc.

All this is assuming the fact that you dont mind paying the extra dough for the additionally space. :D

While I'm very disappointed at Apple for not being able to use Time Machine with a HD through the AEBS.:mad:

The more I think about this problem, however, the more I think it might be even better to just attach a HD to the back of my new iMac through one of the FrieWire ports and eventually attach a USB HD to the AEBS for use on my network. It's not the best solution, but one I can live with.

btw those of you who say you have a extreme already....can't you just locate it in a different part of your house for better signal/range....would be especialy useful out in the garage to use with the touch/iphone while streaming music...cutting grass etc

This was my thought. You can also use it to take a second printer wireless if you have one, or connect it to your hi-fi to stream iTunes content to your stereo (great for parties).

I cant possibly see how you can use up 500GB of space, unless you are a movie designer and 3d designer, and like to download lots of movies and everything else. Im a photographer, and a gamer, and 500GB is more than enough.

Don't forget that Time Machine is making multiple back-ups - one every hour. The bigger the hard drive capacity, the further back in time you can travel.

does anybody have any idea how they fit a full size full speed hard drive plus the router plus aerials plus rear ports and power suppy into the same space as the AEBS? The hard drive must take up 70% of the space.

I think the unit is notably larger.

I think the unit is notably larger.

Airport Extreme:

Size and weight

* Length: 6.5 inches (165 mm)
* Width: 6.5 inches (165 mm)
* Height: 1.3 inches (34 mm)
* Weight: 1.66 pounds (753 grams)

Time Capsule:
Size and weight

* Length: 7.7 inches (197 mm)
* Width: 7.7 inches (197 mm)
* Height: 1.4 inches (36.3 mm)
* Weight: 3.5 pounds (1587 grams)

I wouldn't call an extra inch and a 10th in width and length and a 10th of an inch in height 'notably larger'

Towards the end of February according to shipping estimates.

Where did you get that information? I called the local Apple Store here, and they told me February 12th. I find it hard to believe they'd give me such an exact date, if it was just going to be "End of February".

I'm desperate for mine. I bought an AEBS a week before MWSF, and was bragging to friends that I could take my iPhone to the furthest corner of my big backyard and have all 3 (or 2 of 3) bars of WiFi. With my crappy linksys, I can lay my phone on top of the router and watch the WiFi go in and out. Also, my Wii can't seem to connect either, so it's not just apple products (I know, it's my POS router).

Apple Store return policy gave me until 1/18 to return my AEBS with no add'l cost. I begged them to just let me hold onto it until the TC came out and I could trade out, but they said no dice. So I had to take it back and am struggling without reliable WiFi until they get that Time Capsule in the store.

Sure hope it is sooner then that. I am in the same boat as you...

Also,

I just called another Apple Store and they said 2nd week of February.

I'm currently using 320g for my backup and I can go back until nov of last year. Not to bad actually. Nov/Dec are pretty few (little tick marks), Dec has a few more than Nov, and Jan obviously has a ton of the tick marks.

So yah, 500g for one machine would be very safe as I have already gotten warnings on storage space and previous backups will be deleted.

1tb would be absolutely best and even give room for some extra storage. Plus if you do have an external drive, just hook that sucker up to the TC and use it as a network drive.

Dangit. Hopefully that is just a safe, late estimate so you'll be pleasantly surprised when it comes 2 and a half weeks early! :D I know that my last 2 Apple store orders have come earlier than estimated, although not that early.

I was very interested in the LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk which doesn't come out till February, but this time capsule might be better. I wonder how reliable and sturdy the time capsule will be compared to the new lacie?

Pardon me for my ignorance. But wont the TC act as a network drive? why do I have to hook up the external drive to use it as network drive?

I have a couple of questions regarding the Time Capsule.

1. Do you think you'll be able to set a certain amount of space on the TC for backing-up, and then the rest of the space can simply be used as an external hard drive?

2. Will it work like any other router? Will I be able to connect other PCs, or my Xbox 360 to it?

Thanks.

I hope Feb 29th is just a very conservative estimate and they ship like next week.

I bought the 1TB on amazon and they estimated a Feb 1st shipment date, now it just says "we'll deliver when available".

Hello all,

I already have a fairly complex network setup with Linksys gear and I would like to continue using it as my (wifi) router/modem.

My understanding is that a Time Capsule is not a modem but just an access point, and I would like to use the hard drive for Time Machine and the USB port for an all-in-one printer.

So, what I'd like to know is:

- Is it possible to disable the Time Capsule as an access point and just use it as a hard drive for TM and with a printer, connected to my current setup?

- Can you use it with any printer?

- Will I be able to use the scanner via wifi too, even on PCs?

- How can I be sure that my neighbour or someone nearby won't be able to access the Time Capsule's HD?

- Is it not cheaper to buy an external drive and USB -> Ethernet adapter? Will that work with TM?

Thanks,

1) I think you will be able to format the drive just like any other attached hard drive.

2) Time capsule is an airport extreme with an internal hard drive so it'll handle your networking needs.
