Read this on the earlier forum post, tried it with my Airport Express and it worked! This is the reason I bought the Airport Express. I am stoked it works.

I think you mean Airport Extreme, not Airport Express.

If I am reformatting my external HD, what format should I make the partitions?

I tried Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but could not get either partition to appear in Time Machine.

The issue isn't partitions. When you are in the Partitions section hit the "Options" button and make sure your drive is set up to use the GUID method of addressing rather than Master Boot Record. That should solve your problem of the drive not appearing/being recognized.

well i cant get mine to work so, i don't know if its just me or if its just a rumor or maybe you have to have an Intelmac. IDK but its not working for me.

Is there a particular format it needs to be?

Heres an idea, why don't you make everything into one freaking machine, stop doing all these dumb add ons Apple. Oh yeah we can use a HD now BFD!
Jesus christ on a stick.

yeah, time capsule & you can have your backups into one machine, just partition the hard drive.. what's your problem with add-ons? this is jus tan option for people who have AEBS and want wireless backup but can't get Time Capsule. I don' quite understand your anger?

good

I guess this is a good fix for those with MacBooks. I've got an iMac and since it rarely moves around, this won't be helping me any. I just leave my external drive sitting there on the desk. :) But, I'm due for a MacBook Air soon, so maybe I'll have to check it out.

And yes, I'd be curious if I can use my new Airport Express (n) to hook up a hard drive. Worth a try, but I doubt it. I seriously doubt Apple would want the 99 buck AExpress to function like the Extreme in that regard.

I wish this was entirely true. I can get it to work on a Machine where that USB drive was previously mounted. But not other machines on the network.

Graphite?

Dont laugh at me but i still have a Graphite base station, does USB disk work with it?

There seems to be some confusion on how to enable so here are the steps hope they help someone out there out:

1.If you have a disk already plugged into your AEBS it may or may not work. I suggest you start by going to your System Preferences, Time Machine and see if your Airport Disk shows up. If it does then sweet you are all set!

2. Assuming it does not show up first open finder and attempt to browse your Airport disk, once you have opened a folder on it go back to the System Preferences, Time Machine and see if it shows up. If not proceed to step 3.

3. If you are like me it still wasn’t showing up. The steps were to first backup the files on your “AirDisk” to some other safe location. Then plug the USB drive into your Mac, open disk utility and format it “Mac OS Journaled” hook it back up to your AEBS. Open finder and browse the AirDisk, then proceed to System Preferences, Time Machine and you should be good to go!

When I check the Disk tab of the airport utility the external disk is clearly shown as connected and functioning, however my external drive does not appear on my desktop and it isn't seen by Time Machine. Still, it does appears in the finder and the finder says it is connected. When I click on the disk in the finder in order to access its contents,I hear it spin up, there is a slight pause, then I get the same old error message every time: "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for [name of disk] cannot be found."

No one has ever been able to tell me what that means, but I'm getting used to it regardless.

I had this problem when I changed the drive icon. Hook the drive up to your mac via USB, hit cmd-I and wipe out the drive icon (if you changed it). Then unmount the disk and hook it back up to your extreme. ( I might have rebooted the router too)

That worked for me.

This works fine for the single machine you formatted the drive on. For other Mac's on the network it still doesn't solve it.

I wonder how many people sold their Airport Extreme for a Time Capsule, only for this to come out. I know at leas one person who did.

What I am wondering is if it fixes the compatibility with Aperture 2.0. As it is now, you need to quit Aperture before allowing time machine to run a backup or else Time Machine skips the Aperture library entirely, which is bad news when you go to restore your backup. I guess I'll install the update and give it a try!

I've played around with AEBS and AirDisk a bit today. A bit confusing.

What happens to you guys when you restart you computer? Does the directory automatically get mounted?

What if you already have a backup by USB directly connected to the machine and then connect it to the AEBS? Will it create a new backup?

It's about time... When Time Capsule came out before there was an offical ABES+USB drive back up system, I lost all hope. Now that extra $400 that I spent when Leopard came out can finially go to some good use...
