right. sorry, i missed that part but i remember you saying that.

unfortunately they only way to really verify that its working is to reformat your disk and start with a new backup. i can 100% confirm that a brand new backup on a clean disk with no hacks is working.

Only way i can get it back is to use the:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

mindflux, you keep mentioning "previously hooked up to macs" but what about my reformatted harddrive? reformatted meaning, wiped out, fresh, nothing on it. first thing it was ever hooked up to, being Airport Extreme Base Station and connected to time machine from there. working fantastically.

Yes, but you formatted it ON a Mac. Which writes the .(randchar) file to the drive! Right? How else did you format it?

just give me a ls -la /Volumes/DriveLabel

youll get something like this:

Code:
ls -la /Volumes/Batmanuel/
total 424

-rwxrwxrwx@ 1 Mindflux staff 6148 Mar 19 18:08 .DS_Store

Never mind... it somehow likes me now

Now here's a question. Can I add a partition to my External if it already has data on it, without having to reformat the ENTIRE HD???

I.E. Does mac allow me to add a partition to a HD that already has data on it, such that I can set up a separate area on it, so Time Machine doesn't use ALL of my storage??? (I'll be getting more externals eventually... now that this works!)

Yes, but you formatted it ON a Mac. Which writes the .(randchar) file to the drive!

So, even if you buy a new drive, format it in OS X Extened (Journaled), it will write the .randchar file? So why didn't this work when I formatted my drive before in OS X? Your logic isn't correct my friend....

if this were true, then Time Machine would be working with network drives since day one.

anyway, it works, regardless of this mindless chatter.

My build number changed also and I could have sworn the date at the bottom before the update was 1983 - 2008, not 1983 - 2007, as it is now.

CONFIRMED:

Copyright date changed from 2008 to 2007 after the update.

Before Update:
2rnv2q

After Update:
2p2den

Updates to 7.3.1

I'm surprised no one is commenting on this. This is HUGE!!! The firmware for AEBS is what we've all been waiting for. So far after doing the firmware update, my Macbook is able to keep the Airdisk connected after sleeping and the Time Machine recognizes my Airdisk.

In leopard you can resize mac partitions nondestructively using Disk Utility.

Something in one of the new updates caused it to work? That's what I am trying to diagnose.

We can't compare yesterday to today with new software alone as the sole cause, because obviously that's not it.

Clearly something changed......no one is saying something didn't change. But you insinuated that it had worked all along until you made it not work, when it didn't work for everyone else before. You're like an obnoxious child man!

obviously thats not it?????? i know 30 minutes ago this wasn't working. then i got new software, and then suddenly it was. i'd say that this new software is certainly the reason its working. i'm sorry to hear that yours isn't, but so far, you're the only one reporting such problem.

You are extremely obnoxious, btw. Might want to work on that....

Right. I'll get right on that as soon as you figure out how to use terminal.
:D

Why not help those not so fortunate in diagnosing why it works for some and not others?

If you read the thread I am *NOT* the only one reporting the problem.

WHO DID IT WORK FOR BEFORE THE UPDATE? People who used the terminal hack, and who else????

P.s....I'd like to learn terminal and I'm sure it would help me further a career in mac programming, but I think the general ability to interact with other people in a non-hostile, normal manner is a bigger priority....

Airport Transfer Speed was tremendously improved after update. Copying a file from my wired Mac Mini to the wirelessly connected Macbook goes about 3 times as fast. It's still slowing almost to a halt after a few MBs but that's because of my Netgear Router having problems with LAN networking.

Ermm. you changed what you wrote so I need to re-quote it.

yes, I disabled the previously working hack to 'experience' everyone elses luck.

I can get it back with a matter of 30 characters or so, however I'd rather do it 'Apples way' if it actually was intended to work as so.

mindflux,

turn off the hack, connect a different disk if you dont want to erase your current one, and see if it shows up in the list of Time Machine backup disks.

Hack is off... hence why drive isn't showing up.

I'll reconnect the drive to a mac and write a file to it and then re-connect it and see.

*Edit: No luck there. Still doesn't see it.

A few weeks ago, I directly connected my external to my Powerbook. I wanted to make at least 1 backup. Oddly, though, is about an hour after I reconnected the external to my Extreme, Time Machine started backing up.

It did it for 2 consecutive hours, but since it was really dragging my machine down, i turned off time machine.

As far as this update goes: I'm thrilled I didn't drop the $$$ (That I really didn't have anyways) on the time capsule when I ordered my new MBP. I guess this whole update was lose-lose for apple, who are going to get heat from those who went out and bought Time capsule after already owning an Extreme.

Why does my copyright date go back a year and my build number advance? Anyone got an explanation for this seemingly unlogical behavior?

It is a lose/lose situation....but they get sh*& from people when they stick to their guns (i.e backups just over time capsule) or from Time Capsule owners who now have a product that is not so special....They should've had this capability in the AEBS from the beginning and then released Time Capsule.

The hard drive selection sheet in Time Machine's preferences now has a 'None' option. I have a feeling that's new, isn't it?

edit: hmmm... that's now disappeared. Odd!

I have None in my selection and I haven't installed the update.

x2! So far I've noticed that my DNS lookup times are awful with this update. Before the update, everything was flying and pages where loading amazing fast. After the update, it's taking 5 / 6 seconds of DNS lookup time.
Check these out, I did this because of your post:
