These things are so beautiful you'd want nothing short of perfection. In any case, as some suggested, if your computer is in great shape except for that one defect, keep it. Otherwise, you will just be exchanging it for a machine that might have some other defect. Good luck.

Well then he should send it back again!

I can not really understand why people say its "just" a small thing so live with it. What would you do if you bought a new BMW and you find a 2cm scratch on the hood, live with it? (i certainly wouldn't)

This is not the same. The 'scuff' is so small, barely noticable. Wait until he gets a new MBP and after 2 months, and has 10 such scuffs on it from normal use. Is he thoroughly cleaning his MBP every hour to remove any grease from his skin that is on the machine?

This is so insignificant. This is the same as dumping your hot girlfriend because you find that she has a cavity filled with silver in one of her back molars. Oh my god, her teeth aren't perfectly white everywhere!!!!
 
First though was: Are you for real? But than again... I'm waiting for delivery of my new macbook pro myself and no way I'm going to be satisfied with even the slightest bumb, dent of anything. Hell... I paid nearly 3000 Euro... there will be no dents :)
 
If Apple does agree to do something about this would I have to send in my laptop and they send me a new one said:
Not worth the hassle...they will not cross ship unless they charge another full unit price to your CC.

I had a small ding on the underside of my 13" MBP and they gave me a $75 discount rather than dealing with a swap or repair. Go for the discount...it took you a couple days to notice it...can't be that big of a deal breaker.
 
Wow, that is kinda a small defect.....having said that, I have yet to get my hands on mine....I'm sure I would be heartbroken if there were any scratches, dents.

I'm in the worse situation that I don't have a apple store anywhere near me, so would have to deal with shipping it back...waiting for new delivery :rolleyes:

If everything else is fine....screen aligned properly, no dead pixels, no dents or more noticable scratches, no black gunk, no strange trackpad issues.....I personally - in my situation - would email apple support with that picture, stating the situation and that you are unhappy, but as this is only very minor cosmetic damage, ask whether they would advise arranging for a replacement. Perhaps state that you are concerned that APPLE did not catch this in quality control.

This would either have apple replacing it, (cross your fingers and hope you don't get a real lemon :eek: ), or in the very least give you an email stating that they regard the scratch to be minor and not indicative of any more serious damage.....giving you a stick to clobber someone with later, if anything does go wrong and they use it as an excuse not to repair under warranty.


Just my thoughts...I've never dealt with Apple Customer Services....only own an iphone, (MBP is ordered :) ), but never had any problems. Reading some of the threads here, I'm crossing several digits and hoping I don't get a strong citrus flavoured apple. :p

This is the best advice on this thread.

1) Get evidence that the dent isn't a factor in future possible damage. (Keep the email correspondence)
2) Notify Apple Customer Care that you are unsatisfied with their quality control.
3) Get the final decision whether you can exchange it or not without paying the restocking fee, without driving to an apple store and haggling.

Are they able to send you a replacement brand new and then you send the old one back like with iPhones?

And if I have to return it and then re order how long does that normally take to get the credit?

Why dont you call applecare and find out? Thats the best way really. No matter what we "think" here the person taking your call is the one who decides really.

Would be nice to know if they simply swap it with a new one as i suspect they do but again its just a guess.
 
I was expecting a dent, and I'd return it for a 1 cm long dent, as you described it. However, once I saw the photo, it's like a scratch that's even not a scratch (because it doesn't look deep). You're going to scuff it anyway. Just consider it your first scuff and enjoy your perfect laptop.

Again, I'd suggest you return it if it was actually bad, but I'm the type who always thinks about how environmentally unfriendly can you be to return a laptop for that reason. Another laptop is made, shipped, etc etc. I know people would then argue that it would end up in the refurb section of Apple's online shop, but it's still another laptop that never had to be made. Just IMO. Return it if it's worse in real life than in the photo. Otherwise, just be glad that you got a laptop that works perfectly and has no performance flaws.
 
I'm going to have to side with most of the people in this thread. The scratch is so minuscule that it's not even worth the time to exchange it for another one. Enjoy your new MBP!
 
OP: it's hard to tell from the photo whether this is an actual dent, where the metal itself is indeed deformed, or just a surface mark of some kind.

That said, my old MBP accumulated a number of marks like that over time, no matter how much care I took to avoid them. Sometimes the zippers on the laptop bag would lightly scuff against the casing leaving them, or someone wearing a metal watch might type in something and leave a faint scratch on the palmrest. It even once got quite a pounding from a careless, clueless TSA agent when I was traveling to a conference. And yet, in spite of the blemishes, it continued to work fine. The cosmetic wear just ends up being part of the machine's normal use, a fact of life. And oftentimes the marks and scuffs are so minor and tiny that most other people don't even notice them... only you do, because you know your system well and know where to look for them.

You can return if you really want to, and Apple might even give you a replacement, but unless your keep your new MBP hermetically sealed and never take it out anywhere, then it's going to get another mark like that and many other, bigger ones as time progresses. And you will not be able to count on Apple to give you a new MBP every time someone so much as thinks negative thoughts in its vicinity.

And if you really do baby it and refuse to take it anywhere that it might risk getting even the slightest mark on it, then are you really enjoying and using your purchase, or did you just buy a very expensive aluminum and glass sculpture?

Before you do take it back (and I have no doubt you will), try this: find a good vinyl eraser (like this one) and very lightly rub it over the mark you're seeing, to see if it goes away. This "cleaned" my MBP of many of the marks it accumulated over time quite well. If this works, then it may save you a trip.

You know it's really an issue that I'm trying to deal with. I seem to switch back and forth on wether it's even worth the time to even bother with it. Somedays I really don't care and some it annoys me but just like everything else like my iPhone, it does get scratches eventually and I just live with it..


I will try that plastic eraser and if worse comes to worse someone in another thread talked about using the silver sharpie LOL.

1) make an appt and convincing the geniuses that the machine needs replaced
2) drive to a store or send it back
3) not have a computer for a while

am back. been wanting to answer this for a while :p

i dont see that as being a hassle, they would most likely let you keep your laptop until its ready, hardly a hassle.
 
Mate just call applecare and then decide if it is worth replacing for you. Apple is a great company and would most likely prefer you to be happy. They can resell it anyway. Don't listen to people telling you not to worry about it if it concerns you.

You do have a point about the shipping and environmental side-effect but i think if people go along with "ah its just a scratch" or "i will scratch it sooner or later anyway" idea then we are kicking our-self in the nuts. Why you ask?
Well Apple will lower the standard and maybe even refuse a change in the future if people accept "defect" products. I say defect since a scratch is a scratch no matter how little (its not part of the design but ok saying defect is a bit of a exaggeration i admit). If you buy something new it should be new without any dent in my opinion so the quality department have made this one glide with the hope the end user will just dont care which i dont really like.

I understand this is very very tiny but i personally had my MBP for over 1,5 year before selling it without a single scratch as i take very good care of my stuff and even something like that would tick me off but that's just me :)

As others have said, just call Applecare and explain your situation. I'm sure they will help you out. So far i have had only had great experience with them. After all you are paying very high premium for your product. ;)
