I don't get it, not one bit. I have an Apple Watch series 3. It is nice for what it is, but as others have mentioned it is an investment in technology that will go obsolete. These are not watches you will hand down to your kids or grandkids, they will end up in landfills as worthless junk. They do some neat things and Apple knows how to sell, the fact that people pay the crazy prices for Hermes or Edition versions, plus the watch bands just shows how strong Apple's marketing is. The materials the watches are made of don't matter, you won't have the watch for long before you need to upgrade to get the latest releases that let you know how many hair follicles you have left. Mine was a gift, if I was to spend this kind of money on a watch it would be an actual watch that will never get software updates or be obsolete.
The materials certainly matter. They have different weights, different durability, and different color. Is a smartphone a waste? A laptop? Neither of those things can do biometrics or track your activity to the level of a wearable...again, the term obsolete being thrown around like it happens every day.

Otherwise, "obsolete"? For something to be obsolete it's no longer useable with current technology. Even the first Apple Watch isn't obsolete yet.

To be fair, it hasn't had an OS update since Watch OS 4 and there was a bug with early versions of iOS 15 that "broke" Apple Watch Series 0, 1 and 2 for a time before being mitigated in patches.

But I agree with your general point, My Series 0 was still working fine for what I wanted it to do (Fitness tracking) when the Series 4 dropped. I just liked the larger screen and better performance which is why I updated. So I chose to update - I was not forced to update. :)

Apple needs to have some kind of a special yearly trade in for these over expensive models of the Watch. Spending $1,000 or $2,000? which is what it sounds they plan on charging for this rugged edition sounds a bit too much.

Maybe offer like a $200 trade in when going from Apple Watch 8 Edition to Apple Watch 9 Edition.

The trade in on the editions is nearly $300 already.

The case on my Aluminum Space Gray Series 4 has held up great. Sure, it has some scuffs, but you'd have to be within a foot of the watch to have a hope of seeing them even when you are looking. To actually notice when you're not looking, inches. The SCREEN, on the other hand...

Apple Watch will be a NO until a 7-day battery. 18hrs lol WTF! How can you all be such slaves to the charging brick when alot of android watches are giving you 7-14 days battery. It's truly liberating! Dosnt matter that 10 features are all 10/10 when it is gimped on the most important feature...battery life!
how long does the battery on your iPhone last?
yet people seem to be happy to have to only charge once per day, or snap an add battery on the back ...

Apple does a piss-poor job of marketing the higher-end edition watch benefits. Many ppl just don't know what they're getting in regular vs edition watches, and only understand that they are shinier. Apple needs to make it clear that:

- DLC coating on black Hermes watches is damn near indestructible, and is far different that the scratch-prone stainless finish
- All edition watches have sapphire
Amusing—“Apple does a piss poor job of marketing the higher-end edition watch benefits”. This fits in nicely with learned analysis by Apple forum commenters of late that Apple is “Greedy”, “Elitist” and a company that is NOT to be supported! Oh wait, I almost forgot. Many Apple Watch owners are “SLAVES” to the charging brick when they could purchase Karl Marx Android editions that keep you running for 7-14 days. Workers of the World UNITE!!

I’m buying 2 of the new Elitist High end Watches. I don’t care what the specs or “benefits” are. I buy Apple’s high end because the device is merely a “status symbol”. To flaunt my affluence. And to gently mock those of you who can’t afford the very best!!! Laughs!

Apple will always make just barely affordable products for the proletariat. Just so they get in the party!!

I have Epix 2 and AW6 SS side by side, what is exactly disabled on my Epix other than always on screen?

That's two weeks worth of battery life vs 1.5/2 days. Rough on Apple.

The Apple Watch is half the weight, for starters. It's also doing a lot more in the communication and general purpose computing area than the Garmin. There isn't some lack of efficiency here.

I always hated that "Edition" branding. It needs an adjective
I could not more strongly agree with this. It's no different from calling it the Apple Watch Version. There's a word missing here. I can only assume calling something "Edition" was established nonsense luxury verbiage and that's why they went with it.

🍎 & 🍊 one less device to worry about daily, and my phone is the least used device compared to laptop, earphones, watch...

I've said before, make it bigger, I don't mind Epix at 70 grams

Apple should us LiquidMetal in its designs. The amorphous metal alloy does not scratch, its lighter and can be molded at a much cheaper cost. Apple used them once to produce an iPhone tool but never took advantage of the ease of use in molding.

I'm going to be annoyed if this Pro watch has a bigger screen. I always buy the "cheap" aluminum watch. I'm not paying 2-3 times as much just to get the biggest screen, and I want the biggest screen.
You’re not alone! That is the point of high prices. To “annoy” those who decide they know what Apple should build and at what price. No matter! Apple does not listen to it’s many embittered and complaining consumers. That’s how they became the most valuable company in the world. (Or close).

No one in the watch community wants a Titanium watch 😂. Again I know these are not marketed towards them and titanium sounds strong and tough to the average person.

While it is lighter and I do prefer it in my knives as the handle material, I would never spend $1000+ A titanium timepiece.

I would gladly play over $1k for a ceramic series.

Me here being content with my aluminium S6. 😅

No that’s a quote. I admire a consumer who doesn’t come here pretending to be a marketing expert, a computer design savant or an “elitist status seeking” buyer. Please come and bring your refreshing contentment more often!!

I’d rather buy a Tissot than a charge every day watch!

Hmm no thanks on this model. For me I’ve been fine with Aluminum.

I am looking this year to upgrade my series 3 to a series 8.
Considering jumping up to stainless steel this time so I can get a sapphire face and back side to help with micro scratches, particularly the back side.
Don’t STOP at the “Stainless Steel” Level. Come to where the flavor is! Fly High with Eagles. The New Apple Watch PRO Reach for the STARS!!! Titanium is YOURS!

My guess is making a watch case out of the material is still more difficult and/or expensive than machining it from a billet of Aluminum, Steel or Titanium.

I have upgraded annually since I started with an aluminum v3 45mm. The improvement in health and emergency features is why I do so. My concession to longevity has been the flexible stainless steel Milanese band that had to be replaced last year because the magnet fell out of it so it would not stay in a fixed location. The other great feature of that band is it is infinitely adjustable so I can loosen it during the day as my wrist gets slightly larger.

So I will be interested to see if the proposed "larger" model can support my existing Milanese band. If not, a price approaching $1k is too much to just throw the whole assembly away every year. I have never been offered anything close to the purchase price of an iWatch as a trade in value on the new model.

Since the cellular mode and many of the apps do not function out of the USA on the iWatch, the iWatch stays home.

I get out my 1968 "Pepsi" stainless steel, date, and self winding Rolex that can continuously display two time zones. That $375 dollar investment in 1968 is now valued at $3,500.

At least getting the top model iPhone annually allows last year's top model to goto my wife and her prior year goes to one of the four daughters...... We utilize the value over many years.

I remember when Jobs crowed about the Liquid Metal source they had acquired. I hoped for some unique devices to use that material. All we got was device to open the sim door on the iPhones and even that use has stopped now as well.

I can’t imagine the edition was ever worth the money. Titanium and aluminum not looking all that dif to
The eye. These watches are completely disposable. Much better to just upgrade every few years than drop that kinda money

The casing alone is worth a lot of money probably. What happened to the watch? You sold it?

No, I never had it. When it was released back then I didn't really have much of an interest in the watch. I didn't buy one until the Series 2, and since then I've been hooked. I've thought about buying one as a few have popped up on eBay here and there but now with the gold plated versions I don't really see the appeal of it anymore.

Its funny though, the person I bought the charging box for sent all of the original Gold Watch information with it. He had sold the watch a while back but had the original watch papers for it.

The leather charging case is actually one of my favorite little unique Apple items. Its really nice leather and is great for travel to use as a charger whenever you need it.
