makes sense.

Although I will die a little inside knowing I never got a chance to buy a ceramic white Apple Watch before I die.
That ceramic white is/was gorgeous.

I am hoping the $1k price point is more to get peeps worked up than [what I suspect is to] get them used to that new reality - which wouldn't be an entirely new strategy from Apple. Its kind of how they roll.
I'm hoping to upgrade my s5, and have always wanted a ore rugged version than has existed. But if the $1k price point holds true (or really, anything close to that - lol), I guess my upgrade plans will henge more on what they have planned for us plebes with the regular s8.

When the device is attached to your body, the durability arguments make no sense to me, you're not dropping your arm on the ground with the watch.
I am when I'm falling off my mountain bike :)
But even something as straightforward as hiking, it's easy to brush an arm against an unforgivingly hard surface (e.g. a rock) and scratch or damage a watch.

What I'd like is a watch shape that's more "compatible" with long sleeves, jackets, and especially gloves. I'm constantly getting my watch snagged on the inside of my jacket sleeves, bike gloves jam into the buttons on the side …

There are already 'powerful watches' on the market that have batteries that last longer than a day. If they are going to make this new 'Pro' watch, they need to step up the battery life and a list of other things. If Apple fails they will hear about it. But there is a fawning part of the 'sports industry' that will applaud the worst products for money and access to perks and swag, sadly. They might be able to carry Apple's water on a failed product, but the undertow of an under thought out and flawed product will take a toll on sales.

But could Apple include a well made bike jersey, or running attire with a watch purchase and win sales? Sure...
unfortunately, Apple has created a mega market for its products that advertise exceptionally well, regardless of real limitations like 18hr battery life. I used to be a massive Apple fan but I hate the fact that they are so far from the mark on the fundamentals and don't even seem to realise it kills me so i moved on to other brands! I still use an iMac for my day to day and that's an incredible product shame about the watch! They will get the battery life at some point but no signs it will happen anytime soon.

Does Apple even try anymore? Slap a logo on insert product here and the Apple faithful will guarantee a generous return.

I hope to be surprised with this rugged model. I want to see Epix-like battery times. But frankly I’m not expecting much. Apple seems less intent on being the best in category, but rather best in margins.

It doesn’t seem like they do… the watch is perfect example of them not trying and just adding another like kind product to an already saturated market… the slap a “apple logo” on any old thing rings true in this case, because the feature list isn’t all that different from other devices on the market at a much lower price point… and as far as style is concerned, these watches have third party cases and bands that change the appearance… so the design regardless of the material used is covered up for the most part. The shape and design hasn’t hardly changed since v.1 of the watch… where other brands out there have multiple design choices. Personally, I view watches as more of a fashion statement… and Apple is just putting out a product that can and will be dressed up to fit the mood and or occasion… and certainly does not offer the value for the $ many of the other brands can bring…

Help: should I get the Apple Watch series 7 stainless steel with my iPhone strictly being on iOS 15…

Or get Apple Watch series 8 that’s around the corner ? And get someone to activate my watch as “family”

I’m not updating my phone, I heavily dislike jumping from iOS to iOS.

I finally found a usecase for an apple watch that's compelling enough for me to get one. Will wait until Christmas, but not looking forward to having another expensive gadget that needs to be updated / replaced every 5-6 years.

I probably would have bought a gold one if there was some kind of trade in program where you can upgrade to a newer gold model for a fee and trade in your old one. A gold watch is very cool, but when it starts being outdated in a few years it feels kinda stupid to pay that much. A luxury watch used to be something you buy for life.

You’ll likely keep that AW8 for 3-5 years.
Would you still not bother to update your iPhone?

Well, when at home you have your homepod mini for Siri stuff. So, that's that.

You leave your house without your phone? I said before AW LTE is super limited to dozen countries and many people are not using LTE AW.

How's battery life on your AW?

I don't have a homepod and it'd be pretty expensive to put one in every room upstairs, downstairs, basement, garage, deck, etc.

I leave my phone behind all the time. Running, cycling, walking my dog, yardwork, walking around the block, etc. Same for the general life at home - most of the time if I'm going to a different room or floor I don't carry my phone unless I know I'll need it. The connectivity of the AW is very freeing from the feeling of having to always have your phone with you.

I find LTE coverage to be just fine where I am. At home the AW uses wifi when out of BT range of the phone.

Battery life is fine. I take my AW off the charger on my nightstand in the morning and the battery lasts until bedtime when I put it on the charger. On days when I've done a really long run or ride I may drop it on the charger while I shower off and it's good rest of the day.

"Obsolete next year"? LoL.... you're funny. You know that's a false statement yet let it roll off your keyboard without a thought (it appears). I had my series 2 until about 6 months ago and, other than battery life slipping, it performed exactly as it did when purchased. So the watch that was supposed to be obsolete a year after I bought it lasted me about 5 years. Folks like you want to compare a smartwatch to a standard watch but you can't.... Your standard watch, at any price, will never perform like a smartwatch.... a smartwatch isn't made to be an investment, it's made to integrate into your tech umbrella and possibly improve one's life. It's a tech device that, unfortunately, has a finite life span. So could we please stop silly comparisons? (not just you.... all that make this silly comparison)
I think you don‘t get the point. If you buy something expensive e.g. made out of gold, platinum, titanium, but the electronics can‘t keep up and can neither be upgraded nor replaced, it makes no sense at all.

Guess you know that 1 year is only somewhat exaggeratedly formulated. But it doesn‘t matter if it is 1 year or 5 years. This thing will be obsolete in a few years. One year later it‘ll lack the new features of the next iteration.

Wait a second - or should you get the AW7 when the AW8 starts selling and sage tons of money?
It is up to you. If you like the AW7 (after the AW8 is presented) and you don‘t need features of the AW8, I would recommend the AW7 for a lower price (got my AW5 Cellular/GPS for about 300€ after the AW6 was released).

If you fell in love with the AW8 and it makes you happy, get the AW8 ..?

I just wouldn‘t recommend getting an AW7 now for the normal price and upgrading to AW8 in a few months …

Apple is going to price themselves out of the watch business. It’s getting to be the same price as the phone with little value in two years. A mid end luxury watch holds its value at least.
Affluent consumers don’t consider a sub $2000 watch to be “luxury”. And certainly not one to be worn over 18- months. It’s disposable

That reminds me of Bobo Fett from Star Wars. Just need to VR headset helmet from Apple.
Excuse me sir. You must be confused. I’ve read on these very forums that the Mixed Reality headset is “useless” and many “don’t know what it’s for”. You will be subjected to all manner of abuse if you even feign enthusiasm for VR in any form. — I wish you Well!

VR/AR is coming and the 'metaverse' will be so big it WILL be bigger than the internet. Probably the biggest step for humanity since the industrial revolution. I don't think it will be an if....more off a when! Its coming are you ready?

Okay that makes sense based on the rumours apparently there’s not going to be a flat design, so I wanted to just buy one. We’re two months away from the new one!
I want to stay on iOS 15.0 on my 13 mini! I have to get someone to activate my AW8

I could usually plan on a couple of hours at the Apple Store if I did an iPhone swap there. Less time is required if I did a full backup at home on my cable service wifi. Then it was just a case of lying the new beside the old iPhone to migrate and then the new one downloads the "guts" to the programs as the day wears on.

With the new maxed iPhones being over $1k, I have them come home to save about $50 in sales tax. The swap is easy enough and I can do other things at the home while the switcheroo takes place. Then I reset last years iPhone and allow it to transfer my wife's data to the "new" to her iPhone and the process continues downstream several more times. Saves the "family" money.

See, I see your points, but disagree. The Apple Watch is a great product if you accept it for what it is. It's more like a 'personal digital assistant', and NOT a sports centered 'do it all' watch like, say the Garmin fenix, etc.

I don't think Apple could rock a 'sports watch' version of the Apple Watch. It's far too much of a battery drainer than a device with that aim should be.

I knew going into the Apple Watch that it wouldn't be a Garmin Edge killer, but it was never meant for that purpose. It was never going to replace a running centric watch either. Hopefully Apple puts a HUGE juicy battery in this AW Pro, and also tweaks the energy thirst of the assorted chips they are using. They could try to throw a massive battery at the project, and might be able to get away with it. Stay tuned?

I would love to know how many gold watches Apple sold, and where they are now…
Well there was that one dude who bought 4 for his dog…

I'd be disappointed if they made the Titanium available only in a larger size. The 45mm is about as large as I want a watch to be, and I was looking forward to upgrading from Al to Ti with the Series 8.
Agreed. Hope they make a 42 ‘small’ one if true. Kind of crazy that the small watch could end up the same size as the old big watch.

My guess is making a watch case out of the material is still more difficult and/or expensive than machining it from a billet of Aluminum, Steel or Titanium.

Looking at their website, it appears that you can not cast thick parts with their 'amorphous metallic glass'. The upper limit is 2mm where standard die casting aluminum (I assume) can do 12mm easily. Making it not necessarily a great choice for some (many) purposes.
