Love the Seriously, what's the point of spending $800 or more on a watch that will be outdated in one year and nonfunctional in under five? Really. Some of us make the kind of money where $800 is nothing to get something that has better materials and looks a bit different than stainless or aluminum. I was looking to get a titanium model 7 when out. I have bought Hermes in the past and if they made a titanium Hermes even got $2k I would seriously consider it.

That is just too expensive. I find the concept of a luxury smart watch frivolous. You’re paying the same price as the analog equivalent. At least a normal watch will last years, if not decades. $399 is the most I would pay for a smart watch and that is exactly what I did.
$1200 is not luxury in the watch world. I have an Apple Watch, a $5k omega, a $4k tag heuer, and a $10k rolex. $1200 is chump change for a watch of any caliber.

I have the aluminium Watch. I chose it for lightness. It’s not a diver’s watch, perhaps titanium is overkill for a Watch.

Me too! Im still rocking the 3 and its very handy! Unlocks my phone and MacBook, controls the music on my iphone
so many cool things, I think $399 is worth it but that's all I'd pay, don't care how it looks.

He’s not comparing to those kinds of watches. He’s talking about smart watches and luxury smart watches, which at this point have a much shorter lifespan than the watches you’re talking about.

Happy August ya’ll. One more month left till we finally get to see Apple’s new hardware.

Mr. Gurman is back with his theories.

So, there’s only going to be Aluminum and Steel Apple Watch left? If Apple decides to ditch the titanium…

New Apple Watch incoming.

Lets get it!!!

So from the fact that CURRENT apple watches in titanium are in short supply, you have somehow reached the conclusion that the NEXT model of Apple Watch won’t be available in titanium?

Have both aluminum & steel.
aluminum feels like a toy with worthless glass.
the steel is the bare minimum for a “watch”.
the titanium is not over priced. It includes extra warranty & a band. I didn’t get it because it looked too much like the aluminum

You have some nice watches, but so long as you don’t abuse them they will last for decades, perhaps even centuries.

Compare the cost per usable year of an Apple Watch to a mechanical watch and they are massively overpriced.

I have had a S0, S3 and now S6. All regular aluminium and never have I broken a screen and only one that got scratched was S0. And I am quite prone to hitting it on doors/tables whatnot. So I really don't see any point in paying even more Apple tax for "better" durability.
But those that do see a reason...Good for you. I am not trying to take anything away from you. It is your money to spend as you see fit!

Just wanted to comment my experience.

Since the S0 I had/have Apple Watches in all available materials (except ceramic and 18K). In my opinion, the only thing the aluminum models have going for them – besides price point – is their lightness which makes a lot of sense for a sports/activity device. OTOH the steel and titanium devices look so much nicer, it‘s an easy upgrade for me for something that you wear on your wrist basically all day, every day. The sapphire crystal is much more scratch-resistant, too. Also, the price difference is quite small when you plan to use the cellular function and compare the LTE models only. In Europe, the LTE Alu sells for approx. 600 €, the Steel for 800€; if you sell the Watch one year later (to get the new one), you get about 50% back. This results in a cost difference of 100 € for one year of wearing a much nicer looking Watch with a much more scratch-resistant display. Well worth it to me.

As for the speculation in the article, I think it‘s quite possible Apple will reduce the available materials for the S7 if it is indeed (as expected) a re-design. They did the same thing with the S4.

This is funny.........I didn't know that my S6 Titanium even had an extra year of warranty until this thread......it was still worth the extra money for me. I like to wear a watch 24/7, which means I need 2 watches. I upgrade every 2 years and retire the older of the two existing watches. That means each watch will be worn for 4 years. I agree with an earlier poster that the ideal watch would be aluminum (light weight) with sapphire (scratch proof), but that isn't an option. If sapphire is a requirement, then that changes the calculus a bit; it is only a minor splurge to get titanium over SS. The light weight and unique look of the titanium made it an easy choice for me.

I love Apple Watch and upgrade every year. I know it’s really not necessary but I can’t help myself. iPhones on the other hand I keep for years. I’ve only owned 4 iPhones… 3GS, 5, 5S and 12 mini. I REALLY wanted the Titanium last year and almost pulled the trigger but I stopped myself because I knew I’d want to upgrade to the 7 and what’s the point of dropping a GRAND on a watch I’ll only wear for a year. And I suspect that the resale value of the edition watches is not great and they are probably harder to resell. Reselling an aluminum Apple Watch is a breeze.
Interesting how people are different. I like a new phone every year but for the watch Ive had the series 1 and am on a series 4 with LTE. I’ll upgrade to the 7, already setting cash aside, but I’m sure I’ll have it for at least 3 years.

I've owned the original Apple Watch, the series 3 and the series 4. All in silver stainless steel, because all the bands and straps with lugs match it, it has sapphire crystal, and any scratches buff out. My series 4 is still going strong without issue and I'll only upgrade to the S7 is there's a good reason to, and I'll go silver stainless steel again. I've had my moneys worth out of my S4 up til now.

I know I'm a minority here, but I want to wear my Rolex/Zenith/Patek and have an Apple Health Bracelet with no face.

I upgraded phone every year but with COVID and having to upgrade in-store here in the UK (which were closed during lockdown) I couldn't upgrade from my 11 Pro Max..... and it's not bothered me one bit... which I find really really odd lol.

I disagree with Gurman. As an owner of a titanium series 6, I bought it for 2 reasons

1) Stronger than stainless steel while weighing only 10% more than aluminium.
2) Has a premium look that doesn't show scratches as much as the stainless steel counter parts.

#1 is especially important since I do workouts and the lighter weight just makes it more comfortable.

The watch has hit quite a few things and so far not a single dent on the frame of the watch or the screen thanks to the sapphire glass compared to my previous series 5 aluminium to which the frame got dinged and the screen sustained a scratch mark.

I plan to wear this watch for 3 years or so before trading up or selling it to upgade to the next model.
Seriously? Lol. All that extra wrist weight must play havoc with your workout! How devastating! Wow.

I always buy the stainless steel one but only every 2-3 years, had the very first one on release day, then series 3 then 5. I might get a 7 if it has some new feature I might like to have. Whenever it does glucose trends I'll get that one right away. iPhone I get every number from very first one but I skip the S models.

As Gurman points out, “Seriously, what's the point of spending $800 or more on a watch that will be outdated in one year and nonfunctional in under five?”
But spending $749 on the stainless steel model is totally realistic?

This guy dense or what

My black titanium Apple Watch has been stellar so far. I had only used the aluminum ones before and by the time the first 6-9 months were over they usually had some nicks and scratches as I do leave my watch on for everything and even though I am careful. The titanium watch does not have one scratch on it, nowhere, even though I have hit it against door knobs, frames and other interesting items . For those of us who like their stuff to be pristine and keep the watch for 2-3 years I think they are a valid choice (especially the black one with the coating as I hear that the silver one does scratch). I would be sad if they stop offering them, though I am not up for an update until the next generation (or the one after) anyway.
And besides, the black just looks really nice compared to the grayish color of the aluminum.

I've had my S6 Titanium since launch and not a single scratch, dent, or scuff has developed. Even if it did, it's relatively simple to buff it out.

The stainless steel watches on the other hand, scratches way too easily.

I have the series 0 in stainless steel and it has micro-scratches you can see only in certain light, although it does give the metal an appealing 'patina'.

I then had a series 4 in aluminium which held up pretty well, but I was careful not to bash it on anything. I preferred the durability of the stainless steel and sapphire crystal.

I'm currently using a series 6 in graphite stainless steel + DLC coating. It's still 99% flawless (one small scuff inflicted by the DLC on another of the same model, when they made contact during an activity Apple don't offer a workout for 😉).

Looking forward to upgrading this year if there's new sensor technology.

Don't worry guys, series 7 will be a minor update.

series 7 will be the every 3 year major body redesign, this time with "flattish" sides and smaller bezels. it is likely to be "minor" in terms of new sensors or features but you still have to consider it a big update when the body resets like it did back at the series 4.

He wasn't. The person he was replying to literally said, "the analog equivalent" (ie watches like Omegas and Rolexes that have mechanical movements).
