Aren’t the titanium models tougher and lighter than steel and especially aluminum models? If so I definitely know people that would pay extra for those attributes and honestly view the aluminum watch models as too fragile for their lifestyle.

For the extra $100 the titanium costs over the stainless steel, you also get an additional sport band and an additional year of warranty. That's not too hard to justify.

However, what I really want is an aluminum case with a sapphire display, so no scratches on the display.
I wish I’d known this before buying my SS.

I wish Apple could figure out how to make the watch more modular where you could swap out the screen/unit for the next gen. I’d even be good with having to send in my Watch for this swap (kind of like you have to send in high end watches for service). I hate that Watch‘s lifespan is limited by its battery and somewhat by its processor.

I never realized that you get those bonuses. If one is planning to pay money to get stainless steel then might as well upgrade to titanium.

He wasn't. The person he was replying to literally said, "the analog equivalent" (ie watches like Omegas and Rolexes that have mechanical movements).
He also said “same price.” The watches mentioned aren‘t the “same price.”

A $1200 analog watch costs a small fraction per year of usefulness compared to a $1200 luxury smart watch.

Fluff piece and click-bait by Mark Gurman. You can bet $$ Apple will continue to have a high-end model with the Series 7. The additional $100 for titanium model includes extra band. It's a good deal if you like the stainless steel model. Whether the high-end model is titanium, ceramic or some other material, Apple will keep offering it to those who will pay up.

Have both aluminum & steel.
aluminum feels like a toy with worthless glass.
the steel is the bare minimum for a “watch”.
the titanium is not over priced. It includes extra warranty & a band. I didn’t get it because it looked too much like the aluminum
Couldn’t agree more. People are really so pressed over $800 for a watch.

Remember when Apple used to claim that the Apple Watch Edition would essentially have the prestige of a Rolex, and would be timeless and desirable enough to be passed down as an old heirloom to your kids? I still find it annoying that they thought we’d all be oblivious to each Apple Watch becoming obsolete within a stretch of a handful of years due to software and hardware updates, while fine Rolex watches can essentially be cherished forever.

Gah! I was hoping Apple would keep it around. I never got to buy one but my Series 4 works well and I don’t feel the need to upgrade often. Would suck if I missed it entirely. Based on the rumors of new sensors I’m waiting for Series 8 next year. With the rumor of the iPhone Pro going titanium I hope they keep the titanium Apple Watch around. Maybe we could get an Apple Watch Pro? Hah.

Agreed. That person has absolutely no idea what they’re talking about. I know people with S0/S1/S2’s which still work.
I still have a 100% working 0! The only downside has been no updates & obvious 3rd party software limitations. I've only ever needed it for Cal, email, weather, phone & steps. I just update the bands.

Everybody who I've ever asked, thinks it is the current model. 7 upgrade this year tho.

I've had my S6 Titanium since launch and not a single scratch, dent, or scuff has developed. Even if it did, it's relatively simple to buff it out.
Not a single scratch, yet you went to the trouble of searching out a video on how to remove them on your watch? 🤔😏😂,...okay.

I would have been willing to purchase a series 5 ceramic. I love ceramic bezels on my watches and to have an entire watch made out of that material for $1200? My only reservation was it would be a brick once the battery died. Check eBay listings for them and tell me they

I agree with other people that aluminum and titanium looked too similar. Heck even stainless isn’t too noticeable until you get within a few feet.

I really hope they get rid of the titanium and bring back ceramic. Average consumer won’t spend that on stainless or titanium and the watch enthusiast hate titanium watches.

How do you get $100? The 44mm is $429 in aluminum and $849 in titanium.

I agreed with everything he said except the part about "completely unusable in 5 years". I think Apple Watches will last longer than that, even if they don't support all of the latest features.

I can’t believe they have cornered a market just like they did with the iPhone where ppl are obsessed with upgrading every year.

This is what Apple non-users don't understand about Apple. They only brought out the Watch when it was ready to disrupt the industry. And it did. Just like the first iPhone did, and the first iPad. And the first Mac, for that matter.

The stainless steel watches on the other hand, scratches way too easily.

I have the ss4 and it has no major scratches, which is nice since I’m clumsy and don’t generally baby my things. I say major because I’m sure there are hairline ones but I also don’t stare at my watch all day. The only disappointment is the white isn’t as nice after years of sweat and abuse but it’s still white (just not bright white) and so I’m ok.

I almost got the Hermès watch but I couldn’t get the band I wanted. Then when they intro the band with new colors esp magenta I almost jumped for it until I realize it was too close to release of s7 and if im going to pay that much for a watch I’d want it as I want it and from day one.

most likely I’ll just upgrade to the next ss unless there’s a Hermès combo I like and can get.

I do feel a bit ridiculous spending that much on a watch but I’ve never been one to wear traditional ones.

but im probably going to get the ss and then buy a leather bracelet from Hermès and spend just as much as a Hermès Apple Watch would cost me 🤪

I’ve been good about not upgrading my Apple Watch and so far I’m been good. Titanium series 5. I think I’m ok with holding on for 3 -4 years.
I had S2 until recently as I gave it to my sister. So now I'm ready for the new ones. It was good experiment to see whether or not I will miss it and frankly, I don't miss it much but for fitness and notifications I do so decided to get them again.

Gurman is right, its stupid to waste money on this type of product. Its not Rolex or any other classical watch that is pretty much timeless. This tech is outdated very quickly and unusable within 10 years. Rolex etc. lasts generations.
People who spend on Gold, Ceramic, etc. just want to show off that they have money and its a vanity thing. Nothing else. (also stupidity :D :D :D )
I could say the same thing about a depreciating 1400 smartphone that loses 40% of its value in 1 year so nearly worthless in 4 years.

A few General comments:
  • He didn’t say Apple Watch is useless after a year he said it’s outdated. Which it is. By definition. Once the 7 comes out the 6 is no longer the latest version. And this happens every year. If you‘re the type that likes to upgrade every year it’s understandable not wanting to pay for stainless or titanium. But of course you can keep it much longer and that’s cool too. If I didn’t upgrade every year I’d buy the titanium.
  • The fact that a Rolex costs $10,000 is not relevant. Apples and oranges. A Rolex is a multi-generational mechanical watch that will run for a century or more if properly serviced ever 5-10 years. And they don’t release a new version every year with half a dozen new complications (so to speak) or new software that won’t run on your 5 year old Rolex etc.
  • I‘ve owned the Apple Watch 4, 5, and 6 and will upgrade to the 7. All in aluminum. I understand they‘re not as durable and that’s important for some people but personally I’ve never had a scratch on any of my Apple Watches (case or glass). When I resell my old ones in October they’re always mint. But I’m careful I guess.
  • Telling people that $800 is peanuts and you have $30,000 worth of automatics from Omega, Rolex, etc. is not a good look. I mean that’s awesome. I’d love to own a DateJust or even just a basic no-date Oyster but not everyone has the same resources or priorities and again… apples and oranges.

i completely agree with your on the rolex comparison. that's why when the watch was first introduced i couldn't get my head around the maxed out versions that were running about 40-50k, but why call people stupid for getting gold models that are only a few more hundred but look much better?
