I got my unlocked T-Mobile phone today and popped in my AT&T sim from my iPhone 5 and it's working no problem. However, I got this text message from AT&T:

ATT Free Msg: Your new device requires a new SIM card to give you access to all services. Please visit your local ATT store to get a new SIM. Thanks.

Not sure if I actually need to do so since everything is working fine? Did anyone else get this message?

Yeah, I swapped from my 5S to my 6 and got the same text. Phone's working fine though.

Got the same txt message
I bought a unlocked 64gb iPhone 6 from apple. Works with at&t SIM card.

Is the ATT phone unlocked the same as TMOBILE if you pay full price? Why are people buying Tmobile instead of ATT if they are planning to use ATT simcard?

T-Mobile was the only one you could order online. If buying in store, you can get either one. They're exactly the same.

Thanks

This is great news. Much of the info posted across the Internet on unlocked phones was unreliable. First hand source is best and it sounds like several people were successful.

i waited in line at my local Apple Store in which they announced they didnt have any T Mobile units in which i needed since i have the service. I ended up purchasing the ATT model at full price in which the "Genius" insisted that even though i was paying the phone outright it was STILL LOCKED and not unlocked globally. I got home and popped in my TMO nano sim and all my services are working fine including WiFI Calling and LTE.

Hi All,

I am glad to know that is unlock
i ordered ip6 64 t-mobile and received today in USA, still to ship it to KSA, will post the result after putting my KSA sim card, hope will work

Good to go as well; 128GB T-Mobile, No contract price...removed T-Mobile SIM, placed AT&T SIM and activated, all good w/ voice, LTE & Data!

Stop asking apple reps anything about the iPhone. In my experience, they are completely clueless. Just consult the forums.

Quick question... How important is the whole "remove the T-Mobile Sim, and insert the new carrier's Sim" before switching the phone on, for the first time?

My friend from NYC just took delivery of my iPhone (directly delivered from Apple.com) for me, and will be bringing it to Europe for me next week. If she switches it on with the T-Mobile sim inside, could it cause me a problem with my local carrier?
I doubt it, but I just want to be sure.

On Apple.com the only contract free full price option was to buy a T-Mobile device.

Also no waiting in lines, I can just stay in the comforts of my home and wait until the UPS drops off my iPhone.

Seems like a win win to me.

Confirmed unlocked.
I got that weird text about getting a new SIM card. Everything seems to be working so I am assuming AT&T is just trying to muscle 40 dollars out of everyone since they didn't get us on contracts. And contracts is their business model.
I received a carrier settings update right away, and I did it. Could this have something to do with it?
We'll see.

You should be fine. Just do a restore in iTunes if it doesn't work right away.

I don't have any hard data, but:

AFAIK, the locked/unlocked status is attached to the IMEI number in a big Apple database. What SIM is first in the phone has no bearing. Basically, the phone comes down the production line, a [CARRIER X] SIM is inserted, then the database is updated so that the phones IMEI is locked to [CARRIER X].

If you could bypass an AT&T lock by inserting a t-mobile SIM before powering it on for the first time, I think we would have heard about it by now.

So, no, it shouldn't matter.

I also have a suspicion that other information is stored in that database along with the IMEI. When my cousin unpacked his AT&T 6, purchased using his father's upgrade discount (because they have some old sharing plan), I advised him to take out the preinstalled SIM card and put his own from his 5 in it before powering it on and restoring from a backup. Despite doing that, the iPhone complained that the SIM card didn't match the number used to upgrade the line and he should contact AT&T. He went to an AT&T store to fix it, and then his poor dad's phone line was completely cut off. Which shouldn't have happened because he activated it with a different number. I haven't checked to see the outcome but stuff like this really disappoints me.

Tmobile "Unlocked" iPhone 6 is Actually Locked to Tmobile?

Does it have any T-Mobile logo on it anywhere, on software or hardware?

iPhones never have carrier branding on them, regardless of whether they're locked or unlocked.

The Apple guys made a point of going down the line this morning and declaring that they have no unlocked phones for sale, and that even if you pay full price, it will be locked. That is just plain malarky. If you pay full price at the Apple store, the phone is unlocked period.

They are obviously trying to protect the carriers and get you to sign up for a contract. But it's a complete lie.
The guy at my local Apple store said the same crap. He knows nothing!

Mods need to sticky one of these "is the T-Mobile from Apple unlocked" threads because like last year, I'm certain there are going to be tons more threads asking the same thing over and over again.

Some of those Apple employees are useless. I had one tell me how bad T-mobile sucks and to only use Verizon or AT&T. The reason T- mobile iPhones are locked if you buy at a T-mobile store is because they don't have contracts. You can unlock it by paying off the device. Once you do that then it's unlocked.
