Except if you turn 3G off, you're paying $30 for data with no SMS now.

If Apple/AT&T offered an EDGE phone, or at least an EDGE/200SMS for $20 plan for the 3G phone (to keep GPS) then I'd be much less pissed.

Im a little confused by this post....

Do u not get SMS when 3G is off???

lol no he is stating that the price of the planing now is we pay more and dont get sms. They must understand that its a pda phone and we now on the pda plan things don't last forever. They need just be happy for what they had.

To both michael's.. thank you for helping people to try and see my point!

It would be good if someone could find some actual battery reports from SIMILAR SPEC 3G phones if there are many!

Well thats a different issue! One you should take up with AT&T.. look at the canadians, they were pissed at their prospective plans and they voiced it!

The O2 deals may not be the best but we get unlimited data, 'x' amount of mins and 'x' amount of SMS.... at least O2 got something right, seems AT&T have dropped the ball with this one!

I don't even think I would need to do that, the at&t tilt is only 4 hours talk time and don't even have 16gbs internal memory, nor full web browsing. I remember my t-mobile dash on EDGE only use to get around 3 hours of internet max.

Well the N95 isn't exactly similar in specs, it has a better camera, and a few more features, but it is a pain to use and the music/game/internet feature leave a bit to be desired. it does however boast better 3G battery life. http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2007/10/us_3g_costs_nokia_n95_a_mere_h.html

Well that was the option you took, neither att or apple put a gun to your head and said upgrade or die. Most of us understand that 3g and gps sucks the crap out of the battery. If you don't like it just return the phone and wait till technology advances, and second all phones that has 3g does the same thing battery dies quickly.

And that's exactly what I'm considering doing. I just fired off my complaints to Steve, and I have 12 more days to decide if I want to keep this phone.

But you're wrong, this could be solved, partially, if AT&T (or Apple pressured them to) allowed an EDGE/200 SMS plan for 3G iPhones with the old pricing.

Battery life would be the same as first-gen, and they wouldn't be price gouging.

I'd be happy then, as would many others, I assume.

Or, Apple should just sell the EDGE phone again as an option. Both parties are to blame here.

I doubt that its because of cheap pricing, apple makes their money regardless I doubt they will lower their quality of products because of pricing and risk ruining their regulation of good products. Also we should of been charged those pricing from the beginning of the first gen, we must face the fact that we got a discount and that discount is no longer available. The phone is a smart phone and we should of been charge the 30 dollars a month with no text messaging. And also complaining to Steve jobs would get no you where, most likely there is people like me reading those emails and disregarding them.

why offer a touch screen! Silly question! Because its what the consumer has asked for... innovation, speed, up to date technology!

First, 3G is hardly up to date technology, My HTC Titan had it 2 years ago, and I can keep 3G active, talk and surf all day and have battery left at 10pm. This is at least 2X the battery life of the iphone.

second, what the hell does the touch screen have to do with this discussion.

its a 3G phone! you shouldnt be expected to turn on/off 3G...PERIOD!

Their reputation is already being attacked with high profile articles about the battery being a joke from sites like the NY Times.

The battery is a problem.

The problem needs to be addressed somehow.

And yes, complaining to Steve has met with success in the past. See: people's personal issues with repeated repairs, and the iPhone 2G price drop store credit.

EDIT: It's the damn complacency and irrational fanboyism here that lets these issues persist. I love Apple, but I try to hold their feet to the fire as best I can being just me. If all of us here did the same, they WOULD take notice and deal with these problems instead of you guys trying to find excuses for them.

The touch screen has a lot to do with it, your htc titian is pressure sensitive where the Iphone has a electrical field on the screen, which will use up battery time. The Iphone's 3g chip has probably not advance thru the years from your 2 year phone and also did you check and see if the weight of the phones are the same?

You must understand when the first gen iphone was launched they all complained about the battery also, Then an update came and fixed the problem we only had the phone for 2 days we are yet to see if it is a battery meter problem. And also if you were to read the threads they are problems with the phone charging from sound decks and other products that supply power to the phone.

Also I am not trying to defend apple, its just that we need to notice that everything is not perfect . And we need to understand that we are talking about a phone, some people would swear that its a computer or a 6 million dollar entertainment system we are talking about.

It's a hassle to have to go to settings and turn it on/off.. Seems like someone at apple would be smart enough to write a program to auto manage this!

Its a possibility that there is a program everyday there are new apps reviled everyday so all we can do is wait.

For all the people claiming 3G has better voice quality: does it? Most people I know don't use a 3G phone. They use a crappy landline or your run-of-the-mill cell phone. Therefore, you will probably only get better voice quality when talking to someone else either on 3G or on VoIP. Kinda like if someone with FIOS tried to download something remotely off a server connected via dial-up. The crappier connection is what you'll get.

It does have better voice quality. I think you are misunderstanding how cell phones work. When you place a call to someone else, you have a connection to the tower. The tower connects via copper/fiber/satellite to the central switch and handles the routing to the other person. If you are on 3G, you have a better quality connection to the tower, so the audio you send and receive will be better, more tolerant to lower signal qualities. Doesn't matter what the other person is using, as their voice data is all going to the tower and then being re-broadcast down to you (it isn't a peer to peer connection).

There won't be a program to do this, at least from a third party and doubtful from Apple. Third party developers don't have access to things like the phone settings.

I remember when I got my first gen iPhone on launch, I played with it NON-STOP and as a result my battery was dying quickly. I was constantly tinkering with it, checking mail, surfing sites when my MBP was right next to me. You know what happened? A few weeks went by and before I knew it I was going 5 days at a time without a charge! Same thing is happening now, I've got my 3G out all the time, playing, sending emails, watching videos, looking at pictures, checking weather, talking on AIM, etc. Another couple weeks of this and it'll go back to only being used when needed, not as a toy, and I'll again start going days between charges.

I'm not worried.

Also, for comparison, when I got a BlackJack a couple years ago, that sucker came with TWO batteries...and that was for a good reason. With no way to turn off 3G you would suck a battery dry in just a few hours of use, it was HORRIBLE. I was actually nervous to get the 3G iPhone because of that experience, but so far, I've been very happy.

I haven't got my iPhone yet, hopfully getting it on Tuesday. So, if I have 3G turned off, and I'm on Safari via Wi-Fi and I get a call, does this mean that it will go straight to voicemail?

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know what these guys are talking about, no clue. When I'm using Safari (on my first gen) and get a call, a screen pops up with the caller id and asks me to answer or decline, if I answer safari pauses and picks up again when I hang up. Do I really NEED to browse the web while I'm talking? No.

Most of thing that people don't know about apple is that they are love to release things late or slowly. It creates a hype and you would see a lot of people being happy that they got a simple app for their phone. And also when your a large company apple is willing to bend the rules just for them, if a software company was to make a software that when your phone wakes out of sleep mode and turns on 3g they will allow it.

We really shouldn't have to turn off 3G. It's a pain. My other 3G phone didn't have a battery problem this bad. While i was searching for a new phone last month, before i made the final decision about the iPhone, review after review of nearly every phone, the number one complaint was poor battery.

Can someone explain to me why the NEED 3G at all times?

No wonder you are getting low battery times!
Well, here in Japan the entire network is 3G - there is no 2/2.5G network to fall back on, it simply doesn't exist. So, yeah - I leave 3G on all the time if I want to be able to use my phone. ;)

My battery life is pretty poor. I ran it down to ZERO last night (it powered off in the middle of a movie) and I charged it overnight, in an attempt to 'reset' the gauge. This morning I unplugged it and then went to a coffee shop to relax and to test it out. I turned off wifi, GPS, and Bluetooth (I enabled BT when I got home, as seen in the screenshot below) ... I got the 20% battery warning after 3:05 of use. Here are my usage details:

usage.png

Four hours since I unplugged the iPhone from the A/C charger, I spent that time listening to music while surfing (all of that data transfer was this morning), playing games, and talking on the phone (42 minutes, most of which was spent on hold with Apple trying to get a refund for a non-functioning app) ...

Since I will generally use my iPhone for music + internet about three hours a day, and since I don't always have access to A/C power (commuting on the train, etc) I guess I'll have to buy a battery pack of some sort. If only they were sold here in Japan! I actually checked on my way home but the huge electronics store by my house doesn't have anything good. :(

The problem of the battery drains could be because of third party apps. We are using The phone more than ever because of them, and also apple may have not gotten the gist of conserving power while using people are using the 3rd party apps. We all should wait for a update to see what happens.

I activley manage my battery usage. This means turning 3g off when I'm not going to be making calls and just minor surfing and texts. Battery isn't perfect but it lasts the day no problem.
