Day 2 with 3g on all day and 10% battery left I got:

4 hrs 33 minutes
Standby 1 day 1 hour
Call time - 1 hour 3 minutes.

EDIT: Died at 5:30

Sorry about my noobish question, but how do I turn GPS off?
Is that just location services?
Is there anyway to get settings of google maps?
Thanks

Why do you NEED 3G active all of the time?

I was under the impression 3G was beneficial for when you were surfing, or something of that nature.....

NOT beneficial for phoneing, texting, listening to music, watching videos, etc!

I have planned to have 3G, GPS (Location Services) and WiFi off unless i need them, just like i do with my current 2.5G iPhone....

Can someone explain to me why the NEED 3G at all times?

No wonder you are getting low battery times!

Because you shouldn't have to be bothered with doing that...
Who wants to be bothered with doing that everytime you have a data transfer?

I had a WM phone (palm treo 700wx and 700w) with Verizon for the last couple of years which runs on their equivalent EVDO. You never had to turn it off and battery life blows away iPhone.

Right. People just need to be smart with their phones and their battery life will be fine. If you aren't playing the iPod all day, roaming around on 3G all day, or calling people all day, your phone will drain as every other cell phone on the market

Cheers:)

Now I am thinking that I have a duff battery. I was one of those wait and see and hope that the battery gets better with a few cycles like my old Iphone did. So i have done 4 full discharge and charge cycles.
Used 1 hour of video and 9 minutes of calls today. Phone has been off charge since 8am this morning so thats 7 hours standby.

Battery indicator. (30%) I have 3g on, LS off, WIFI off. Oh and I had airplane mode on while watching the video as I was on the tube. Push email is on for mobile me, but I used to have it on with old 2.5g for yahoo mail. I also reduced my email check for non push accounts to evey hour when it was every 15 mins on older iphone. I sent 2 sms messages and received 2 emails during this time.

BY my calculations I get 7 hours of video use to drain the battery. I used 1 hours of that and hence should have knocked off 15% battery. 7 hours standby should have knocked off what?? another 1%??? LS doesn't use battery unless I use and app that needs it (it was off anyway)...which I didn't so at worst my battery should be 75-80% which is actually what my old Iphone used to do. say even 60%...I am nowhere near apple stats. I think there maybe a load of duff batteries. Will be interesting to see what happens. Then again a lot of people have commented that since upgrading to 2.0 the battery life is messed up. Maybe there is a bug in it which keeps something running!?!? I don't know. Either way something is wrong.

With regards to someone mentioning having to turn things on or off before and after use......cobblers. the phone is a tool and should serve me and not the other way. It's a few seconds each time, but it defeats the purpose of having this slick OS if I need to do that each time. Luckily for the os, maps asks you to allows LS and if you click yes it turns it on for you. You still need to manually turn it off afterwards though.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A345 Safari/525.20)

it's not laziness. These interfaces are designed with smooth workflows in mind. A major point of a device like iPhone is to simplify, not overly complicate things.

And a random sidenote...are you capable of commenting on things in a mature manner? Geez.

Loacation Services come on automatically. If you turn it off and start any app that needs it, the service starts seamlessly behind the scenes (at least Maps works that way).

Does anyone have an answer for this? Searching the forum brings up this thread and another both with the same questions but no answers! :)

Go to Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G

Set to "Off"

You're all set.

EDIT:

Oops...misread your post.

To disable "GPS" go to Settings>General>Location Services

Set to "Off"

Fantastic! Why aren't you still using it?

I had a Treo 700wx and it was an excellent phone. Best WinMo phone ever made, IMO. It was fast, extremely stable, it had tons of features unique to Palm and it went forever on a full battery. But it had all the physical appeal of a brick and by now it's a few years old. I looked at it's successor, the 800w, but it struck me as more of the same so I kept the iPhone and ported my number.

Now, of course, all this having been said, eventually most people will stop constantly playing with their new toy, it will go from toy to tool and battery life will triple. Or better. So it's all relative and I'm not concerned that it goes about the same distance as my Sprint Touch on a full battery. Eventually that phone could go a couple of days between charges and so will this one, I'm sure.

Oh gimme a break! I have a 3G ATT Tilt and it's last days before it dies with everything turned on with the same type of use I give this device.

This was my day:

9AM off the charger this morning after 12 hrs of charging. At 6PM phone was totally discharged and shut itself off. This was what I did with it today:

Bluetooth OFF
3G off
Wifi ON and connected
Push On (with PUSH off MobileMe is useless)
Fetch OFF
ONE (1) Phone call of 2 minutes
Lots of emails received (2 replied to)
1 game (Monkeyball) "demo'd" at work for 3 minutes
Maybe 20 minutes of "surfing the web"

That's it. ZERO POWER. After 9 hours.
Totally DISMAL and useless.

What good is a phone like this if you have to turn off all the features and babysit it all day or keep it on a charger?

Maybe it should be called the OFFPhone instead of the iPhone.

Somethng is wrong.

I really WANT to keep it. But this is absurd. 10 hrs to a fully drained battery?

What do you expect your phone is a no keypad bright display screen phone, that also is a smart phone the last time i checked smart phones don't last long without charging .

yup....

For all the people claiming 3G has better voice quality: does it? Most people I know don't use a 3G phone. They use a crappy landline or your run-of-the-mill cell phone. Therefore, you will probably only get better voice quality when talking to someone else either on 3G or on VoIP. Kinda like if someone with FIOS tried to download something remotely off a server connected via dial-up. The crappier connection is what you'll get.

I knew immediately coming from T-mobile that the phone quality had dropped.
And I can say that the 3G voice quality is much better.

Rubbish!! His quote battery experience sounds like a completely duff battery. He doesn't even have 3G on so it should last 10 hours talk time!! So if he was talking all day constantly it still would have lasted longer than what he actually got.

Get it replaced, but I would wait until the new batches of Iphones start arriving and you can get some "fixed" models.

I guess you haven't haven't checked too thoroughly. :) I've had ONLY "smart phones" for the last probably 15 years starting with the very first Treo phones through the Treo 180, 300, 600, 650 and 680 and for the last year a Blackberry Curve and my wife's Tilt. They ALL, without exception, with the type of use I give them, lasted 2+ days with no charging (with GPS ON in the BB and USED for turn by turn with TeleNav) and 10x more "feature" use then this device (lots of Yahoo IM, lots of Email & web browsing). With everything turned off on my offPhone, er, iPhone, I can't get 1 full workday with limited use without a totally DEAD battery. I'm not referring to "talktime" here. I'm talking about 90% "idle" time. Something is wrong when you are afraid to use the features of a "smartphone" or have to dumb it down by turning off ALL features to be able to last through a workday. Heck, if I could just get through ONE DAY I'd be satisfied. Now I will need to always be "charging" in my car, at work and at home. I hve 2 sync cables and a car charger on order. I really really like this device but this battery issue is a killer.

I think a lot of people are complaining because they're coming from "regular" cell phones that last way longer (obviously because all they can do is make calls). Don't forget everyone - iPhone has a giant screen and all kinds of wireless capabilities that most phones don't have.

It's Thursday now and I haven't charged my iPhone3G since Saturday night. Only lost one bar off the battery meter. Have 3G enabled but everything else off unless I need it. WiFi, Bluetooth, Location Services, Push email (I use Fetch set to manual) all off.

It's WiFi and Push email that drains the battery not 3G.

No battery issues here, and although the battery lasts about half that of my old 6600 classic, that's purely down to me using it a hell of a lot more. My last phone would be idle most of the time cos it was only good literally as a *phone*. Since I've had it, I've constantly kept 3G on, location services on, pretty much everything on, done a fair amount of browsing, couple of hours iPod use, maybe a game or 2, download a few freebies on the app store, a few texts a day, 15min phone call or 2 and still have about 25% left after 2 days or so. No complaints here.

wow my battery isn't anywhere near this bad. I can play music with the screen off for 5 hours and it will only eat a little more than 1/3 the battery. I can surf the web for like 3 hours strait and it only will drop half way. I can play music through the speaker for like 3 hours and that will take 2/3 the battery away.
I actually haven't gotten it bellow 1/3-1/4 left. Thats with a full days usage. I set my phone to charge every night.

Settings

3g off till i need it
Location on
Brightness at 0
screen lock at 1 minute
Wifi on (way faster and uses less power than 3g or 2.5g)
Push off
Fetch 1/2 hour
Bluetooth off
