man, the 4s was the best upgrade ever, despite being an 's'. 8mpx cam over 5mpx, siri vs the ridiculous voice command, and the most important thing for me — for the first time the u.s. you could buy an unlocked version.

Siri is one area where I believe Apple would be much farther along if Jobs were alive.

My rationale here is that Jobs’ leadership style was very aggressive / persuasive, and I believe he would have hired better people and pushed them harder in the first few years after Siri’s rollout. Jobs was also obsessed with ease of use, and I think he would have been furious at Siri’s shortcomings.

10 years and I still cringe when I hear people trying and failing to use it in public. Discretely googling something is more effective and considerate.
Absolutely - the trigger words should be less US-Centric as well (perish the thought). English people certainly dont go around using the word "Hey" in the manner that we are expected to for Siri - and definitely not out loud and in public - its embarrassing.

My toddler does know enough however to say "Hey Siri - why are you rubbish" when it fails (yet again) to play a simple playlist.

I understood when Siri came out that it would take time to get better, but I though that with Apple's ingenuity and capital resources that it would evolve into a very useful tool. 10 years later, I can state with confidence that it is the most disappointing service Apple has ever created.

It feels like it was just yesterday... because Siri behaves like 10 years ago... Trillion dollar company pseudo-obssesed with privacy cant make its assistant useful for fear of processing on the cloud?, c'mon!. The problem that Steve passed away, 10 years later and Tim is an operations guy, not a visionary, not a leader, but it is the less worst thing available. Maybe Apple should bring Musk to replace Tim after all...

I just never got beyond seeing digital assistants as a goofy gimmick. Maybe Siri isn’t the best, but I’ve still seen my friend with a Samsung phone encounter plenty of digital assistant fails. They just all seem pretty dopey to me and I’ll never get used to talking to a computer. The few times I’ve used Siri, even when it works, it doesn’t seem like it saves any time or makes anything easier (the exception would be when driving so you don’t have to take your hands off the wheel, but I try to avoid using my phone at all while driving). Its only appeal is the novelty, which wears off quickly. Now it’s just something I shut off when I get a new device.

For the last 10 years, my typical experience with Siri goes like this ( for this example let's say my girlfriend is named Jane Smith, which I have nicknamed in contacts as "girlfriend"):

Me - Hey Siri, call my girlfriend
Siri - I'm sorry, there's not a number for Jane Smith in your contacts
Me - Hey Siri, call JANE SMITH
Siri - I'm sorry, there's not a number for Jane Smith in your contacts
Me - Hey Siri, call JANE....SMITH
Siri - I'm sorry, there's not a number for Jane Smith in your contacts
Me - $&%*$#&% Siri!
Siri - Calling Jane Smith, mobile

There was a voice assistant built into iOS before Siri, too.

It was the same as the voice assistant that's been built into Mac OS X from the beginning. And actually, I think Mac OS 9 ad earlier also had the same voice assistant.

Those voice assistants from 30 years ago weren't very useful. Siri isn't much better than them.

Edit: It's surprisingly hard to find info on the early voice assistants on Wikipedia... they mention Apple having a project Casper for this in 1992, but there's no mention of when they shipped that in an OS.

The only time i ever use Siri is on the Apple TV, when i miss something because i didn't understand it or was distracted.

"go back 30 seconds"
"what did she say?"

Both commands never fail.

Very rarely i use it to change music while driving. But it often doesn't play what i want or says something like "currently not available"

How in the world has Siri not improved measurably since its introduction? Sure, it's improved a little bit...but the competition has lapped Siri several times over.

Yeah, Siri sucks, but I find Alexa and Google to only be slightly better. Digital assistants are really disappointing and don’t work nearly as well as just picking up the phone to make something happen. I still have Alex (Echo) for controlling my home or playing some music, but I find myself using it less and less. A visual interface is just so much better and provides a lot of information quickly. I also just don’t trust Amazon or Google with my data and am planning on getting rid of all Amazon devices in the coming years. I may buy the HomePod mini eventually, but I’m not in any hurry.

I wish it could contextually understand more than one question without having to say 'Hey Siri' each time.

"Hey Siri, is it going to rain today?"
"Yes, looks like rain."
"How about tomorrow?"
*silence*
"Hey Siri, is it going to rain today?"
"Yes, looks like rain."
"Hey Siri, how about tomorrow?"
"There's a chance of rain after 12am."

I mostly agree. However, they are useful for a small subset of things. They’re great for turning on and off smart home devices, they are great to set timers, and they are pretty good at playing music. Otherwise, they are pretty disappointing, IMO.

10 years of "set a timer for x minutes" .... how did I cope before?

Meanwhile, Alexa effortlessly controls my Hue lights, Blink Cameras, Hive Heating, Ring doorbell, Tapo plugs, Sonos speakers .....
I can only speak for Hue lights since I don’t have those other devices, but Siri does a fantastic job controlling my lights.
