iOS 1.0 had no third party apps, no MMS, no 3G, ...

...yet it was still incredible.

lol I remember playing with it for a little while going through all the functions and whatnot. after a while, I looked at it and said...now what waiting for something to happen. not an important person for people to call me. I still loved it and wish i never got rid of it.

And it's probably the most memorable and best presentation he ever gave...

I think the 1983 announcement and 1984 Super Bowl commercial for the 128k was probably as memorable. 😀

The Apple ][, the Mac, and the iPhone were the game changers for Apple. And the announcements of the latter two were iconic (plus the 1984 commercial).

I turn my 4GB iPhone on every few months and charge it up to keep the battery alive. It still performs better (screen response time, feel) than many of the low-end android phones that I've seen for sale today. Crazy.

Interesting how the home screen basically stayed the same. Not sure what to think about that.

But i guess it works...
The article mentions that the iPhone is expected to see a major overhaul in 2020. The home screen, aka springboard, has not seen an overhaul since inception and many believe it is overdue. Apple could regain short term dominance in the mobile market with groundbreaking innovation in mobile UI.

I played with one of the first gen iPhones when it came out. While it was unique, it was also painfully slow and had a tiny low res screen. It was obvious Apple would sell millions of them, but I didn't want one.

It has a stellar all-screen experience for the time, way ahead of anything on the market.

Changing the Home screen likely means more complicated (look at Android)... and the magic of iPhone is it's simplicity.

I remember being in awe watching that keynote. I was one of those who really wanted it but couldn't afford it -- not the phone, but the service. Remember that only AT&T had it for years, and their contract wasn't cheap (although their unlimited data in retrospect was amazing). So instead I got the original iPod touch when it came out and loved it. When I finally had saved enough pennies, I made the switch to the iPhone (for the 3G version). It really is difficult to see not only how revolutionary it was but also how we lived without it for so long!

Funny that same day they released Gen-1 AirPods:

Taken the next day...it was a weird age of iPod accessories back then:

"Apple has sold well over a billion iPhones since 2007, and as of last January, the company's active installed base had hit 1.4 billion devices."

sold over a billion and 1.4 active... huh?

the level of journalism is sometimes astounding! maths fail on the most basic of levels.

perhaps you meant to write "sold well over 2 or 3 billion"...???

Well I’m sorry for what you apparently accepted as the alternative. Equally Painfully slow and a terrifying UI. We thank you for not getting in line so that someone else could purchase the absolute game changer.

At the same time, it’s still 100% accurate
