The panel is made by LG. But there's a lot more to a display than the panel, like the housing, video electronics, power supply, USB, microphone, speakers and webcam pieces. We all saw how LG screwed up the video electronics here.

Yea agreed...not a massive fan of LG. Even though specs always look good for the money.

There's almost no (no?) end-user hardware to display 8k.

There aren't even any standard cable protocols for 8k signals that I know of: DisplayPort 1.3 can't even handle 5k@60Hz@30bpp in one stream and DP 1.4 doesn't boost the max bandwidth per stream.

Maybe not for the Mac but Windows PC has supported 8K since like 2015/2016. There are lot of GPUs that are 8K capable from both Nvidia (GTX1060 on up) and AMD (RX460 and up) at 30fps using single DP1.3 port, 8K 60fps using dual link DP1.3 or single DP1.4 with DSC compression. Dell is shipping the 32" Ultrasharp 32 monitor and I'm sure other companies will follow.

Even YouTube is 8K now.

Almost pulled the trigger on the monitor, but the reviews have been so 'meh' (even after the shielding fix) - that I can't bring myself to do it.

When Apple left the display business, a little part of me died.

Don't listen to all you read. I appreciate that it's not without problems. But my own experience with 2 of the 5K displays is great and without any problems that actually impact my using them. And I have no concern with the look, they seem fine - and I personally spend more time looking at the quality screen content than the build-style of the display. At the reduced price they are fair value for money.

Wrong. The Anker USB-C to USB-A dongle is $9.99 on Amazon, $1 more.
Nobody makes a USB-C charge cable that can do 87 W except Apple.
The Aukey USB-C hub that's comparable to the Digital AV Multiport Adapter is $6 cheaper, but the reviews universally complain about a squealing noise and failures.

That dongle goes on sale pretty regularly, actually. I picked two up awhile back for $7.99, and Anker also sells a two pack of USB-A to USB-C adapters for $6.99. You lose the cord but that actually works better in some applications.
And if you'll notice, that Apple made A/V hub has the same issues such as failing to wake attached monitors and USB devices on wake/randomly disconnecting both while in use as most similar 3rd party models. This leads me to believe the issue is a driver or perhaps even the port itself on Apple's end. When you have several different parts including the official Apple branded model displaying the same issues, common sense dictates you look at the only thing they all have in common as the cause: they're all plugging into a MacBook.

Also, Apple never discounted the USB-C charging cable anyway, so that's a moot point.

lol. I can't believe Apple is even affiliated with this plastic, zero-thought POS.

I would buy it if I was certain that it would work with a future iMac.
This! I intend to get an iMac with this monitor but at this point, as I understand it, the 2016 MBP is the only computer you can even use this monitor with. I could maybe grab it at this price now for whenever the new iMac comes out but I'm so despondent with waiting on any info and god knows if there will even be a new iMac this year, that I may give up and go Windows before it happens anyway.. meh.

Since early November, Apple has been offering a significant discount on all of its USB-C adapters and accessories, including the 4K and 5K LG UltraFine displays, to ease the transition from USB-A to USB-C for new MacBook Pro owners.

Apple's discount is set to expire at the end of March, meaning today, March 31, is the last day to make a purchase before prices go back up.

At the current time, all accessories and LG displays are discounted by upwards of 25 percent, which is a major price drop. On the 5K LG UltraFine Display, for example, that cuts the regular $1,299.95 price down to $974. For the 4K display, the price drops from $699.95 to $524.

lg-ultrafine-5k.jpg

All of Apple's own USB-C accessories are available at a discount through the end of the day, with prices listed below:

- USB-C to USB Adapter - Was $19, now $9
- Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - Was $49, now $29
- USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Was $69, now $49
- USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter - Was $69, now $49
- USB-C to Lightning Cable (1m) - Was $25, now $19
- USB-C to Lightning Cable (2m) - Was $35, now $29

Non-Apple USB-C accessories are also discounted, with price drops on hard drives, SSDs, adapter cables, and more.

Apple's sale was originally set to expire on December 31, 2016, but after availability issues with the 5K LG UltraFine Display, it was extended until March 31, 2017. Apple could potentially extend the sale again, but it's best to make purchases now if you've been holding off on getting a monitor or a new USB-C accessory.

[doublepost=1490987936][/doublepost]I just got one of the new 5k monitors for work. I used to have two lower resolution displays plus my 15 inch MBP, now I upgraded to the 15 inch MBP with TouchBar and the 5k. I was a little sad that I would have one display less but I have to say that I actually really like it. Having 100% USB-C is really nice and as things become less expensive and widely adopted it will greatly improve. I am thinking about picking up an extra lightning cable before they go up $6.

I just saw some of these LG displays at the Apple Store and boy they look so cheap. I hope Apple will come to their senses and bring displays back to the fold. What a shame.
I type this looking at my two ACD 30" displays that are still gorgeous and workhorses after so many years of heavy use. Come on Apple.

It was a lot of back and forth, but I got a bug free LG 5K monitor and it's stunning. Totally worth the hassle of getting it. You don't know how awesome 1 cable solution with 5K pixels to your eyeballs awesome it is, until you have it.

At $5000 for the Dell 8K, it's not even a viable solution/alternavtive to the LG 5K.

That's the best AV Adapter you'll find. Trust me.

I own one and it's awesome. Love it.

[doublepost=1490991067][/doublepost]If you don't need the 5K and want a 27 inch display that is "head and shoulders" above the LG in panel quality, aesthetic design, warranty (5 years) and has a rich matte screen and is made in Japan using high quality components (versus China for the LG) check out the Eizo EV2750, EV2780 or CS2730. I returned my flawed LG Ultrafine 5K and bought the Eizo EV2750. Very glad I passed on the LG.

Here is a video review on the Eizo EV2750

The Eizo 2750 comes in black which coordinates well with my 15" Space Grey late 2016 MBP and also in white as shown in the video review.

Just a question, in case I'm too sheltered. I have a MacBook and an iMac. For years, I've been seeing all these Apple ads, messages, etc, about the Cinema Display.

So the question is, why would you want a Cinema Display????

Why not just buy a larger iMac for a little bit more?
Are you using it INSTEAD of an iMac and just hooking up your MacBook to it? If so, are you using your keyboard/trackpad from the MacBook to control everything, or do you have another separate desktop bluetooth mouse/keyboard?
I understand if you a Mac Pro user (but doesn't seem like there's too many of them considering it's been years since they've updated it).

It just seems like more of a hassle than just having 2 different computers.

Can anyone explain their set-ups?

This one does: http://www.j5create.com/our-products/usb-type-c-cables/jucx01.html

I use it daily. Normally, I'd prefer the OEM cable, but this is 2.3ft, which is perfect for my desk at work.
[doublepost=1490992105][/doublepost]

Just buy it today, before the price goes up. Seriously. It is the only adapter that works with every display (and both my 2016 MB and 2016 MBP) that I've tried.

I also have the Huawei DisplayMate USB-C dongle. It retails for $89, but Amazon (mistakenly?) had it for $39 and I tried it out. It freaks out with "powered" displays like Cisco Telepresence, where the Apple one does not. I only kept the Huawei because it has Ethernet, and the positioning of the HDMI port give it more room when the power cable and USB accessories are plugged in. The Apple dongle is cramped.

Yep thats pretty long time, BTW how old are you?

Right, and Apple offering a $1k display with USB 2.0 speeds in 2016 is ok as long as it looks "pretty".

Not sure why you think it is USB2 speeds, but see my post here (quote below) where I get about 4X USB2 speeds with an attached SSD.

One surprising test I did though. I have a Samsung EVO 850 SSD in this Inatech USB3 enclosure I use for CCC clones. With the drive attached directly to the MBP, using Blackmagic, I get 390W/400R. The same test with the drive attached to a USB-C port on the LG I get 240W/320R. So the predictions that the TB3 bus would be saturated and drop these ports to USB2 speeds were incorrect. It is a little slower than the direct connection to the MacBook, but around 4X faster than the theoretical 60MBps speeds of USB2.

I'm referring to Apple's TB display (discontinued). People love to harp on LG's display because of the "ugly black plastic", but are ok with Apple shipping a similarly priced display with USB 2.0 speeds just because it had an aluminum enclosure.

I prefer to own 1 machine that's portable and dock at a desk when I need to get work done. For example I can dock my MBP at work or at my home office. When I dock my laptop, I run it closed and have a separate mouse/keyboard and run it like a desktop.

When I'm traveling (or chilling on the couch), I leave my mouse/keyboard behind and use it as a laptop with it's built in screen, keyboard, and trackpad.

Not sure why you think it is USB2 speeds, but see my post here (quote below) where I get about 4X USB2 speeds with an attached SSD.

I'm wondering if the monitor is to somehow dynamically divide up the leftover bandwidth.

The discount on the monitors and USB-C to Apple proprietary ports is nice but I don't get why anybody would buy an industry standard USB-C from Apple. I'm assuming that even with their discount they are overpriced.

Ahhh... gotcha. I misunderstood your comment.

I'm wondering if the monitor is to somehow dynamically divide up the leftover bandwidth.

I'm thinking the same thing because before the display came out many were adding up the bandwidth required for the video and assumed there would only be enough leftover for USB2, but that is not the case.
