I'm assuming sarcasm here, but just to be clear:

There's almost no (no?) end-user hardware to display 8k.

A 8K desktop monitor would be superfluous because 5K is already too dense for eyes to resolve individual pixels on a 27" display, about the largest desirable desktop monitor size.

Someone close to me has an 8K RED and we both know it's primarily useful as an interstitial format in media production or for commercial projection, but I don't see how it's that valuable as a resolution for consumer hardware. There aren't even any standard cable protocols for 8k signals that I know of: DisplayPort 1.3 can't even handle 5k@60Hz@30bpp in one stream and DP 1.4 doesn't boost the max bandwidth per stream.

...not really, I have the 4k Ultrafine and I can see dead/hot/stuck pixels sitting at about 3.5' away. Anyhow, always someone to defend other's logic lol. Speak for yourself. Another pitfall of the ultra fines is the uneven backlighting/hues/colors on white background while using productivity software, reading articles, etc.

Probably the wrong place to ask, but can this display also be used with Windows machines?

I just got in a new Windows 10 Dell Latitude 7480 laptop with Thunderbolt 3 to evaluate at work. Made sure all of the drivers on the system are the latest. Plugged in the Thunderbolt 3 cable from my LG 5K display and nothing. I figured it would not work but had to give it a shot.

Because that would cost at least another $500 and there is no way to drive 5K video to it from your laptop.o_O

The point is the iMac is probably a more powerful machine than the MacBook Pro, so why not have a MacBook and a dedicated desktop? No connectivity issues or a dock to purchase either.

In any case $1300 for this LG is laughable considering its reputation.

It's so ridiculous to increase the price of 6 month old products. This is proof that Apple's prices are artificially high. They're basically admitting that they screw with their customers.

The discount on the monitors and USB-C to Apple proprietary ports is nice but I don't get why anybody would buy an industry standard USB-C from Apple. I'm assuming that even with their discount they are overpriced.

I completely agree. I hope it continues to be a flop and cues Apple in on getting their own branded/designed monitor to market... tired of them cutting corners it seems now a days. I owned both the 4k and 5k (still have the 4k at reduced price, but may not keep it; may get a Lenovo/Dell) and color hues and backlighting were terribly uneven. I had issues with many of them just not working right as well... freezing up the MBP, images becoming pixelated, monitor freezing and not displaying images... just a joke. It was a very frustrating disappointment as I had to exchange multiple times.

You know what, I bought many of the accessories, now I can sell them with a profit..

People complained at all the proprietary connectors Apple used in the past. Now they're embracing an industry standard connector/protocol and granted a 25% discount for nearly 6 months and folks still aren't happy! :p

Don't worry about the Mac, it's doing just fine and I'm confident we'll see some further updates this year. :)
FireWire was technically industry standard and non-proprietary, as were a lot of the other odd connectors they used for a bit then dropped. USB-C will probably eventually catch on but not exactly in the form Apple is selling right now; I'm referring to all the different types of USB-C cables/connectors that have different capabilities. And until then, every sane PC manufacturer is simply including the common USB as well.

Anyway, I was mainly trying to make a King of the Hill "propane and propane accessories" joke, but my stupid 2000ms ping Internet connection wasn't letting me insert the picture. I'm sure Apple will release new Macs, just slowly.

The two 5K's I have work really well.

Yes, as with most tech, they have a couple of niggles (with volume levels and similar), but at their main function of offering an outstanding image clarity, they work very well.

Increasing the price is a bit weird at this point, but they said they were going to do it, so why moan about it. I know many may have wanted to save-up again, after chucking a load of cash at new MBP's, before then buying down the line. But really, that's not Apple's fault – LG set the wholesale pricing, and margins have been temporarily cut by Apple to afford lower pricing.

It's a pity for those that want one but missed out, though, for sure.

I am not even sure what having 2 21.5 4k monitors would feel like. I am not a Realestate snob when it comes to displays. I am a resolution and pixel snob. I want them to be 4k or better so when I am sitting back I get the retina smooth effect.

I'm in the same boat. I've never really been a multiple monitor guy. I have a laptop that serves as one (and mostly handles chats) and then I make heavy use of Spaces on the my main screen. I like having a single quality screen. I don't upscale. I loved 1440p and having it with this sharpness is so nice on my eyes.

I'm not sad about two! Very few tech components last as long as monitors. I get a quality one every 5 - 7 years.

With the news today that Apple will ultimately be back in the 1st party display business, they can take these LG's and the price raises and stuff it..

SUPER happy to hear Apple will have a branded display again. I will be waiting for that unit, no question.

Not for a year though...

I am still weeding out the crummy units from the good ones.

I am going to have to calibrate then to make sure I can bring them into synch color wise. I am not even a color pro user. I just can not stand having screens that do not look like a single slab of glass
