So pretty! It looks like the monitor that comes for free with the economy business class Dell desktop when you have a coupon code. It would look a lot better if they gave it thicker bezels (at least 2 inches) and was colored in pink and green stripes

Almost pulled the trigger on the monitor, but the reviews have been so 'meh' (even after the shielding fix) - that I can't bring myself to do it.

When Apple left the display business, a little part of me died.

Same with me, after reading the reviews I decided it wasn't worth nearly $1K to put up with all the aggravations people have written about. I'm going to hope there will be a version II which will solve all the other problems which haven't been addressed yet.

The panel is made by LG. But there's a lot more to a display than the panel, like the housing, video electronics, power supply, USB, microphone, speakers and webcam pieces. We all saw how LG screwed up the video electronics here.
And the glare! Apple provides the glare, not lg. I run 4k 37" lg displays. They are great, rotate to portrait/landscape. But usb3 isn't pwer4d high enough and no mic/camera. Everything has compromises.

I use this monitor everyday and love it. I have an issue with glare and lighting in my office with ceiling skylights creating an issue but I'm getting that resolved. The screen is really nice, missing out the beauty we are accustomed to with Apple products, but I'm a fan of and highly recommend it!

Well, it's after midnight here in the UK and the LG 5K monitor has indeed jumped to £1179 having been £884 until now. That is consistent with the removal of the 25% discount. The US site is still at the reduced price so if anyone wants one then you better get your order in before midnight in your timezone.

The 4K is now £629 by the way.

I ordered a second 5K that arrived today so I had one for home and the office. I didn't need it, but honestly, it could be a while before a monitor like this is available at the price point and after using one at the office all day, it's amazing how pixelated my old 27" LED Cinema Display looks (not to mention washed out).

I've been using my first (without the shielding fix) since late January. It's not perfect, but the panel itself is—by far—the nicest panel I have ever used. 5K is nice in and of itself, but the color cannot be understated. I actually prefer it to Apple monitors in the sense that I like the black and hey... LG isn't morally opposed to standard VESA mounts or an adjustable stand. (No cable management is a bit of a head scratcher but it's nothing velcro can't fix.)

Also, single cable is just cool. I know it's a little thing, but it's a nice little thing. If you haven't seen/used one in person, you should do it ASAP if you're on the fence. I read a lot of negative reviews and, quite frankly, if you're giving this display 1 star because you don't like the look... you're not someone I should take advice from.

I went with the slighty cheaper 4k units. I also did the exact same thing. I got one for work and was stunned by how goes it looked after I went through a few of them to get it right. Then tonight I said YO/LO and got a 4k and put it at my home office. This unit is almost as good slightly better color slightly worse blacks. They will look good together if I ever leave where I am at. My company is so cheap they do not provide there IT staff with computers. So I rock a MacBook Pro escape with a 4k and glass track pad. I can not complain at all.

I am not even sure what having 2 21.5 4k monitors would feel like. I am not a Realestate snob when it comes to displays. I am a resolution and pixel snob. I want them to be 4k or better so when I am sitting back I get the retina smooth effect.

These monitors are WAAAY overpriced even with the discount. They literally DO NOT have: HDMI, DP, VGA. I would pay maybe $300 for a monitor with such limited connectivity options, if even that.

Nice try, I almost fell for that until I got to "VGA" then I realised you must be joking/trolling. Good one! o_O

I'm assuming sarcasm here, but just to be clear:

There's almost no (no?) end-user hardware to display 8k.

A 8K desktop monitor would be superfluous because 5K is already too dense for eyes to resolve individual pixels on a 27" display, about the largest desirable desktop monitor size.

Someone close to me has an 8K RED and we both know it's primarily useful as an interstitial format in media production or for commercial projection, but I don't see how it's that valuable as a resolution for consumer hardware. There aren't even any standard cable protocols for 8k signals that I know of: DisplayPort 1.3 can't even handle 5k@60Hz@30bpp in one stream and DP 1.4 doesn't boost the max bandwidth per stream.

Dell sells an 8K monitor (280ppi) for those with deep pockets :)

Looks like this report was 100% correct: All the items have now returned to their "original" pricing. I agree with others who have said that the displays were overpriced even with the discount.

This isn't an isolated instance or because of the so-called "Apple Tax", though. Mid-to-high end computer monitors are generally priced quite high across the board. While I realize it's not quite an apples-to-apples comparison, I'm surprised at the value disparity between TVs, which have rapidly come down in price over the last decade while delivering numerous technological improvements, and computer monitors, which have held steady or even gotten more expensive over that same time period while having a slower rate of technological evolution.

You can't compare TVs with computer monitors for all sorts of reasons I won't go into here.

Also, until the LG 5K has some realistic competition, they can charge whatever they like.

Technologically the LG 5K is way ahead of the Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display and yet I managed to get my two LG displays at a lower GBP price. Even now with the discount removed they are comparable in price when you adjust for brexit currency changes.

These displays were exceptional value with the discount and are still a good buy today. As with anything, the cost/benefit ratio depends on the benefits just as much as cost and as a professional developer the benefits are huge. YMMV of course.

The cable discounts are gone as of this morning. Whatever they did with the pricing for those fugly monitors, I figured Apple would continue the cable prices indefinitely, but it was not to be.

Glad I picked up a few more cables before the price increase.

I don't even care about the price, the part that bothers me is that there is literally NO competition for this monitor if you're a Mac user.

Before you say it, just stop. There is NO OTHER 5K display that offers Thunderbolt 3 connection, USB-C ports, AND a built-in camera/mic that works with Apple's FaceTime.

It's not that FaceTime is all that important anymore (since virtually everyone owns an iPhone/iPad or similar)... but with that cost in this day and age, it had better have every bell & whistle available.

Apple has gone from selling Macintoshes to selling USB-C and USB-C accessories.
People complained at all the proprietary connectors Apple used in the past. Now they're embracing an industry standard connector/protocol and granted a 25% discount for nearly 6 months and folks still aren't happy! :p

Don't worry about the Mac, it's doing just fine and I'm confident we'll see some further updates this year. :)

exactly.

Have used the speakers, FaceTime etc with my monitor and has been great. The screen quality is amazing in comparison to the TBD [which I still have], and I personally have had no issues with mine.

In addition, being a designer, I want the best looking monitor on my desk and to be honest couldn't find anything else on the market that actually looks better, is 5K and TB3 etc. Not sure what all these complainers are buying instead - please enlighten me [yes one with a camera, speakers USB C / TB3 and also 5K].

Edit - however this is not defending Apple.... I am still annoyed with them for not having their own monitor.

I am completely serious. They have NOTHING but tb3/usb-c. HDMI and DP are an obvious must-have.
