Its not just him. After 10.9.2 update, mine crashes as well. Steam version, 2011 MBP, 6750M

I'd contact Feral support and we can have a look, we have thousands of users and (so far) a small handful reported instances of problems, it could grow by a few but it is still likely due to a specific setup issue not the game itself. With every OS update a few issues always crop up as the OS update process isn't perfect and sometimes something goes wrong. Usually it's an easy fix for the user once they send over their details and we can see what the issue is.

FYI we have been testing on 10.9.2 with Tomb Raider for months now as the internal benchmark was used a lot to verify OpenGL improvements by Apple. The AMD 6000 series has had a few hundred hours of gameplay in 10.9.2 so we should be able to work out what's wrong with your setup and get you playing pretty quickly.

As an aside the performance should improve in 10.9.2 as there have been some pretty substantial changes to OpenGL.

Tomb Raider not working after 9.2 update, I get an error.

i updated to 10.9.2 and didnt face a problem on my 2011 imac. in fact played a good few hours last night and figure sadly im on the home stretch chasm ziggaurut is listed on ign as the last section :( ive obviously missed out a lot of hidden bits and extra missions coz it says im only 53% but the end is in sight.

cant say specifically i definitely noticed speedup on 10.9.2 but the game is running like butter. weirdly i found when i first played, i judged the speed entirely by the walkthrough, and i turned down the resolution as at higher resolutions i didnt get a high FPS on it, but whether it was the upgrade or just the game being finely tuned, i know that even on the highest resolution it runs pretty smoothly. there is the odd stutter when lots of baddies attacking me but im glad of the pause for breath

fantastic game, have to say its been up there with fallout 3 and far cry 3 for really immersing me in a game, and the graphics are almost definitely the best graphics ive seen on a mac game. good port too, its one of the first games thats steamplay where i havent tried on mac and then played through on windows for a better experience.

Don't worry about the 53% completion, that's completely normal, you will have plenty of time to do everything else after the game ends, enjoy the story.

You know one thing I miss in the Mac version TressFX, I hope it gets implemented in the future, so cool.

Tomb Raider with TressFX and stereoscopic 3D makes all my other games look like crap... LOL... Tomb Raider is a beautiful game... but for me...TressFX is what makes it sexy.

Looks great and even better with 5.1 Surround Sound!

The game runs great on my mac pro 2009 8 core with AMD 5870 which I bought on Steam. For more fun I hooked my 2012 MacBook Pro up to my surround system via mini display port to HDMI with my HD TV. To my surprise I got full surround 5.1 surround sound and the mix is great as crows caw from the rears etc. It looks awesome on my 50 inch though I can play at higher graphic settings when I play on the mac pro. Finally games are able to output true surround sound our of a mac. Bioshock Infinite also does surround, which is the first game I think I had true 5.1 on a mac.
One thing great about Steam is being able to go back and forth between the two computers pickup where I left off.
Really a great game experience overall. :)

I was waiting this update because I read that the performance will improve, but i get exactly the same fps on my 15 MBP with nvidia 750m ( 22.7 average on 9.1 vs 22.8 on 9.2) with default settings and v-sync off. Is this normal?

Thanks!

I also get the same fps after the update. My late 2013 iMac (780M), Tomb Raider runs at avarage 28fps on high, while I get the same 28fps on Ultra + TressFX on bootcamp (both 1440p).

Nope BioShock Infinite is a late comer to the party, almost all games from Feral in the last year years (and some longer than that) have full surround sound if you have the correct hardware.

A few feral games (but both the entire list) that can use surround sound are:

Batman Arkham Asylum
Batman Arkham City
Bioshock 2
Borderlands 1
F1 2012
F1 2013
Dirt 2
GRID
LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7
LEGO Batman 2
LEGO Lord of The Rings
Lord Of the Rings - War In The North
Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing
Sega Tennis
Total War: Rome
Total War: Empire
Total War: Napoleon

Aspyr also have a number of titles that support 5.1 based on forum posts, (I know Prey & Borderlands 2 have support but I don't have a list.

Edwin, that is very interesting.
Out of that list, I have Arkham City, F1 2012 (soon, F1 2013!) and GRID and I don't get surround sound in any of them.
I have a Creative 5700 receiver with DD5.1 and dts, and get full channel surround sound in Windows games and when playing DVDs. I am using an optical cable from my iMac.
I have never got surround sound from a Mac game. What do I need to do to get this to work?

Here is a link to how to get surround sound to work on Mac's due to how sounds works on the Mac you have to set things up "just so"

Thanks Edwin, so optical cables won't work in Mac games. They work fine with DVDs in OS X and Windows games though, why not in Mac games?

Optical cables only support 2 LPCM channels and pre-rendered Dolby Digital or DTS sound passthrough and at the moment there's no real time encoders for that in OS X.

My receiver doesn't have HDMI input, so is my only option to buy a new receiver and get a mini-display to HDMI lead?
Can you recommend, or have you used, a good cheapish receiver that would do the job?

I would ask SmokeTesu on the other thread, he is a massive 3D sound gamer and has experience with all Mac games and 3D and would be able to suggest different options.

He's a great person and should be abel to give a few suggestions. There are also a few threads on IMG about surround sound hardware if you have a look.

From 4PM to 6PM GMT (starting in the next few mins), Feral’s seasoned fighters (… we insist) will play multiplayer Tomb Raider on Steam.*Go to Multiplayer -> Quick Match to fight us on your Mac.
You’ll know us because our names will have the word FERAL in them.
Most of the top ten in the Tomb Raider multiplayer leaderboard will be there.
Are you going to try to survive us?

I seem to be having a lot of frame rate issues with this game. I'm on an early 2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina with 16 GB RAM, 2.7 GHZ Quad Core and the GT 650M with 1GB VRAM.

I can't run the game on the default settings without the frame rate being really choppy (almost slideshow) specifically in the Mountain Village, Village Overlook, and the Shanty Town.

Even if I turn all settings down to normal/medium I still get a lot of stuttering. This would be fine, but I hear everyone else say that their game runs as smooth as butter and so I begin to wonder if it's my computer at fault. All my other games run fine but admittedly TR is probably the most demanding of the bunch.

Sounds like your Mac's setup as we have loads of people playing on that setup (including me) with no issues. When you say default settings you include resolution on that?

The 650M retina only has 1GB of VRAM so cannot run retina resolution (unlike the newer 750M rMBP with 2GB of VRAM than can run Retina res).

I believe the default resolution for the 650M rMBP in Tomb Raider is 1600x900. The default settings on the Retina are pretty much maxed out at that resolution. Make sure you have 10.9.1 or preferably 10.9.2 as that has a lot of OS improvements for Nvidia cards.

I've got it set to 1600 x 900 with the settings set to the 'Normal' preset and I'm getting low frame rates in most outdoor environments. The cave section at the beginning is okay but once you get to the part where you have to climb up the collapsed plane, the frame rates drop. It's hard to say exactly what frame rate it dips to, but judging by my eyes it's down into the teens.

On mine, when I set the settings to default, the resolution is set one up from 1600 x 900, textures and shadow resolution on high with everything else at 'normal' and high precision off. I've found that to be a bit optimistic and I have had to turn down shadow resolution and textures to medium otherwise it can be really slow.

Among other strange occurrences I also have a major graphics glitch when I revisit the 'Village Overlook' in fast travel. Note: This is only if I revisit the location in Fast Travel after the plane crash has occurred in the game campaign. It appears as though a certain graphic is being stretched across the whole screen.

Foliage also flickers from normal to black a lot, though I find I've been able to ignore that issue. I've kept meaning to raise a ticket to Feral Support about the issues, but with the frame rate problem in particular, I wondered if that was normal and I just had very high expectations.

EDIT: I am running Mac OS X 10.9.2. I did notice some minor improvements when installing 9.2 but overall the issues are all still present.

I do have other Mac games including some by Feral that all work fine. E.g. I have Tomb Raider underworld which I run at maxed out settings, and also Borderlands 2 which I too run at maxed out settings.

It definitely seems to be an issue with your Mac the fps should never really dip below mid 20's worst case and on min settings it will always be much higher. Anything lower fps points to an issue with your OS installation or hardware. If you don't want to reinstall you can go to the pre game Options advanced tab and "enable LegacyGL" mode. This will use a different driver path and might get round the issues you are seeing while avoiding a reinstall. Your graphics will be slightly less impressive but should run faster.

As for the graphics issue that is a cross platform driver issue that happens when you return to the area and can be seen on Windows as well in similar circumstances. If it gets fixed on Windows then we can look to fix it on the Mac too.

I've used LegacyGL mode in the past and it's improved FPS in areas where the FPS is usually high (it's made it even higher) but worsened it in areas where the FPS is usually low. I'll have to try reinstalling the game and then maybe reinstall the OS, but everything else is working fine on my system so I'll have to weigh up wether I can put up with the frame rate issues or not for the meantime.

Glad to know the graphics error isn't exclusive to my machine though, it's pretty scary.

Thanks for the help. :)

LegacyGL acts like you describe, it's faster in the basic areas (as CoreGL is newer and less optimised in some areas right now) but when the complexity of the scene ramps up the use of the new CoreGL features lowers the load and allows for better fps.
