I removed the game and deleted all the game files including my saved games. When I reinstalled it, the game seemed to run great and I could turn settings up higher than I ever had done before, but then after half an hour or so, the laggy frame rates cropped their head up again. I thought it could be a temperature issue so I shut the computer down for a while. When I started Tomb Raider up again though, the laggy frame rates were still there. I'm unsure where to go from here so I've decided to uninstall the game completely from my MacBook Pro and play it on my (lower specced) iMac. It's a shame because the MacBook Pro runs rings around the iMac most of the time, but Tomb Raider seems to temperamental on mine. I would reinstall the whole system but it's too much hassle to go through especially considering everything else is working fine.

Sounds definitely like something on your MacBookPro :( I have played through the game multiple times on max settings without a single issue (and my Mac is the same model as yours) and I know from the stats many other have too.

We haven't seen even one other rMBP with the issue you report and the rMBP is a popular machine for Tomb Raider. I will keep an eye out for others reporting the problem, if anything crops up that points to a cause I'll let you know.

Thanks for your help, it's been way more than I expected when I initially posted the issue. :) Like you say, it must be something on my system. I haven't a clue what it could be, would it be worth making another user account and seeing how it performs there do you think?

Worth a shot that sometimes fixes issues.

I just got my new Mac Pro yesterday.

Here's the Tomb Raider in-game benchmark at the same settings I ran against my old 2010 MP with GTX 660

Note: Only a single graphics card is being used.

FPS increase using Legacy OpenCL

Recently migrated to OS X 10.9.2 so now able to play try TR2013 (Steam) on MP3.1. There's a big difference in FPS using the Legacy OpenCL on my system. Still prefer the DirectX version of this as it's graphics are much more detailed.

YouTube: video

Interesting. Based on the video, the primary thing I noticed between the two setting were more dirt and detail on Laura and more water effects.

I'm amazed with motion capture how good human animation has gotten to include chest heaving and shoulders moving to signify breathing. I wonder when (if not all ready) they will be able to program all of this into a computer that can use the motion to extrapolate and apply it for future projects? My impression is that all animations like this require motion actors to record the movements for animating each project.

BTW what's your OS X program for capturing the video?

Cheers

Good ole Screenflow. It's really the only one that produces decent video and doesn't mangle your FPS.
There still is some performance loss, but nothing major.

Perosnally unless you MUST have AA ,in this case FXAA you can easily play the game maxed out on even a 2012 iMac with GTX680m. FXAA has a habit of dulling textures and colours, and removing it does give a little FPS boost.

You're correct, they do all need motion a capture, and actors. CD Project RED recently showcased it all for the Witcher 3, and how they needed a sword specialist to devise and do combat to capture it for the game.

Fascinating stuff, and things are really getting better.

LegacyGL is faster with older GL calls as Apple improves CoreGL this will reduce without TR needing patches as it is the OS libraries that the performance delta is mostly coming from as the CoreGL library is newer on the Mac. However in complex areas the game runs a LOT faster (like 2x to 3x) on CoreGL compared to Legacy due to new features like geometry shaders that are only in CoreGL.

In terms of graphics quality the Mac (OpenGL) and PC (DirectX) will look identical apart from TressFX (Hair) and some animations with Tessellation (however you will really need to look closely to see them).

Tomb Raider was awesome and you did a great job porting it to OS X. It may be too early to ask but will you port the sequel "Rise of the Tomb Raider", too? :)

Thanks for asking, your suggestion has been added to the "Feral Suggestion System™"

YES, add another one in the Suggestion system :D i want to preorder it...

If the sequel runs as well on the same hardware (I played on an i7 2013 Air) then count me as a definite... not that my little vote matters... just really want to see this ported!

Edit: Just noticed it's due for "Holiday 2015" - guessing it won't run on the same hardware!

MacBook Air doesn't have a large amount of gaming power so any so called "next gen" games from next year will likely struggle. But as always it will be likely decided on a game by game basis. Some games scale better than others.

Just OC my 7950 Mac Edition card to 1075/1400MHz, the performance now is actually a little better than what I expect.

I'm running this on a late 2013 rMBP, 2.4 i5, 8gb ram.
I'm getting an average frame rate of ~15.
I turned v-sync off. What other changes should I make? The game is pretty playable now but gets choppy in combat.

Lower the resolution, settings, turn off any unnecessary filter, etc.

Sorry, I'm new to this. Are there specific filters that will give the most performance benefit? I can figure out turning down the resolution.
