How can they 'bundle' the app? I thought you had to buy apps, and 'coupon codes' are limited to 50 per release (or something like that)? I may be wrong, but I was unaware of a way to distribute apps without going through the app store. Maybe an in app code?

Well, one way would be to do it the opposite way: provide a coupon for the HW addon with proof-of-purchase of the App.

Hope the TomTom car kit integration is on OS level so when you connect to it the GPS in the kit is activated and internal GPS is disabled. If this is how it works then it would explain the third party compatibility. It would be interesting opportunity to use Navigon app with TomTom car kit.

Anyway, I'm afraid the car kit will be way overpriced...

No need to be like that. Some people are in the situation where upgrading to a 3G/3GS would be too expensive. I never entered into an official O2 iPhone contract with mine, so to replace it with a 3G would cost around £350, which I don't have spare at the moment.

The 2G has no GPS chip.

When thinking about the term "overpriced," you need to look at the competition. I had been using a Belkin Auto Kit that cost me around $60 with my 3G and 5G iPods. Unfortunately, because of the way that Apple reconfigured the dock connector, it won't charge any of the new iPods or iPhones. I was considering replacing it with another Belkin - the TuneBase Direct or the TuneFlex. The former is similar to the TomTom offering, but doesn't have a GPS antenna and appears to use the headphone port rather than the dock for a line out (except I see what looks like a line out port on the side of the plug, so I'm not sure).

It's $70.

Don't be surprised if it retails for $100/$70. I certainly think that would be a fair price in comparison, and would tempt me to go with a straight TomTom solution rather than Navigon/TomTom.

I have Navigon Europe+America so I would very much like to hear that TomTom's car kit works with Navigon's software. If it would be priced on par with other car kits, I would buy TomTom's instead.

meh. This mount is cheap and works with all other GPS apps... :D

Maybe this means the ipod touch will get gps next month!
What a lot of us are hoping is that the iPod touch 1st generation and 2nd generation will be able to use the TomTom dock, regardless of whether or not the upcoming 3rd generation iPod touch has GPS. I suspect that TomTom disables the GPS chip in the phone, and is using the chip in the cradle when it's connected. If that's the case, then the cradle should have no problem supporting the original iPhone, and iPod touch 1st and 2nd generation.

Keeping my fingers crossed for my 2nd generation iPod touch!

I was one of the ones they "retweeted" about the date, but they refuse to answer my question about whether or not phones with cases will fit into the car kit.

Probably because the answer would be a rather obvious, "It depends on the case." Seriously, which one of over a hundred different cases are you asking about?

How would you be able to use this on the road with iPod Touch? Don't you need mobile internet and not just WI-FI? WI-FI isn't available everywhere on the move. I don't have an iPod Touch but I have an iPhone. I understand to have this for the iPhone but for iPod Touch, I don't know because the whole internet thing but if you get around that then yea thats pretty cool.

And why do you think you would need mobile internet for, if I may ask?

since it downloads all the maps locally, you just put in your starting location and it calculates from there. and real time updates are a best guess.

Hype

What's the point of paying over a hundred bucks for the software and adapter? Just buy a "real" GPS navigation unit for the car.

It will work with the kit because the kit has a GPS chip in it I don't think that it will work otherwise.

*see post above

This is convinience to have it built into your phone. You always have your phone on you anyway, so it's a nice convinience to just be able to whip out your iPhone and use the GPS (especially if you are traveling in a rental car/walking/friend's car, etc. etc.) No one wants to carry around a bulky GPS unit with them everywhere.

If the car kit does end up being $70 with some sort of a discount on the App, then I'm all for it. (even if it's just $70 with the App being $99 is fine with me) as long as the App works correctly.

As an owner of a Garmin, I am amazed at how hot the GPS gets. NO WAY I'm going to put "the precious" up into a blazing-hot window to fry. I'll stick with a dedicated $150 unit that can be replaced in a blink with no trouble. If TomTom will do a Pedistrian version, that might be something I'd invest in sometime (perhaps on our next trip to NYC.)

Ok I see now, now that I see it that way yea I think this is pretty cool, especially a busy business man who has to lug alot of things to and from work everyday and he could park in the parking lot and just grab his phone or ipod and doesnt have to worry about getting his GPS stolen when he parks :)

Not so cool!

Why this company neglecting american consumers. It takes awhile before they bring the product to us. Look what happened to the japanese companies americans don't want them anymore. What makes Apple so successful is because this is the only company that bring new technology to american consumer first. Same thing with Nokia we don't want them anymore who wants N97 anyone? This is what happened if you don't prioritize us because we americans deserves it first more than anybody else in this world!

That might be easier than it sounds. I'm guesing the internal GPS isn't disabled but rather the app must select which GPS it uses. The manual for the iphone app has been posted at

http://download.tomtom.com/open/manuals/app_for_iphone/refman/TomTom-app-en-US.pdf

The manual show how to place the iPhone into the TomTom car kit (iPhone mount) and more interestingly how to pair the mount with the iPhone. It even states to use the car kit, you need to establish a Bluetooth connection and shows how to do it. Now my question is the mount just using handsfree profile or is the mount a GPS enabled bluetooth receiver ???

Why this company neglecting american consumers.
Perhaps because America is not the only country on the planet.

On the Japanese companies neglecting American consumers and selling to Japanese consumers, is maybe because Japan is their home market????

Gawd some American's eh, thinking they should get everything first:mad::eek::rolleyes::D

Damnit I want that mount but I have the Navigon app. Maybe I can attempt to get a refund, but then at the same time I don't want to effn pay $100 for the TomTom app. God damnit.
