Redundant waste of money.

I can go to Buy.com and get a TomTom 125 for under $100 shipped loaded with US maps. Why buy the App and then the kit to have my iPhone tied up? Sorry...not for me.

I'd buy the mount just so I could have a place for my ipod functions.

While a dedicated unit is better, having the app as well is useful - e.g. if you find yourself in somebody else's car without your dedicated unit.

Extremely over priced! That is ridiculous! After the initial costs and a months fee you can just buy a GPS for your car, probably a much better one too.

...and if it doesn't have WAAS it's worthless. Not sure if it's WAAS enabled or not.

There is no monthly fees. However, the total cost (app+kit) is just a rip off. TT app is as basic as GPS navigator can be. I mean even the original TT Go had more features then the just released TT for iPhone app.

Regarding WAAS its useless in car navigation. It doesn't really give you any advantage. Trust me I have had car GPS with WAAS (Nüvi 660) and it really didn't make any difference.

There will be monthly fees for the "Live" service and obviously map updates after the first few months.

Trust me, the live services like HD traffic won't EVER be available on iPhone. TT will leave that stuff on dedicated stand alone top of the range devices. Take a reality check, TT on iPhone doesn't even have lane guidance (which even TT one has) so having "Live" is beyond a stretch. TT for iPhone is just basic navigator and there is nothing that will make it state of the art. If you want "Live" then get a high end TT. Regarding map updates there even isn't a paid upgrade feature on app store so speculating about paid upgrades is bit early. Don't even start with in app purchases. Maps are around 1.4 GB so don't even think you could download something like that in-app.

Here's an important note about the TomTom carkit:

You can only install the TomTom cradle on your dashboard once, because you need to install an adhesive mounting disk on your dashboard – the one were you'll put the suction cup on.

"Remove and discard the plastic film from the adhesive layer and place the disk on your dashboard."

I personally don't want anything on my cars' windshield and neither on my leather dashboard. I'm so glad to have one built-in by the manufacturer already. Even my todays rental has in car navigation, and I don't think they would accept me placing anything semi-permanently on their dashboard either.

Don't you think that having stuff on your windshield is foolish? I do* but then again that's why I buy Apple gear... because its different and wonderfully designed and engineered.

I also own a Harley and I don't want the cradle anywhere on it. That would just be ridiculous.

Do I like the TomTom application? Yes, I have been testing it a few weeks (Beta tester) and I must say I love it. However, it doesn't compare to a real built-in car navigation set (sorry Ben) – I'll be using it mostly for walking and bicycle routes (just to let other hikers/bikers know it exist).

* I love the special note regarding driving in California and Minnesota and hope that other countries pick this up soon – Germany is probably the first because of an accident there, where a navigation device blocked the drivers road view... missing/overlooking a pedestrian crossing a road.

Why this company neglecting american consumers. It takes awhile before they bring the product to us. Look what happened to the japanese companies americans don't want them anymore. What makes Apple so successful is because this is the only company that bring new technology to american consumer first. Same thing with Nokia we don't want them anymore who wants N97 anyone? This is what happened if you don't prioritize us because we americans deserves it first more than anybody else in this world!

I sincerely hope you are being sarcastic.

This sounds cool. Hope this doesn't turn into an excuse for them raising prices on it though

I would count on this. I am encouraged that TomTom will let other GPS companies use their mount, though.

It's looking like I'll go with Navigon and a TomTom mount.

Well for starters refurbs don't come with the latest map updates nor, as of about a month ago, can you update them without paying TomTom it's upgrade fee (around $99).

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A400 Safari/528.16)

I'm patiently awaiting the car kit. I'd like to buy a bundle of the kit and the app. I'm still debating though because the price seems a little steep.

This may have been asked and answered already but....

If the iPhone 2G doesn't have a GPS chip in the unit itself, if one were to install the TomTom software on said phone and utilize the matching mount would the phone then work like the 3G or the 3GS would?

Sorry if I missed this but ... Does the TT kit work with satellite or through the same comms, i.e. wi-fi / edge/ 3g. I am driving through a mountainous area at the moment and my Garmin can access satellite no problem while our iPhones (3G and a 3Gs) are unable to connect to anything most of the time.

You can't really compare the iPhones, since the 3GS is not only faster, but also includes new features which are not available on other models. However, it works with the 2G be it a bit slower – GPS reception from the cradle will be of the same quality of course.

It works with satellites and the car kit will do an even better job because of the built-in GPS receiver, which is much better than the one in the iPhone.

All they have said is "late Summer". On my U.S. calendar that means before September 22nd when the Autumnal Equinox begins....which I believe is they day of their advertised big shindig!

Steve

I really cannot imagine that TomTom would host a media event to launch an already announced accessory for an already released piece of software. It must be something else or something in addition to the cradle.

If you use this in your car, what's the point? You can buy a Magellan Maestro refurb for under $100. Keep it in your car and use it whenever you need to. I can't see myself walking around with my iPhone listening to TomTom directions to the land of Oz. If you need street directions to a pub or restaurant, you already have these apps for the iPhone. I must be missing something here.

Interesting... I hope this means that the Navigon Western Europe app will be compatible with it as if so I am sold as the TomTom Western Europe app isn't to my liking lol

Navigon did announce a carkit as well. I guess Navigon will try to beat TT again with releasing the carkit. Todays Navigon text-to-speech / ipod control / mail-location update announcement is a pretty teasing style of doing marketing. I guess they'll have another update ready in near future (traffic info, better phone support).

Why does it feel to me TomTom is taking hints from AT&T make big promises but in no way let anyone know when it will happen.

This is certainly good news for us lowly Touch users who are directionally challenged.:p

and us 2G iphone users. Woohoo! I have been scouring craigslist for a 3G since the annoucement of TomTom's app. The only reason I haven't bit the bullet and bought on is bc I kinda prefer Garmin and people think they can charge $450 for a 8gig 3G bc it is unlocked. Please people.

Do you really think those people that charge $20 for unlocking on craigslist actually make money? I guess so. Some of those prices just seem outrageous.

Out of all of this, wether the antenna is included in the car kit or not, I like it bc it will minimize clutter. Plain in simple it elminates something else in the car. It is the main reason I have yet to get one. I don't want another wire running from my dash to my cigarrette lighter only to get in the way.

After it is all said it done, you begin to feel boxed in by all of these gadgets. If my 2G iphone can perform this task bc of an external antenna on the dock/craddle it will be brilliant. My phone will do one more thing for me when I move in 2 weeks. ;)
