Whats the big hype about it? TomTom for iPhone does note even speak.
There is no turn by turn voice. So, why would anyone buy it without voice capabilities.

Stay in the car!

This is convinience to have it built into your phone. You always have your phone on you anyway, so it's a nice convinience to just be able to whip out your iPhone and use the GPS (especially if you are traveling in a rental car/walking/friend's car, etc. etc.) No one wants to carry around a bulky GPS unit with them everywhere.

If the car kit does end up being $70 with some sort of a discount on the App, then I'm all for it. (even if it's just $70 with the App being $99 is fine with me) as long as the App works correctly.

I don't bring my GPS with me it stays in the car. Even if I do rent a car still stays in the car. If you rent a car aren't you bringing the car kit with you? I don't want driving with one hand on my iPhone. Besides the map app is expensive only USA, just buy a TomTom One for $99 that includes USA, Canada and Puerto Rico and a car kit. When you travel keep it in your bag, same thing as bringing the TomTom for iPhone car kit when you plan to rent a car.

Why this company neglecting american consumers. It takes awhile before they bring the product to us. Look what happened to the japanese companies americans don't want them anymore. What makes Apple so successful is because this is the only company that bring new technology to american consumer first. Same thing with Nokia we don't want them anymore who wants N97 anyone? This is what happened if you don't prioritize us because we americans deserves it first more than anybody else in this world!

Get off your high horse. Who the **** do you think you are?

because..... voice turn by turn is the most useless part of a navigation device?

I suppose that depends on your point of view. It's the most important for me, since I'm not going to look at a shiny toy when on a motorcycle, I need to hear where it's telling me to go. This is why if it doesn't actually speak the street names, it's dead to me.

FYI, you're making us Americans look like idiots.

I'm hoping the entire package will be <$100. Not worth it otherwise.

so will this basically turn an original iphone 2G into a 2G with GPS? i wonder if it'll work with google maps

No turn by turn voice?! The manual says "voice instructions" can be switched on and off!! Could anyone confirm if it does have turn by turn voice and if it reads street names?

As an owner of a Garmin, I am amazed at hot the GPS gets. NO WAY, I'm going to put "the precious" up into a blazing-hot window to fry. I'll stick with a dedicated $150 unit that can be replaced in a blink with no trouble. If TomTom will do a Pedistrian version, that might be something I'd invest in sometime (perhaps on our next trip to NYC.)

yes-yes must let nav-navman save the precious from sun stroke…

It absolutely does speak, in a huge choice of different voices, languages and accents. It does not do TTS as far as I can tell so far. Perhaps that is coming in a future release alongside speed camera detection, lane views and traffic updates. Why do people talk so much crap on here? How can you make these huge bold sensationalist statements about an app you have not even tried?

TomTom have always said the dock would have a GPS chip built-in.

Today macrumors (usually full of well-informed and clever individuals) appears to have been invaded by ignorant youtube commenters.

And for the guy stating that America deserves things first, and that is why Apple is so successful - I have never heard so much rubbish. Apple usually releases everything globally, simultaneously, unless some kind of legal reason restricts that. Not only are you making America look bad, you do not even appear to be able to speak English. Either English is not your first language, or you are just an illiterate idiot.

(apologies to everyone this does not apply to)

Well it sounds good.

Still though, the price of the kit and an App is much more than a stand alone GPS with a bigger screen.

What I'm wondering, does the aggreement about "free updates" for Apps cover new maps in the future, or will they need to be bought in-app as they come avaliable.

I suppose this means it's going to be pricey since it's a companion piece in general to other nav apps and not just a TomTom booster. Be interesting to see how this works.

Well, one way would be to do it the opposite way: provide a coupon for the HW addon with proof-of-purchase of the App.

Or maybe after you buy the app and the craddle is available you could problably buy it with in app purchases that way who ever has the app the app will show you when it's available right

Are we getting crazy?

Excuse me, but am I the only one thinking that this is getting psycodelic? I understand the "all in one" concept of the iPhone, but ... paying some hundred euros/dollars for the device, and having to pay another bunch for an app that doesn´t make more that the device you can purchase for less money, and using a cradle that disconnects the "on board" GPS . . . sounds a litlle forced to me.

You dont have to buy it, I think its a great idea to allow touch users to have gps as well, brilliant marketing wise.

ahhh... shut up.

hahaha

Extremely over priced! That is ridiculous! After the initial costs and a months fee you can just buy a GPS for your car, probably a much better one too.

...and if it doesn't have WAAS it's worthless. Not sure if it's WAAS enabled or not.
