The takeover was finally approved by the European Commission in 2008, and the final price was 2.9 billion euros after the price was pushed up by rival bids from Garmin.
Man, some people here are darn quick: I was looking for the right numbers in the TomTom press corner, but I was unable to locate it before your insightful post. Thanks.

You need to sell a hell of a lot of hardware and software to make that back!
Absolutely! That's why I mentioned the acquisition.

I wish that all "why would I ever buy this" people would just leave already. No one gives a **** about your "I am smarter than you" opinion.

honestly.. google maps is enough for me
I love google maps, especially for public transit and walking, but if you can navigate a car point-to-point with it without a co-pilot, you are a better man than I, Gunga Din. (Oh, what the hell, you are probably a better man than I in any case.)

Around here (Washington DC area), if you leave your GPS in your car mounted to your windshield, there is about a 99% chance that somebody will break into your car and steal it.

They may steal it if there is a mount on the windshield, or the indication of a suction cup mount!

Also: do you think with the additional tomtom gps mount, that this app would work with the original first generation iphone? This will be just speculation until the mount is actually released....

Text-to-Speech

I cannot understand why TomTom has not included this in their list of features. They use an S in the product number to feature it in their hardware, introduced it in the top of the line down, and charge a premium for it. We have to wait for someone to try it to find out.

Bought iGo My Way yesterday ... and based on the TT screenshots I'm glad I did. IGo has been excellent thus far and the UI appears to be superior to this.

I don't see any lane assist in TT at all. Maybe some one can confirm? Not sure whether Tele-Atlas provides that or not. Obviously Navteq does.

From someone who hasn't chosen a gps app yet, at first blush, it seems like Navigon has a better product. Both seem to have the same features but Navigon has a better UI.

Hhhmmm expensive but I will def consider it, would like to go on a trip around the EU later on next year so this along with iPhone + car kit could be very good :D

Although I like the look of the Navigon but yet to really look into it deeply, IDK I guess I'll wait for a review between them (if there ever is one).

In that case i'm sold, it will be the only app in the apps store to feature text-to-speech. What voices are available (english)?

Slight correction: it's the THIRD GPS app to boast TTS. AT&T Navigator/Telenav and Gokivo were the first two.

True but both of those apps are 'streamed' they are not hosted locally. If you drive to an area with limited cell phone service, you'll be out of luck.

I'm on the fence on this at the minute, I love TomTom's products but there's still some things that remain to be seen before I can say yes on it.

The Car Kit price, hardly essential for me, but something that does pull me towards them.

If they do a United Kingdom product as they do for their all in one units at a lower price, that would pull me in - I suspect we'll not see that till it hits the UK store. Could be a deal breaker.

And being honest? I want to see a review or two first anyway, I'm sure somewhere will have side by side comparissons going.

Navigon is missing a critical feature....TTS.

Is MR obsessed with GPS apps or something? Seems like every time I check the main page, there's something about a new GPS app. I know it's good and all, but jeez.

You'll have to pay another $99 or so to update the maps on that thing

Crap. They come with a year of updated maps (ours did) - and it's got plenty of capacity - infact, for £30 we added the Western USA to ours - and it's still got room for every supermarket, petrol station, museum, airport etc etc etc.

And it cost £79.

does anyone know what time we should get it in the uk?

As we have been waiting for this app all summer long now it's here any idea when we can start downloading it in the uk. any ideas when the cradle will be available?

Tomtom is differentiating this app because it's the only iPhone app so far that runs IQroutes. It compares to a Tomtom ONE IQROUTES/140, which rarely sells for under $150.

IQroutes uses historical time-of-day and day-of-week specific road speeds form millions of Tomtom owners, and gives much better urban directions than any other brand because IQroutes can avoid predictable congestion.

The routing would be much better than the soon-to-be discontinued Tomtom 130 (which doesn't contain IQroutes), so price-comparing the iPhone app to a 130 wouldn't be apples-to-apples.

Tomtom said in their financial call that a US/Europe launch would be simultaneous. My assumption is that is true for the full global launch. They're probably waiting for each timezone's "Monday" so that they have their support call centers open, but my guess is that it should make it across the globe within 12-18 hours.

IDK some time after 12am when it is Monday...

Ah...didn't know you meant strictly the pre-loaded GPS apps (Navigon, Sygic, G-Map, etc.).

And to ProwlingTiger: to answer your question: yes, we MR folks are very obsessed with our GPS apps. :D

(My theory is that iPhone users have been deprived of this technology for so long that now that we have it...well you get the picture...)

If this turns out to work as advertised with the handsfree calling, I will probably get this. Before I tried it, I, too, thought the Tomtom UI and map layout looked garish and ugly.

My sentiment after having used Tomtom GPS units for a couple of years is that the not-so-pretty color scheme and chunky glyphs increases readability to the point that you get the information you need after a quick glance at the unit. This is certainly a good thing on the road. For me, the "prettier" and more subdued map visualizations and shaded icons on other devices hurts clarity. YMMV, of course.

As for the full package, it's definitely not cheap, but it does sound like an altogether handy combo with the handsfree/car charger/music player functionality. Now, if only they could make one in ivory with embedded Swarowski crystals and platinum connectors...
