Hmm and I just bought CoPilot 12 hours ago lol

It seems like TTS is the only upper hand of this app? Hopefully the North American version will be released soon.

Tomtom is differentiating this app because it's the only iPhone app so far that runs IQroutes. It compares to a Tomtom ONE IQROUTES/140, which rarely sells for under $150.

IQroutes uses historical time-of-day and day-of-week specific road speeds form millions of Tomtom owners, and gives much better urban directions than any other brand because IQroutes can avoid predictable congestion.

The routing would be much better than the soon-to-be discontinued Tomtom 130 (which doesn't contain IQroutes), so price-comparing the iPhone app to a 130 wouldn't be apples-to-apples.

Tomtom said in their financial call that a US/Europe launch would be simultaneous. My assumption is that is true for the full global launch. They're probably waiting for each timezone's "Monday" so that they have their support call centers open, but my guess is that it should make it across the globe within 12-18 hours.

Interesting. I'll wait to see in-depth reviews and comparisons of this app and others (I'm looking at you Macworld) to see which one I choose.

I've never used a GPS before. Does IQroutes make that much of a real world difference? Is this and native text to speech the only differences with Navigon?

Lane Assist

That Navigon picture (below) seems to be of a lane assist--if so, it isn't how the map normally looks, that's just a still image previewing a specific intersection. I have it on Garmin and don't really like it--it's distracting and a time when I don't really need to be distracted (ie approaching a complex interchange!)

So... that's a lane assist image not a snapshot of an active scrolling map--if it were I'd hate it, I like to get my 3D views out the window! The GPS is for reference only, the beauty should come from the real world!

TomTom looks just fine to me!

What ?!?! No 3D !!! :mad::mad::mad:

Look at Navigon:

Thank goodness Apple is entering the GPS market, so there will be user-friendliness built in.

My TomTom Go has repeatedly nuked my saved destinations every time I download and instal a new map. Up to the latest map it was possible to reinstal them by removing the mapsettings.cfg file before updating and replacing it on the TomTom when you'd updated - but the latest map won't even recognise the old mapsettings.cfg file, which has killed a bunch of saved destinations in remote places and (shudder) business parks.

I know I can trust Apple not to allow such an incredibly insulting bug in its software. I'll definitely be buying this as soon as the Irish map appears.

Slight correction: it's the THIRD GPS app to boast TTS. AT&T Navigator/Telenav and Gokivo were the first two.
I am using AT&T. It does have TTS. However, I have to use a head-set to be able to understand it. I could route it thru my car-stereo but then I cannot listen to Sirius.

I expect to have the same problem with TomTom. I think that may be why TT is offering the car-kit.

looks as though TTS is THE feature that we're all waiting for. i'm assuming that it will eventually come to all the various GPS apps...and then it will be a matter of personal preference (UI, aesthetics, etc.) that will cause one to choose one over another. price will say a lot, too.

The poor vocal volume and clarity are things that I've repeatedly brought up to the Telenav team, so I do know they're aware of it. I hope it gets fixed in the next update.

I really like the Tom Tom app from what I have seen/read but no way I can justify the $100 tag, at $30 I would buy it in a heartbeat

Ahhh.. now I can't wait for CoPilot to have their own TTS too ;)
I love CoPilot's UI over TomTom's based on the screenshots.

I like the CoPilot UI too, but it takes up to 5 minutes to get a GPS fix when I launch the app, it can't keep up with the car, it sends me on weird routes, and it places my home about half a mile away from where it actually is.

It's good to have a nice UI, but it's pointless if the app doesn't actually work.

I know it does seem to work for some people. Perhaps I'm just unlucky and the maps just don't happen to be very good in my locality?

So since it looks like they're launching it country by country (atleast I think, people shouldn't make that prediction with just 2 so far)

any clue what the September 27th event could be about?

A lot of moaning about the UI.

I do a lot of driving for work and I have found Tomtom's IQ Routes to much better results than any other GPS when it comes to routing. I gave Copilot a go the other day and the route it chose was about 10 minutes longer than Tomtom. It also did the annoying thing of asking me to make a u-turn because I chose to ignore its instructions. It also tried sending me up at least 3 small tracks on the way home.

You can keep your fancy graphics. I just want something that I can rely on to get me from A to B.

That's the whole point. Turn-by-turn GPS apps MUST provide their own map tiles. If you have a 3G or 3GS it will work anywhere, regardless of whether you have mobile connectivity available or not.

A$99.99 (which is what it probably will be) is WAAAYY cheaper than a stand-alone unit.

My GPS works anywhere no roaming charges and stays in the car. You forgot to mention $99(iPhone)+$169(TomTom) for the package including hardware and software. If you buy the Tom Tom One it's only $99 with USA and Canada maps included. These maps being sold on app store should be no more than $50 anything above that price is a rip-off.

NZ & Aus pricing

together cost nearly twice as much as US + Canada - not sure what is going on here - is this some kind of "can't drive there" logic?

I am hoping for another datapoint around 6pm, Holland, or 7pm, UK. Anyone staying up? I am old and I drink. I have to take a nap or I will not make it.

Try my tips and see if that helps.

Back to TomTom, I really don't get why they would say the car kit will be available the same time with the app, yet it isn't. Oh joy...
I wonder how good this app is, especially since a lot of the people here at US already bought the first released TBT apps.
