They (TomTom) do give frequent updates, however it’s my opinion (and others from reading App Store reviews) that they need to get the basics right. Ever since the TomTom Go app was released, there is a noticeable lag between where you are, and where the app thinks you are. No such lag was present in the original TomTom app. Although the lag isn’t great, it is large enough that when driving through built up areas and around roundabouts (something that is no where near as common in the US compared to the UK), it’s sooo easy to miss a turn/ junction.

Does this version, on CarPlay, allow speed camera warnings? Is it part of the subscription and updates often?

Also does it warn on speed cameras when no route planned but just driving along?

I'm after a CarPlay enabled Sat Nav that has this and if TomTom does would be willing to pay a subscription.

Thanks

Here WeGo and Sygic offer free offline mode with selective maps.

By the way, those of you who have older iPhone devices that are not on any cellular plans, connect it to your wifi, install a free offline gps apps and download maps for your area.
Then place the iPhone in the car and type in destination address and press start navigation, and the device will ping the cellular towers to get free gps triangulation even though it says no service and begin your drive.
And besides that you can still dial 911 on these devices for emergencies.
Enjoy!
[doublepost=1560270761][/doublepost]Waze does offer offline navigation as long as you start your drive with either cellular data or wifi data and don't veer off the route.

Used this trick for years in Europe when data was exorbitantly expensive. Now that it's only mildly expensive I've stopped. But this trick works really well.

And yeah - funny how many commenters don't realize that several features they tout about TomTom have been available in the free options for a while now...

Gave it a try. You basically can’t navigate anywhere without touching your phone. No Keyboard, no microphone button for address searches. If I have to touch my phone what’s the point? It’s too bad because their lane guidance looks awesome.

No thank you. Won’t be giving the company another penny. I paid £69.99 for the original TomTom app and bought their £129 car dock for them to ditch the app and launch a different app with a subscription model.

I use Waze everyday and love it. Super accurate and free.

I have a trick for beating those pesky speed cameras and it works every time. Don’t speed.

I used to love Copilot but they don’t update much like carplay

I wanted to keep using CoPilot with CarPlay, but every time it gives a voice direction the audio input switches from radio/xm radio/whatever I'm listening to over to CarPlay and starts playing from my local iTunes library. I filed a bug report Saturday asking for them to call their audio updates differently not to do this (and reminding them that they should really support CarPlay) and just got a lame email today with links to setting up Bluetooth and that they don't support CarPlay. They said not to hesitate with any additional questions, so I'm going to ask them how to export all of my favorite locations so I can import them into Apple Maps and delete their app.

Yes, was a pleasant surprise to see TomTom icon show up on my CarPlay display the other day. TomTom has been my travel navigation app of choice due to its ability to pre-download map data, so no problem in foreign countries when there's no mobile internet available or when deep in a forest where there's no wireless service. Also like the simplistic interface. But yes, its commercial position is rather perilous.

I only like Waze for the police speedtrap alerts, that's literally all I use it for, wish Google maps incorporated police sightings too.

Waze is amazing for UK
Always seems to send me in to traffic rather than away from it, wasn't keen on the route planning generally. Maybe I should persevere more with it.

Yes with regards speed camera alerts, not sure about the when driving with no route planned, will let you know, there aren't many fixed cameras where I live.

i bought the Tom Tom app back when I had iPhone 3. Back then I think i paid about A$80. Still have it and use it as my default navigation app. I find the app layout alot better than any others i have tried. Tom Tom app also shows speed cameras and speed traps, faster routes when driving. i always use it on major trips. i live in Australia

I used Navigon until they folded, and have been looking for a carplay compatible replacement since then. I prefer offline maps, and trust TomTom's extensive experience specializing in the mapping space. I've used waze, google, and apple maps all because they have been the only carplay compatible options, but would not call myself a fan of any of them (the amount of accidents i've almost gotten into with Waze's constantly optimizing directions).

I wish Garmin would reinvest in navigon..It's my belief they folded because they were kept off carplay for so long. Absent them, I'm more than willing to give TomTom a shot.

I used to use NAVIGON myself until it folded.

Been using Sygic now since it has CarPlay available. It’s been pretty decent so far. You should check it out.

Gonna try the free month with Tom Tom as the subscription prices don’t seem too bad.

This. Cannot believe they relaunch the app, give it CarPlay but you CANNOT search for a location using CarPlay. It's madness.

I’ve tested every map out there, and TomTom has come out on top every time. The advantage of keeping the maps on the device allows for better routing in the event of unexpected traffic, missed turns, etc., especially for long drives, by allowing the app itself to do the routing instead of relying on a server to provide a route, which in turn provides faster reroutes. With cellular dead spots still a thing, driving into one of them can effectively cripple navigation for net-based Navi apps. So, very impractical for when relying on these apps and you simply don’t have access to the internet because your in Canada, Europe, whatever and don’t wish to turn roaming. Also, no ads.

I tested Waze in Europe. It sucked. Actually Waze has issues constantly. Half the time I get a “Ooops, could not communicate with routing server” error and navigation just stops mid-way through. This was with perfect cell reception. I had to sit there and wait for Waze to fix itself before it would resume guidance. I should probably be glad there is no place for ads in CarPlay For Waze because so help me I end up at LongHorn instead of a job interview, again, because at some point I accidentally tapped an ad without realizing it.

Google is the only comparable Navi app, but it still had issues TomTom didn’t.

Also personal bias, I think the TomTom maps look better, in general, and run smoother in CarPlay. The only thing I wish TomTom had was Waze’s auto-zoom. That feature of Waze is nice.

Waze allows multiple stops. I do that all the time.
It only allows one stop, or I simply couldn’t figure out how to set multiple without overwriting the destination. TomTom allows as many stops as you need or want.

Personal experience says yes to all of that for TomTom

Admittedly, I do find that to be an issue. TomTom is definitely hurting themselves there.

I honestly haven’t tried that yet. I would imagine that it should work, but don’t take my word for it.
Ok thanks, just seen seems to be a trial so I'll check.

I do like TomTom, if has the speed camera warnings running when no route planned and shows and alerts you I'd be happy to buy the subscription, even though don't use sat Nav that much.

However how TomTom released CarPlay version with search on screen is ridiculous decision really isn't it. It's to encourage leaving your phone and TomTom want you to pick up the phone for address search!?! Who decided this....the last date was so long surely they could have had this from start it's getting bad press because of this

Had a quick trial, haven't found speed camera yet though. Little disappointed in the map view seems so plain to be honest. No buildings shown, limited road names etc.

It does have those, or they may have removed them to make the map sizes smaller, but I have definitely seen them. I like TomTom’s map style the best TBH.

That's a bizarre design decision. It can obviously be done because Google Maps has a microphone button for voice searches. Even my clunky old Garmin GPS unit had voice control capabilities.
