I bought three tomtom apps, UK, USA and Australia. They gave me free subs until July 2020 so fair enough. Yes, they are slow to carplay but coincidentally I got my new car the day after they released the upgrade and my new car has carplay where my older car did not. Small wins.
Waze is great in the USA I have found because drivers seem to spend so much time on thier phone they don't have any problems tapping on warnings etc.
For traffic, Waze is awful compared to tomtom. Many times waze let me into massive jams where tomtom seems to update almost immediately and has saved me many times.
Once my free sub run out I'll renew and pay myself.
Carplay Tomtom has limitations which are apparently limitations that Apple have decided upon to make a standard for sat nav on car play. Hopefully, in not too distant future updates we will see tomtom manage to get past these to make their app even better on car play, it feels very basic at the moment compared to the phone version.
