outdoor gps app

Hi all!

Does anybody know any good gps app for outdoor activities? I've found a software called GPS Tuner on the app store. Does anyone have any experience with this app? I think it has a free "Lite" version too.

I haven't update to iOS 4.2.

Don't update to iOS 4.2...Navigon starts to go bright and dim non-stop in navigation mode.

From Navigon Support: "We're aware of this issue and we apologize for the inconvience! It is being fixed in the next update. In the meantime please ty to set the automatic lock to >2 min. This seems to solve the issue as a workaround."

Did they happen to mention when that update might be coming?

Navigon's Facebook pages from Fans' comments and Navigon's responses in summary:

update fixes, possible new features and/or new maps, by end of December 2010

Hey, is Navigon going to change when they announce what side of hte street your destination is on?

It's nice it eventually tells you. But it's useless cause it tells you what side to look for your destination right when you're passing it. They need to give you some advance warning.

Sales!

Black Friday (one day only) for Navigon per app description:
USA $29.99
MyRegion $19.99

TomTom (for some regions) are on sale now!
(few TomTom app descriptions mentioned Cyber Monday Special).

TomTom doesn't tell you ever, and it annoys me.

That's only slightly worse honestly. I mean what good does it do you when it tells you when either you already figured it out or you are just passing (and end up having to go past it cause it's too late to change course). I mean it literally tells you at the time you are passing the destination so you get absolutely no warning at all. I suppose at least if you haven't already spotted it you'll know which side to look on when you have to turn around.

TomTom is my preferred choice as the menu is quite easy to navigate and the instructions and maps are very easy to follow. I use the standalone and the app version for a few years now.

Well, I've just purchased both TomTom and Navigon since AppShopper.com says this is the lowest price both of them have ever been...

TomTom just looks so much nicer than Navigon but I'll have to see it in action...

Quick question though for TomTom: How do you add a stop (POI) on the way to your destination?

For example, let's say I'm going to Disney World but I want to stop at a Burger King on the way. It seems like you can either [Navigate To] --> [POI along Route], but this REPLACES your destination with the POI.

If you use [Route Options] --> [Find Alternative] --> [Travel Via...] --> [POI Along Route], then it seems to insert the POI along your route but it doesn't look like it gives any indication when you reach the POI.

This is one of my other problems with TomTom. You pretty much summed up the stops on a trip options, and they're poor, in my opinion. You can also only add one POI within a trip.

Other than that, and it not telling you what side your destination is one, I think it's a perfect navigation app.

Dang, that would in itself make Navigon a lot more appealing to me (glad I got it). I've used using multiple POI's to create a trip plan (I wanted to plot out a certain route and take certain roads) so that the GPS can guide me on the plan I chose.

Without being able to use multiple POI's in a GPS, you pretty much have to let it plot out the route. When you're talking about trying to take certain roads and take a scenic route you heard about or taking small roads for the sake of it, that's not so great.

What's the correct way to add a POI along the route? Will it tell you when you've reached the POI or does it only announce your final destination?

How often does Navigon require repurchasing the app due to version changes or is it good for life of app?

Just once (same for in-app purchases) like any other apps as long as you've used the same iTunes account.

Last I checked (last year) all apps including in-app purchases can share up to 5 iDevices on the same iTunes account.

If you get any prompts to purchase again, go ahead download them for FREE if you're sure you used the same iTunes account.

This is correct. My wife and I share this program with no problems! Just repurchase the add ins and it will not charge you!

[Travel Via...] Tap this button to change your route so that it passes a particular location, Burger King. When you do this, a marker is shown on the map for the location you choose to travel via.

You choose the location you want to pass in the same way as you choose a destination. This means you can select from all the same options that are offered when you choose a destination, for example, Address, Favorite, Point of Interest and Point on Map.

The TomTom app will calculate a new route to your destination that passes the location you chose. Unlike your final destination, the TomTom app does not inform you when you pass by this location.

From Navigon:
Important note for MobileNavigator iPhone users outside of Europe: We’ve heard about problems entering an address or starting to navigate after updating to version 1.7. If you face any of these issues, please delete the app and install/sync it again. It then works without any problems. We apologize for any inconvenience and are working on a solution.

Thanks for the heads-up!

EDIT: Not showing up in the app store for me as of yet anyway

Pending Apple's approval: Middle East, USA, and USA/CAN.....MyRegion apps are version 1.7.0

Am I the only person who likes Magellan? I bought it mainly because of the "you buy the $40 app and we give you $40 toward the car kit," but I ended up not using that since Amazon sold the car kit for $30 cheaper without added shipping.

Anyway, it seems very nice to me. Maybe I wish the music player didn't have to include playlists all the time, but that's OK. I can always just switch apps. I like the spoken street names since my Garmin didn't do that, and the map doesn't have my home about 1/5 mile away from where it actually is. The free traffic also enticed me, although I haven't needed to use it yet.

The screenshots I have seen from TomTom, Navigon and Magellan all look good. It would really be nice to try these things before you buy them instead of just having to take a leap of faith. But so far so good with Magellan.

iphone 3g

would anyone be able to confirm which app I should download for my iphone 3G (yes, 3G) and my tomtom car kit?

just because I've heard 3G can be buggy and slow on both?

This is the most up to date thread on this topic I could find so probably the best place to ask this:

Do both TomTom and Navigon offer the lane guidance as you're approaching the road branching or highway exit now? So for example, will they tell me in advance something like "Switch to the rightmost lane, and prepare to exit in 0.5 miles on the Exit #67 on the right".

The $1 GPS MotionDrive app was doing this just fine until the trial period expired, but now I see that renewing it for two years will cost me about as much as buying one of these two apps, not to mention not having to rely on data roaming if I drive to USA from Canada, like I have to with Motiondrive app.

I'm asking about this lane switch announcements because I remember reading that either Navigon or TomTom didn't have this in some of the earlier iterations, but they've both been updated numerous times, and I don't know if they added this.

I only have Navigon with its latest update, it will only show you on the screen which lane you should be before the exit. For example on a freeway, it will highlight the right most lane while also telling you to prepare to exit. Unfortunately it doesn't say it, just displays the lane guidance.
