Can anyone confirm if you can or cannot plot multiple way-points in the TomTom app? This is crucial for me but I can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere.

I quite like the TomTom, but at £40 to see if it does multiple waypoints it is a bit much of a gamble!

You can have multiple waypoints in TomTom, it's just not very intuitive.

In Navigon, the route planner lets you pick a bunch of different locations and then change their order, etc, before planning out your route.

TomTom doesn't have functionality like this. You can use Advanced Planning to set your departure point and destination. From there, you can use Route Options -> Find Alternative -> Travel Via to add a waypoint. What sucks is that you have to put them in reverse order.

Example: You are traveling from point A to point E today, but are stopping at point B first, C second, and D third. To do this in TomTom, you select Advanced Planning and set your departure point (A) and destination (E). You then choose Route Options -> Find Alternative -> Travel Via and enter your second-to-last destination (D). Then repeat this with point C, and again with point B. TomTom will then take you to each point in the correct order.

A really stupid way to have to do this, but it is possible. Definitely my most-requested feature for 1.6 as Navigon does this extremely well.

Thanks comatose for your comprehensive answer.

I think I will go for the TomTom because I guess it essentially does have the feature but also because its a lot cheaper!

Hopefully they will improve it though in one of their upcoming updates.

The other thing to take into consideration is that TomTom's routing is better overall. So even if Navigon has TomTom beat in terms of its interface for multi-point routing, it likely will not select the best/fastest route, while TomTom will.

sometimes i like to mute the navigation portion due to various reasons, yet still have the music streaming from my phone to the stereo. navigon doesn't let me do this... tomtom has a mute button which allows me to do this.

sucks because navigon is much cheaper, and i like its poi search a lot more.

I've tried this and TomTom 1.5 only allows a single "Route Via". If you enter a second one, it replaces the first.
Still, it hardly matters. The method you describe requires the user to know the best order for the trip in advance. If you cant dynamical arrange the destinations in order to optimize your route, what benefit is it?
For the record, this option of no use to me. Sure, I could come up with some hypothetical scenarios, but in reality a use case where I would need this functionality has literally never come up in my life. Your needs may vary.

You are right... weird. They must have changed this because I never remember it doing this before. They also changed the waypoint icon that appears on the map, so this might have been intentional for 1.5.

The reason I wanted multiple waypoints is for a bike tour through Europe. I don't want to take all the major roads but i do want to create a custom route.

The best way I found with the Tomtom is to enter all the waypoints as favourites and then on the day navigate to each one individually. You can do 2 at once. i.e. To get from A to E, I'd navigate to C via B, and then once I reach C, put E via D as the destination.

It's a bit clumsy but I'm not fussed as it does the job.

Search Function

I only have Navigon and I hate the way you have to search for a location on there, does Tom Tom have a good search function? Why can't Navigon have a search funtion like the native iPhone Map where you just put the name of the business name and voila! With Navigon you have to go thru a lot of step just to search for example a starbucks store  Unless I'm missing something, is there a better way to search for a location on Navigon?

Navigon has google search, so does Tom Tom.

I have the Geocache app. I'm looking for a good GPS app that will work with the Geocache app to find a route to a cache. Is there a GPS app that will:

1- Automatically make a route from a chosen cache on the Geocache app without having me cut and paste coordinates? Does Navigon do this?

2- turn by turn text to speech directions

Any help would be appreciated.

Don

Navigon has google search, so does Tom Tom.

Navigon's searching is pretty awful. It has Google search, but it doesn't work very well. The standard POI search in Navigon is just pathetic. It searches only in the exact town you provide, it will not search outside of that.

TomTom's standard POI search is very nice - you give it a starting point and it will continue to search from that point until it finds what you are looking for (e.g., if I search in Dallas, it will go outside of Dallas to find the POI if it is not in that exact city/town). I have never had an issue with the Google search, either, although the position on the map for Google entries is not usually exactly right.

Get the free "Yellow Pages" app by Avantar. It has a great search function and LINKS TO NAVIGON for driving directions. I think it will largely solve your complaints about Navigon search.

I had the contrast difference line since 1.4, so assume it's always been there, however since updating to 1.5 (uk version), I've noticed a significant performance drop when navigating - more pauses on corners/roundabouts etc and instead of the screen updating very rapidly (almost realtime for me) before it now seems to do it about 2 or 3 times a second (reminds me of my old tomtom GO!)

Anyone else experienced similar issues to myself or am I just unlucky?

If you are willing to JB your phone, there is a great tool called "Navigate From Maps". This adds a button to the the info page of a of a pin in Google Maps that will navigate you that destination. This will route to the location via either Navigon or TomTom.

I've used Navigon's Google search on a regular basis since the feature was added and haven't had a single miss or issue. It's been flawless.

Funny, I have yet to have Navigon's Google search find anything for me (at least anything that navigon doesn't already have on its map. Not that Navigon has much on their map). Like seriously, anything including major retail stores.

No matter, I found a yellow page app that allows me to look up directions using Navigon and that one has been useful for finding stuff (I don't even bother using Navigon to find a location I don't already have an address for, I use yellow pages first and then click the button to get directions using Navigon).

Interesting. I stopped using the built in POI database because it was garbage from day one. It was the only thing that was really frustrating for me with the app. The Google search finds everything, even some fairly obscure things like variations in the names of parks (I have a kid in a soccer league where we have to drive quite a bit) and also some hole in the wall restaurants. The most notable for me was a small thai restaurant that had moved. The Nagivon Google search found the new location and it had moved just two weeks prior. I was very impressed.

For iPhone TomTom U.S. & Canada version: does the in-app purchase of 12-month traffic cover Canada???

I don't see an in-app traffic purchase for Canada & Alaska version.

If traffic coverage is in Canada, could someone please provide some screen shots?

Thank you!

Update: No traffic coverage for Canada at this time.

I have to go back on my previous post... I did finally get results from the Google search in Navigon. I don't know what I did this time that was different, but it brought up the results I expected. I can't get it to happen consistently, though, which seems really weird. Lots of other apps (including TomTom) use Google search with no issue at all.

The bottom line is that Navigon's POI searching just sucks any way you slice it.

I agree about the search. Nav. Had no problem finding a bunch of burger kings but couldn't find the taco bell that I knew was next to the burger king. Just fooling around with the app Of course but it was weird that it could search and find one fast food joint and not the other.
