Unfortunately, no. As of now, there is no version of TomTom that will allow all of North America. The only in-app purchase is for traffic.
TomTom - USA
TomTom - USA and Canada
TomTom - USA and Mexico

FYI - I don't know if this is true, but I have heard that the USA only version is more accurate and faster due to having less compression (all are 1.5Gb, despite "USA only" having a significantly smaller geographic area)

Navigon

I have both of them. I use tomtom more because the maps are up to date. My house was built in 2006, it's on tomtom but not navigon. Otherwise, they both are good.

I have a different experience. My house was built in 2002 and it is not on TomTom. Navigon is way better in my opinion.

-edit- the info below is wrong. Navigon uses NavTeq, TomTom uses Tele Atlas.
Both TomTom and Navigon get their primary map data from Tele Atlas. This is then processed and supplemented with other sources and data. The end result is that they have very similar maps, sharing many of the same mistakes and gaps, with a few pockets of differences. Most people find the map data of each to be on-par with each other (and a hair behind Garmin).

But at the end of the day, the quickest way to lose a customer is by missing their house. They both update quarterly, so it's good to check in once and while to see if it was added.

Just so that no one is misinformed, I believe that one of the primary distinctions between Navigon and TomTom is that they receive their mapping data from different sources.

Navigon receives their mapping data from NAVTEQ, whereas TomTom recieves its mapping data from Tele Atlas. This is seen by perusing either of the respective application's iTunes pages.

This is correct. Tom Tom used to use NAVTEQ but switched to TELE ATLAS.

I was surprised that one of the basic functions is not on the navigon, not sure about tomtom since I only have one. enter a destination by cross streets where you enter two intersecting street names. is this feature available on tomtom?

This feature is available on both of them.

Thanks for the clarification. Not sure why I had Tele Atlas stuck in my head for both.

I'm looking to get one of these for motorcycle trips... I end up getting lost far too often when I try to memorize the route :p

Any feedback on how well these would work thrown in my jeans or jacket pocket once the route has been set? I have a speaker system in my helmet to get the voice updates.

And I know the battery drain w/o a charger was killer before... I don't plan on trips that are longer than 2 hours... would the iPhone 4 hold up?

They both do good audio guidance; however, if your riding in areas with good data service, you should try MapQuest 4. It's hard to use as a dash nav system, since the map is always north up, but this wont matter if it's in your pocket. With the screen off, battery should be OK. It has very good TTS, decent maps/routing and it's free.
(maps are download on the fly, so data service is required)

I haven't tried TomTom, but I've had Navigon since day 1.

Very happy with the features. Love the Google search and integration with the Where To? app.

However, out of the 10 times (estimate) I've used it, it's lead me to a spot a few miles from my destination twice.

I've got Navigon. I'd love to try the TomTom app.

What "Mac In School" wrote here earlier about the Navigon app actually taking him somewhere else is what has happened to me quite a few times.

One example, my family and I were going to go fly in an airbaloon. I put in the address in the Navigon app. Started driving. In the end the app said we were at our destination, just leaving us hanging in the middle of a highway. Not even somewhere you could stop on the highway, just a certain point.
There wasn't any underway/bridge or anything that could confuse the app. Nothing.

I put in the address again, and started driving. Sure enough it would lead us back to the same point on the highway.

The third time (using the EXACT same address!!) it actually got the right spot and it was maybe a 10 minute drive from there.

This has happend a few times and that's why I can't recommend the Navigon app to anyone. Really frustrating..

Thanks for the input, err404!

I'll definitely check out MapQuest 4, but I think the most appealing item for me is having the data all on the phone. I'm semi-concerned that I'll have a weaker signal (on top of the already weak-ish signal I'm getting w/ the iPhone 4) when it's obscured by thick layers of clothing. Still have the unlimited plan, so data amount shouldn't be an issue.

I'll download it and try it on the way home from work, though, see how well it does.

I have navigon with traffic and loved it.
I then got tomtom and I thought it was ok, but was behind navigon in terms of features.

TomTom then started to catch up with Navigon, and now has a great traffic system and it has iqroutes.

I own navigon and tomtom. They are BOTH great apps. Only one of these is installed on my iphone though.

Verdict........... TomTom

I have used both and IMO, Motion X Drive is by far the best. Hands down. It's better than the built in Navi in my car.

Can either of them find an address if you have one in your contacts or iCal without having to renter them in? You know, just click on an appointment you have in your calendar and hit some button like "get directions"?

They both do this for your contact list, but not calendar appointments.

Question about Navigon

One of the features I liked about the built in Google Maps on the iphone is the ability to get directions from point A to point B, and then step through that route turn by turn to get a good overview before the trip.

I just purchased Navigon for my iphone 4 and I cannot find this feature there. I do see it offers a route overview by giving some simulation that goes extremely slow but it doesnt allow you to manually skip to the next turn like the built-in app. Am I missing something?

Do owners of either Navigon or Tom-Tom or still find functionality in the built in Maps app?

Thanks!

After you start your navigation session go to options. Under route you see turn by turn directions, this is a list of all turns. That is the overview you get with navigon.

So if I am home, and want to see directions from my work to the library (a trip that I will take later in the day, but want to get an overview of now) how do I do it in Navigon?

If I go to More-->Route, I can create these directions, but it always takes me on a simulation such that if I click on Options-->Turn by Turn, the directions will disappear one by one as the simulation runs through.
