If you mean like Mathematica, no. Have you seen the price for that package!? I'd have to sell my Mac to get it! Or half my Mac if I qualify for the educational version. Instead, I rely on Excel, AppleWorks, some shell scripts and C programs I wrote, and even Calculator now and then.

i saw the list price in macworld...very expensive

they had some older versions that ran on os 9 at the local college bookstore for a hundred bucks and i thought that was expensive, but had i known what a bargain that was, i might have considered it

This stuff is a little more affordable.

how long will it be until all 50 people in the top 50 have 10k posts?
For starters, here are the dates when the long-term Top 10 will get to 10,000 posts at their long-term rates. (For members who were in the previous Top 50, the other date, in parens, is the date they will reach 10,000 posts if they continue at their rate from the last 6 months.)

Mr. Anderson - already has >10,000 posts
wdlove - already has >10,000 posts
mad jew - April 9, 2006 (February 2, 2006)
Lacero - August 2, 2006
katie ta achoo - August 4, 2007
mkrishnan - September 14, 2006 (July 5, 2006)
jsw - October 14, 2006 (January 30, 2007)
devilot - October 18, 2006
Blue Velvet - March 26, 2007 (February 17, 2007)
clayj - November 18, 2007

That's not the answer to your specific question. I'll get to that one later since my spreadsheet is still warming up. Of course, it's been 78 degrees and sunny and clear today in Los Angeles, so not much warming up is needed!

Nice graphs and math, Doctor Q. Just about 200 posts till I reach the weird # ranks. Then 10,000 more posts if I'm aiming to be on the list.
I don't think I want to be on the list.

Little did I suspect... I just heard the news that today's high temperature in Los Angeles, 85 degrees Fahrenheit, was a record high since 103 years ago! I'm glad I stayed indoors hunched over my computer all week, and didn't venture outside where I could have been burned to a crisp!

so Q, how long will it be until all 50 people in the top 50 have 10k posts?
That was a tough homework assignment, Mr. Anderson. I hope I get extra credit or another bag of Japanese cookies for this one.

The answer is 1,346 days. If I had said September 13, 2009 (the date 1,346 days from now), you might have marked me wrong because you asked how long, not when. ;)

It wasn't as easy as I first thought, because I couldn't simply compute when the last-place member would reach 10,000 posts. That's because I didn't know in advance who would be in 50th place at the time everyone got there. But Where there's a guy named Will, there's a way, as they say.

Based on long-term post rates, here are the predicted numbers of posts on September 13, 2009, when Platform, who will be 50th at the time, will cross the 10,000-post event horizon.

Ha-hah! 13th place!

*gets struck by lightning*

stupid 13th place. I must be 12th! :)

doc Q thanks for all these numbers. it's so nifty! I love statistics!

So, statistics + MacRumors = KT is :D:D^_^

Very, very nicely done, Doctor Q! :) Of course, you haven't taken into account the effect of a Mactel on Mad Jew's performance. I think it will cause an amazing surge in 2006, and by 2009 he will have well clear of 1M posts. ;) :D Of course, by 2009, I also make the following predictions: we will live in cities in the sky, fly to work, access the internet telepathically, be computing on MacOS X 11.0 (while many users will argue about what cat 11.1 will be named after, there will still be a core contingency insisting that it be the liger). My final prediction for 2009 is that Vista will be guaranteed to be shipping by the fourth quarter, but will sadly be delayed to 2010. ;) :D

Wow, am I ever late to this thread! That’s what I get for being in Vegas for a week when this thread came out. I was wondering when it would be posted, and then finally did a search to see that I completely missed the boat! ;)

At any rate, thanks again so much Doctor Q for all the time and effort you put into these things. I really enjoy them, and they are a fun part of the Forums. It will be interesting to see if your 6-month extrapolations hold true!

And thanks mad jew for making my excessive, unhealthy post count rate seem not so bad when compared to yours. :p

Actually we already know. It’s 603. That’s the next processor after the 601, and when wdlove let his Demi God status lapse, his 604 status appeared briefly. Whether there's a 603e in there as well, I'm not sure. But now you know.

Too true, but it did surprise me when I first saw my 6502 "status" gone and back to a regular poster, not that it really matters in the scheme of things ;)

I could see a few posts here and there being wastelanded, deleted, etc., but how in God's name did you manage to lose 270 posts?!?

Ah well, you're now one of those extremely rare anomalies on MacRumors, being a regular with an avatar. That's cool.

I think Hydroman suffered when the Picture Association Thread was wastelanded – I know I lost quite a few posts myself and dropped down a ranking when that thread bit the dust (it took me a moment or two to twig what had happened), but by that point I was well over 500 posts so no avatar-related quirkiness on my part.

I think you're very right... ;)

You were some of those really taking a hit when that thread went:

Yeah, 158 posts for me. I'm now just under 1,580 so that's 10% of my total MacRumors postings gone in one Wastelanded thread...

Still, even with those extra posts I wouldn't be anywhere near the prolific posters who make up the Doctor's list – I'm just an amateur in comparison!

Trust me, that's not necessarily a bad thing... ;)

And don't worry Jaffa Cake, we'll keep the Doctor Who thread going forever without being wastelanded, so all your posts there will be safe. ;) Although I suppose I'm the one who would benefit most from that one not getting shut down...  ::cool:

Restrained, I like to think. :) (says the girl who has less than two posts a day, somehow....)

Puzzle: Who can identify these two other threads that took a bunch of posts with them to the Wasteland?
