the admin essentially removed post count as a punishment for the naughty users.
the admins would alter how the forum works, in response to some members bickering. I don't know when or why the post count is not active on the console forum, but I can easily say the admins don't punish members by changing how the forum counts posts.

At the time it definitely came across as a punitive measure.

As I say that was a good while ago now (2007) and a lot has changed (we have since the restriction - the iPhone and iOS and clearly console type gaming on Apple hardware) and with things like Pokemon GO and such storming the world, it does feels that that sub fora is somewhat of an enigma post count wise when posts in areas such as alternatives to iOS and Windows applications etc all count.

Click on your username and go to your profile page. Tabbed section with areas on the right.

Thanks.

So I am behind the times and noticed the "areas" section of the profile page and like how it dhows post count by forum.

Is there a way to show the most prolific PRSI posters? or a count with the non counted forums included? I wonder how different it is than the current lists.

I know for me, it is about 3k worth of "uncounted" posts

For instance, skunk has 23k worth of PRSI posts and jkcerda has 17k that are not "counted" but populate the spy heavily as a result. On the other side, GGJ, one of the more prolific posters has "0" PRSI posts. I am finding this breakdown interesting

For me, I have about 3,300 posts in PRSI.

Yeah I have 10 years of posts in the console section which must amount to a good few thousand at this stage. There was a time when those posts actually counted but after petty bickering broke out and flame wars between users (around PS3/Xbox 360 launch), the admin essentially removed post count as a punishment for the naughty users.

Not long after that and more effective cull of banned users, it all died down and it must be one of the most harmless sections on the forum now and has been for a good number of years now. Nearly all the regular posters there are long time members / contributors of MR.

I would love to see a punitive measure enacted at a time when there were issues; simply removed at this stage and users post counts once more re-instated as discussions in that sub far area are a million miles apart from the chaos and radicalisation that goes on in PRSI.

That was part of a larger forum reorganisation. The now ancient "Games" forum was broken down to two: Apple Games (nowadays known as Mac and PC Games) and Console Games. Posts in the latter are not counted since it's not directly Apple related (similar to PRSI), but this has been the case since day one. See the original announcement thread here.

As far as I am aware, those are the only parts of the forum that are excluded from the tally, or count, of posts made.
That's correct. The forums that are only marginally about Apple are excluded, as are forums that aren't for discussions.

My stats are based on the post counts in user profiles, so those forums aren't covered. You can search for posts by a given user in a given forum if you're curious, subject to the maximum number of search results.

Any thoughts on why the total of posts in "Areas" on my profile (excluding the aforementioned forums) doesn't match my post count? There's a difference of 962 that I can't account for. It's not a big deal, of course, but just curious what other forums are excluded.

I'm not sure. Perhaps it results from forums being archived. Posts are sometimes hidden or moved into undisplayed areas, for example due to a privacy issue, and perhaps that throws the total off as well.

Could it be because some threads get moved to wasteland?

Sometimes, it may not necessarily mean that threads have been wastelanded but that a serious cull of posts in a thread has taken place.

This is a bit OT, but I'm wondering about the distribution of ranks -- that is, how many people in each division from regular on up to the top. How fat is the bottom? Or is there a bulge somewhere? Sorry.

I have a vague memory of having seen that compilation a few years ago.

I remember that studying that particular bulge with fascination when looking at a far earlier version (probably 2009, or 2010, when I was abroad) of these statistics.

I think this is what you're looking for: Top 50 Posters Extrapolated, July 2015

Thanks a lot for resurrecting this and linking it. It does make for fascinating reading.

People who join then never post. Those are the ones that confuse me?

Sometimes, they join to find out the answer to a problem, or some issue they may have with an Apple product, and they are able to have the matter answered without ever having had to post.

The only reason I joined the forum initially was because I had bought an Apple computer, a MBP, as a belated birthday gift to myself in 2008, and, as what is termed 'a switcher', there was a lot about the Apple world - such as basic commands - and keyboard short-cuts - that I just didn't know.

Hence, I lurked for a while, before joining, and my first post was certainly a question about something to do with my MBP.

This was the first online community I had ever joined, and I couldn't believe that there were places where you could simply post a question, - sometimes even a technical question - and people would try to come up with answers in their own time, out of a sense of decency.

Yes this is the only forum I'm on. Which is probably I'm on at least one or two of @Doctor Q's lists!
Oh that and I have no social life!

My situation is somewhat similar, I have to say.

Re social media, while I am on LinkedIn, that is used solely for professional purposes (or reconnecting with professional colleagues), and I am also on Twitter, though I tweet fairly sparingly. This is the only forum where I have an active presence (and yes, for domestic reasons, my social life is pretty curtailed, too).
