Throttled

I'm in the NY market region. I learned they keep track on a per market area basis. I'm getting the warning this month at 1600 MB. been throttled at less than 4 GB. also spent lots of time on the phone with them trying to figure out a way to know that month's data throttle limit, which they won't tell me.

also really pissed. want to leave at&t but the ETF is almost 400 bucks. i'm trapped.

So what next

I'm at the point that I'm very serious about leaving ATT. I'd do so happily if not for the following:

1) I need the ability to do voice and data simultaneously. I use it all the time and I'm not willing to compromise on that.

2) I'd like to use an Iphone, would also consider a high end android/windows phone

To the best of my knowledge that leaves me very little in the way of options.

Verizon and Sprint don't do data and voice right? (I live in Sacramento)

T-mobile doesn't have the iphone (I could use my existing iphones perhaps but would only get edge speeds?)

If I wait for the next iphone will it have that capability on any network other than ATT?

For those of us that consider this to be the final straw with ATT what are our options? I called ATT and told them I was leaving over this but am having serious issues deciding where to go. I'm considering an LG optimus on Virign just because if I can't have what I want I'll be content shuffling back to the dark ages. At least I'll know what I'm getting as opposed to this crap from ATT. Anyone else in a similar situation or have ideas about what to do next? The painful truth is that the best option for me would really be to stay with ATT and switch to the 3GB plan but my pride won't allow them to force me out of the very same unlimited plan that they used to retain me.

Verizon and Sprint will do voice and data on 4G phones, Verizon already has a lot of LTE coverage. Sprint's WiMax coverage is poor though and they don't have LTE yet. You could go with something like the RAZR Maxx so battery wouldn't be an issue. You won't get simultaneous voice and data on iPhones or Windows Phones though on Verizon and Sprint since they're CDMA only on those networks.

can't even load MAPS to get directions they've slowed it so much. spent 3 hours with the data center and customer support getting the run around. i asked for one of the three things

1 remove the data block so i don't have to go buy a new phone monday so i can use my phone for work (will not be removed before feb 2nd end of billing cycle)

2 let me out of my contract without the early termination fee so that i can go get a phone that isn't restricted so i can resume work.

3. send me a letter or any other form of confirmation, even a text, that they are, indeed, doing this to me. not that they MAY do this to me, but that i am being effected for having used 2.4 gb of data.

they will do none of them. they say 'they cannot' to which i say send me to someone who can do something, and they say no such person exists. anyone know who i can talk to? how to join the class action lawsuit?

they did offer me $25. ****. that.

One tactic may be for everyone with Unlimited Plans to continually download data (say by streaming NetFlix 24 hours per day) and rack up as much data per month as humanly possible.

AT&T may decide to cancel your contract. At the very least they should not charge you an ETF.

I strongly urge you to file a complaint with the FCC. Please see the thread on this message forum entitled: AT&T Bandwidth Throttling

Yesterday I went and got an iPhone 4S on Verizon to try out the service in my area. I'm currently on the unlimited data with ATT and keep getting the warning for the top 5% data usage. I hate to say it but, Verizon in my area is soo slow!! I can get an easy 3-5 mb connection from ATT as with Verizon is at the best 1mb. I wanted to switch to Verizon because of ATT BS. But with the data connection speeds I'm seeing with Verizon it sure makes ATT look good. The best we can hope for is ATT remove this clamp down on us unlimited data customers. Either that or wait for a LTE iPhone. In that case I would switch to Verizon even though I am capped because ATT won't let me turn on my phone without some kind of warning.

Thanks for the feedback. I played with the Droid RAZR and, despite a few shortcomings, really enjoyed it. If I could be sure of voice and data I think I'm ready to switch now.
It's sad because I used to really love ATT and defend them but this is such madness. In the last 18 months I've averaged 1.4 GB per month of data usage on an unlimited plan. 2 months ago they throttled me around 2 GB, last month they throttled at 1.7 ish. I was in downtown honolulu trying to find a restaurant and the internet was unusable.

yeah I'm in the same boat, I love ATTs speed. I drop calls at my house all of the time. I was at radio shack over the weekend and the salesman let me play with the droid razr on verizon's LTE. I'm as big an apple fanatic as ANYONE but when I saw the speedtes app hit nearly 30MBs down and then almost 20 up it definitely gave me something to consider. If I knew that an LTE Iphone were just around the corner I'd wait but I can't wait until October. This shouldn't be as agonizing a decision as it is but for some reason making the right choice here means a lot to me.

Ok to clarify.
Based on what the AT&T rep told me when I was talking to her the other night, we are not compared to users on tiered plans. users on on unlimited plans are only being compared to those on unlimited plans. so if there are 100 people remaining on unlimited plans and 95% of those people use less than 100MB then the throttling will begin at 100MB regardless if we are able to download 10GB for the remaining month or not.

Additionally the throttling is to prevent streaming not jailbreak data usage. She said the phone is not designed to stream video continuously on their network (because we all know the AT&T network cannot really support high bandwidth anyways.)

My point about downloading as much data as I can from AT&T is to promote change. If I cannot use my phone to stream Pandora(an Approved app) and use about 3GB-4GB a month then I am going to use more. I am getting screwed I am going to screw them. That was my point. It costs them more money to use 10GB a month for my Bandwidth than 4GB.

And what about those scare tactics with texts warning users approaching 5% if everyone gets that at 1.5GB and 95% stop using their data for fear of throttling and not being able to use it when they need it, but people like us continue we are forced into that 5%. And why the cutoff at 2gb that seems like such an arbitrary number. And now a 3GB plan is available at $30
hmm starts to smell a little fishy. Lets see I am throttled at 2GB so I cannot really download more data, then my usage never goes above 2.5GB and AT&T magically convinces me to switch stating something like "you would be paying the same price and you would not be throttled." Great! Miracle, then I magically start using more data and no more throttling, and all of the sudden I use 3.1GB so I get moved up a tier and whoops $50 for something that used to be $30 and AT&T makes more money.
Always follow the money.
I personally am going to show AT&T that regardless how much they throttle my phone i will still use 10GB a month. F-them

I commented on another thread in this forum that it might be a good tactic for everyone with Unlimited Plans to consistently download data by streaming NetFlix 24 hours per day in an attempt to rack up as much data per month as possible.

Remember, AT&T wants you to give up your Unlimited Plan and migrate to a Tiered Plan. Perhaps running in the opposite direction might place a stick in their spokes ... at least for the time being. Hopefully, the FCC will act on our behalf.

These threads are so entertaining, lol leagal recourse, class action lawsuits, hahaha. You guys are too funny, all over some phone data. You all act like they're killing your parents.

On one hand, AT&T banners 4G speeds, on the other hand, they throttle the bandwidth of their customers. Does anyone else see a discrepancy here?

wish i could stream endlessly...they've pretty much cut my data off...

speedtest results: .05 mbps

can't even locate myself on google maps. they've essentially cut off my data, making my unlimited plan a 2gb plan. but according to their contract, they have the right to modify my contract at anytime...but shouldn't a modification this big, basically taking away services promised to me for money i paid they, constitute a breach of said contract, nullifying it? i just want out of my contract so i can go to verizon with the 4gb $30 plan so i can have a phone that works again.

Same here. Maybe this will help:

Because if it was at 10GB they throttled then more and more would use up to 10GB. And to those comparing the unlimited plan to the tiered plan, why not switch to it since its so much better than the unlimited plan now anyway?

Though no one will and they'll keep complaining and complaining. You tough guys should show AT&T who is boss and stick it to em'.

All sarcasm aside, GO TO SPRINT!!!!! It's really not that hard. Sell your iPhone and use that to pay the ETF and presto your done. But in the mean time shut up about the throttling.

You have all of the credibility of a braying ass. Shut up and get out of the thread if you don't like it. It befuddles me that someone would have such a strong objection to people complaining about a shady business practice yet that same person would frequent a forum where that shady business practice was the topic of discussion. I may very well switch carriers, it's really none of your business, right now I'm collaborating with like-minded individuals to see if we can correct a poor decision by ATT. All you have to do if you don't like it is stay out of this forum. You might be missing out on a forum more suited to you, like "Just found out I'm a huge *******, what should I do?"

I just filed with the FCC. This is INSANE. You throttle people at 2gigs on unlimited, yet you don't throttle 5gig data plan users!? Its the same damn data....

I just got a voice message today from an ATT rep about my FCC complaint. I will call them back after work, but its good to know that they are made to follow up on this.

Just got my call from ATT about my fcc complaint. Atleast it makes them spend money on a responce team.

Just because AT&T has to call us back doesn't mean any good will come of it. They will just say its now policy to throttle data for the top 5%.
