Top Stories: Face ID on Future Macs, Elon Musk Criticizes Apple, and More

It’s unbelievable how far behind the hardware is compared to the competitors. I am caught up in the software ecosystem of Apple and forced to buy iPhones with 60hz screens, no fingerprint scanners and limited battery life (which might be the reason for 60Hz). And they leak a Titanium case?!?! I mean WTF is wrong with you Apple - it’s far from Innovation 🤢🤮

He should be more careful with his statements because I never even bothered to take any more interest in him after that. Wrote him off as nuts or a self promoting a hole.

That's what it took to decide Elon was a self-promoting ******? ;)

Hey look! It says it makes the authentication system LESS SECURE!

That's literally what your screenshot says. Did you read it?
I did read it. And I enjoy FaceID very much, even more with this setting enabled.

What are you asking? Your post says having to look at the notch to unlock it is annoying. This setting allows to you to not have to look at the notch to unlock it.

So, you want to not look at your phone to unlock it because that's more pleasant? Are you implying that you prefer TouchID over FaceID?

I didn't say it was pornographic, I said it feels like perverse behavioral conditioning. You could try using the Dictionary app that ships with macOS next time.
You said “It forces eye contact with the phone to unlock it, which is annoying at best, and perverse at worse.”

Bahahahahahahahahaha SO dramatic, condescending AND full of lies 😂

[...]Apple will peak and decline without a leader that understands tech better and hates organizational bureaucracy and terrorizes innovation, especially disruptive innovation. […]
Do you have a timeframe for this? I want to know how to manage my apple portfolio.

wow SO AGGRESSIVE

Yeah, it was mentioned earlier in the thread. The problem is, and iOS warns you, that it makes FaceID less secure.

Also where tf do you get off telling me I have a first world problem? You can go intercourse yourself.
Complaining about how one unlocks their phone is a first world problem. Just like how I complain sometimes when a grocery store is out a specific item I like. FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS.

There are bigger things in the world to complain about. We both get to sit here on the internet we can afford and grapple back and fourth while others are worried if they will wake up with running water tomorrow or a house. So, yes, I stand firm in stating first world problems when complaining about unlocking your device.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm implying (TouchID is better), which is why I said FaceID belongs in a dustbin.

Dramatic? Sure. I'll accept that. It is a dramatic statement. But my intuition is not wrong. FaceID is a failure.

Nah I don't accept that premise, this is a pretty big issue, and not just for the first world. You may be a decadent latte-sipping bugperson, but I'm not going to let you classify me as that.

Everyone's phone is loaded with personal information, it is highly important to keep that secure and to provide the best UX to do so. Your argument is even worse when you take into account that most developing nations primary access to the online world IS through their phones.

But hey guys, don't just take my word for it...

'Master Face': Researchers Say They've Found a Wildly Successful Bypass for Face Recognition Tech

Computer scientists at Israel's Tel Aviv University (TAU) say they have developed a "master face" method for circumventing a large number of facial recognition systems, by applying artificial intelligence to generate a facial template. The researchers say the technique exploits such systems' usage of broad sets of markers to identify specific people; producing facial templates that match many such markers essentially creates an omni-face that can bypass numerous safeguards.

Except there's a battery cell production constraint. Talk about me not knowing how to build cars, if you think car companies can just wave their magic wand to get unlimited battery cells for as much as they want, you're way off track.
well, since they're all about to introduce new EV models I guess they managed to solve it somehow, right?

Then why has competition been coming since 2013 (here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702303653004579210053345661982) yet it took about 7 years before the Taycan was finally able to beat a Model S only to get beaten again 1 year later with the refreshed Model S.
Did you even read your own article? Just curious, because you definitely haven't. Most of the models mentioned in the article are plug-in hybrids which still include a gasoline engine. Only exception is the i3 of which they managed to sell a few thousand maybe. None of those cars directly competed with Tesla at the time. The article is just using a grabby headline, that's about it.

Earliest sighting was Ford was "already working on" back in early 2017 https://www.motor1.com/news/146119/ford-all-electric-cuv-2020/ which would suggest a 2016 start date. 4-5 years later, they released it. Tesla incorporated in 2003 and 5 years later released the roadster. Not bad for a 5 year old start up vs 118 year old Ford.
I guess I can give you that one. Of course suggestions mean nothing but you're right, it took them about 4-5 years from start to finish. Tesla released their Roadster after 5 years but it wasn't a clean-sheet design like Ford's. The Roadster is basically a somewhat reworked Lotus Elise converted to an electric drivetrain. The Mach-E is done from scratch. That's the difference.

Biased anecdotes. Pointless. I drive a Model 3 for the past 4 years. Flawless build quality. Now what?
The internet is littered with descriptions of Tesla's lack of quality from awful paint, to horrible door gaps, to bad motors in early cars, etc. Hell, my buddy bought his wife a Model X and at 65K or so it developed an absolutely horrible steering rack squeak, I actually witnessed it myself. Tesla refused to sell him a part due to a car being out of warranty and for whatever other reason. So now he has a $100K car that makes a funny noise. My 50 year old Beetle doesn't. Funny, no?

I can go on and on about how the ergonomics is horrible, how they managed to cost cut a mechanical glove box latch out of a Model 3 which costs $55K+ in some instances and so on. But you get the picture. I'm kidding, being a Musk fanboi of course you don't.

Somehow you missed range and supercharger network. Amazing how you cut out something so critical to owning an electric vehicle.
In what way did I miss that? Is there one right next to my house? Nope. So who cares?

My life is worth more than whatever cost cutting measures you're falsely accusing Tesla of doing. Go ahead and paste your 3 or 4 links of Tesla drivers who abused the autopilot system as your counter argument. Won't even match the amount of lives saved on camera.
Lives saved by what? Modern safety features standard or optional on most modern cars? Tesla's only advantage is the large amount of extra weight batteries provide which make it less prone to flipping over. Of course that wears out the roads faster but nobody cares because the people with ICE cars will pay taxes at the pump to cover that for you anyway.

And because they can't build an EV that competes with Tesla. Porsche tried and they only had their crown for about a year. And in about 2-3 years, other car manufacturers don't have their own plans of how to deal with battery constraints. Good luck figuring that problem out. They're going to be at the mercy of CATL/Panasonic/Samsung while Tesla has a bargaining chip to keep battery costs low by building out their own production lines.
Give it a couple of years. Up until a certain "president" announced a major EV push nobody really cared about EVs all that much so the manufacturers didn't take it seriously. Now the game will change due to all this idiotic arm-twisting by a certain political party and with lots of other EVs available Tesla will fade into oblivion soon hopefully. I sure as hell won't miss them.

All this tells me is that you're hating on Elon because it's Elon and not really sticking to facts. Sorry, but there's no point in continuing this conversation with you. See ya.
I don't like Elon because he's a pompous ass who built his trashmobiles on my (and other taxpayers') dime. He also turned cars (which I love dearly) into disgusting poorly-built gadgets. Tesla is not really a car, it's more of a computer that happens to have 4 wheels on it. And he's totally lying about the green part because he only makes money when you a buy a new car from him which means it's in his best interest to make these things as disposable as an average iPad/iPhone. I'm sorry the truth hurts but it is what it is. But good luck to you too.

He should be more careful with his statements because I never even bothered to take any more interest in him after that. Wrote him off as nuts or a self promoting a hole.

I’m not even convinced by his statements here because that’s a bit of revisionist history since he gave the state of California such a difficult time when it was trying to take appropriate steps during an emergency pandemic.

I can understand him for not wanting to be remembered as an idiot but that’s not how it went.

I’m the same way with Donald Trump even though he says people should get vaccinated. But he sometimes is less than clear about that like he wants to take both positions.
Sorry for not checking in on this thread in, like, a month but I hear you. Elon can be his own worst enemy sometimes and even he recognizes this.

But the factory things didn’t go as you recalled. The federal government gave the go ahead, the state of California gave the go ahead, but a single bureaucrat in Alameda county in which the Fremont factory is sited was intransigent and tried to interfere with Tesla reopening the factory. This was their violation of state and federal direction not Tesla’s.

It was dramatic and made news and Elon insisted that if anyone was going to be arrested for getting back to work it should just be him but things worked out in the end anyway.
