it just shows that the small phone crew weren’t REALLY about a small phone….they just couldn’t afford a new phone.
The cheapest phone now is the SE ……and it’s selling….go figure 😂🤣
It is a split market. Some like me want the best "small" iPhone I can get. When I'm out and about I don't want or need to lug around a large phone and when I'm home I use my iPad more. So I purchased the 2020 SE and then the 12 mini. Price isn't a concern. Others yeah price is a concern and the $100 savings over the regular 12 or even the same for the year old 11 wasn't enough of an incentive if they actually like or didn't mind the larger size.

Saying that "they just couldn't afford a new phone" is just as silly as saying people get larger iPhones because they can't afford an iPhone AND an iPad! ;)

Actually, the SE is a different mode in comparison to the 12 mini. The 12 mini was for those small but VERY LOUD folks that were unwilling to let go of their iPhone 5’s . This was for them as they wouldn’t even go to the 6,7 or 8

the new SE is now in the 6,7,8 style and the 12 mini for the 5 but with the guts of the 12.

What a complete load of nonsense, sigh, there is always one isn't there lol. I could have brought the 12 Pro Max on day 1 if i wanted, i could go into the Apple store and buy one now, i am not rich but comfortable. However i brought the 12 mini on day 1 as this is the form factor that i like, so i can use it one handed and slip it in my pocket without weighing my trousers down and i also prefer the silver Matte aluminium frame. In fact I would have probably paid the same amount for the 12 mini as that of the 12 Pro Max. Go figure!

The iPhone SE outsold every iPhone 12 model last year, selling over 24.2 million units.

The iPhone SE was the #2 best-selling smartphone of the year - of all brands and makers. Only the iPhone 11 sold more units.
That's because it was available for much longer during the year. The 12 was somewhat delayed and the 12 mini and pro max came even later. They were available for only 3 months of the year while the SE was available for 8.

Looking at the average selling price, the 12 mini brought in more revenue than the SE even though it sold fewer units and it did so in less than half the time.

Touch ID embedded into the display will be a devastating blow to 3rd party repair shops. I understand that some of you fully support that but the fact of the matter is there are no other real options for repairs in some areas. Apple's IRP program is a death sentence for most businesses. Before you jump and that Tim Apple's side just know that to be a member of Apple's IRP means disclosing every transaction your business has and the addition of collecting Name, Email, Phone and Mailing Address of each customer... if you mess up one just one customer sale for a pop-socket you get a $10,000 fine. This shouldn't be legal and is by no means a level playing field. The iPhone 12 screen repair cost between $229-$329 plus tax, that's a joke. I do support the Display & Battery Message, but limiting functionality to 3rd party repairs even with pulled original parts is harmful to the consumer.

Well Apple finally tried it for the very vocal minority who demanded a small phone. However as expected the market has spoken. Most people just don't want small phones anymore. We can put that conversation to rest for good now. On the bright side, the fact that they made that phone in the first place shows that they do indeed listen to the rumblings of their fans and customers online.
I disagree. The Mini was poorly marketed and priced above the competing SE. The SE sells well, so that proves there’s a market for smaller phones. There’s not enough of a market for a small phone that’s priced at a premium over a competing product thats’s selling for cheaper.

Uh yeah, comparing the SE and the 12 series, which launched with a 6-7 month gap, totally reasonable

Finally: An iPhone with no FaceID and TouchID under glass. Steve will cheer out of his grave due to the perfect design of this iPhone. I will buy it straight away!
Doubt he would have condoned a choice like this, he is the reason Apple is strict about these things. (Not you necessarily) but people should really read up on apples history before announcing what they assume he would have allowed.

$100 off of the standard iPhone 12 is a no-brainer “pass.” It wasn’t priced correctly. Anton buying a $699 phone can likely afford another $100 to get the “full” (not: mini) version of the iPhone 12. It just wasn’t priced correctly. Wasn’t named correctly either IMO.
sure, but some people like my wife, for instance, got it for its size, not for $100 off. i understand she's a minority(and not one that spoke out about this either), but i've seen quite a few people with them. maybe they just overestimated the demand.

Poor battery life of the 12 mini is the only reason I didn’t get one. I’m not even happy with the 12 pro battery life comparing to the 8 plus which was excellent

Ugh, this again. I know Kuo has a history of being semi-reliable, but let's just take stock of this particular rumor for a minute. Kuo has been saying that under-screen TouchID is coming "not this year but next year" every year for quite some time (see: 2019, 2020, 2021). That trend began after two years of saying Apple had nixed the technology entirely (see: 2017, 2018).

Yet every time this tired rumor gets recycled, tech journos run to it because it prompts another Mortal Kombat tournament in the comments which, surely this time, will finally decide whether TouchID was better than FaceID.

Kuo has a much better track record than most of the rumor mill, but on this particular technology, his record is atrocious. Maybe we should sit this one out.

Well, I have read the very good autobiography from Walter Isaacson and I still remember how Steve explained the rounded edges of the icons by driving around in his car with the design guy showing him the rounded edges of traffic signs. If you read this book, you get a good understanding of his design philosophy. A nodge surely does not fit into that.

If by nodge you mean notch, then I beg to differ. It’s a design language. A choice to replace the icon home button look. It’s right up his ally

Oh sorry, yes, I mean notch. Still trying to improve my English. But was it a good decision, to remove the home button with a device having a camera starring at you all the time? I really doubt. And if Apple should really release a high end iPhone with no FaceID and TouchID under glass instead, in my opinion this is the proof, that TouchID under glass is the better technology. In terms of usability (intuitively, easy to use), in terms of privacy (only fingerprint in secure enclave) and in terms of design (very clear and simple).

Your links for 2019 and 2020 rumors actually refer to the same rumor about the 2021 model. Neither of this claims has been proven wrong yet. It may still happen later this year.

I think trying to save $100 or $200 on a $1000 device that is used daily for several hours is not making a sensible decision.

How much does it cost to have a cell phone plan yearly?

If I wanted a small phone, I’d be happy to pay MORE for it. Not pretend that I wanted it and balk at the price tag.

These are the same guys driving across town to save a penny on gasoline prices. It’s just a waste of thrift mindedness in my opinion.
