Your analysis is flawed. The footprint of the SE is slightly larger than the 12 mini…yet it sells like hotcakes and the market on that has spoken 🤔
Price, price, price price!! The SE is the 12 Mini killer on that front. The market has spoken and it doesn't care about features. The market is long clamored for a more affordable iPhone. Apple delivered that with the SE. While it lacks on OLED, 2 cameras and edge to edge display, the market does not care.

The SE can be had for 10.00 or less on a postpaid payment plan in the US.
The SE was given away from 49.00 to free on prepaid carriers for the longest in the US. Only thing you needed was to port your number from Cricket to Metro etc...
The SE is a great stopgap device if you break your phone but don't want to drop 700 while we are already halfway through the 12's flagship cycle.
The SE is a great starter phone for younger kids, a great device for the older generation that doesn't need a million bells and whistles.

Who is still asking for finger print ID? That feature is so 2015. Are they bringing back 3g as well?
I like Touch ID much better than faceid. If they bring out a new phone with both, it’s an insta-buy for me. I wasn’t even going to upgrade until they brought it back, free 11 is only reason I did. Also the pandemic made touchid even more important before they allowed face mask unlocking. There are many situations even now, especially for me, that faceid is a huge hassle to unlock with whereas touchid would be seamless.

Damn, I love my 12 Mini but its battery's max capacity is now 90%. I was hoping it would drop into warranty territory before the year was up and they'd give me a replacement phone. (I know they usually replace the battery but sometimes if you're nice they just replace the whole phone IF THEY HAVE THEM). :/

14 Million sold doesn't seem that bad.

I actually love to see this to happen but there's a flaw I could see it happening. The screen cannot detects your fingerprint and you happen to disable Face ID so you can't unlock your phone and you'll ended up entering the passcode to unlock it but I'm sure if this is true then Apple will do something about it. /shrugs

The SE is more than a starter phone - it has the same processor as the iPhone 11. It beats phones being released *today* in speed and processing tests, and it’s a year old.

It is faster than the flagship Samsung Galaxy devices. The only phones that beat the iPhone SE 2020 in performance is the iPhone 12. It’s an amazing device and was named and priced correctly. The mini could have sold well, but not when only $100 off of a flagship standard. And especially not with a stupid name like mini.

If you are any other company 14 million would be a dream come true. Most other companies are lucky to sell a few million of each specific model.

Ill give an example. Samsung sold 75.3 million phones quarter one of 2021. BUT, there is almost 50 different models in various countries ranging from the Galaxy S, Note, A Series, M series etc... Each individual model sells less.

Move into the Apple territory and you sell 7 different models of the iPhone right now. Estimates put it around 69-74 million each quarter. Now 69-74 million divided between 7 different models means that 14 million mini's is not as impressive when its larger sibling 12 is eating the majority of the sales.

Boring releases from Apple. Got the 11Pro because the backcover of my X was broken - and yes, I did like the camera. But from this point on? iP 12, iP 13? I couldn't care less and even the iP14 looks like a boring release. I was hoping and waiting for TouchID to reappear - but in the meantime, I don't care. An Apple Watch to unlock the phone if you have to wear a face mask works quite well. Further more, I now use my Watch for payment and don't need to unlock the phone anymore.

A device with the size and weight of my iP7, TouchID only (FaceID removed), an awesome camera and a USB-C port like the one Apple uses on iPad Pro? I guess this would be a buy - maaaaaaybe. A new design? I carry my iPhone in an ultra slim case, so the only thing I see is the display and the black case - so does anyone care if the the frame is round or edgy?

And it is not only me. When have you been asked if you're holding the NEW iPhone - the last time? Guess a girl asked me about the 11Pro and just because she wanted to buy one.

I will be excited again if the "The Expanse" terminals become reality. But until then I'm glad that I don't have to upgrade my OS permanently to the next buggy OS version.

Smartphones are no longer exciting.

For a Mac that's supposed to be announced in July, this has been the dried I've seen MR.

I have to agree with Apple on this one. I personally miss the days when an Apple event was special. These tools are ruining it for everyone, it's like having a drunk parent tell you what you're getting for Christmas.

Shame about the Mini, absolutely my favourite form factor they have put out in a long time. The only reason I didn't get one was I have a 10 still, so not really in the market for an upgrade yet. I was hoping it would do well enough to stick around, if not become the main SKU. I don't really need nor want a phone slightly smaller than a tablet and don't really get much out of the bigger screen real estate.

Guess it's on me for not getting one to support it, but I really thought the Mini would sell very well, if not the best. I guess I am in the minority, but man do I hate the giant phone trend.
