Has anyone been following the development of this game?

It's an action RPG styled after Diablo. It's single player only, with a Windows only map editor. The company making it is Runic Games, which has some members of the original Diablo team, like Max Schaefer.

The game is set in the mining town Torchlight. As the miners dig deeper into the earth, they uncover ancient civilizations and monsters. You play as an adventurer with a cat or dog companion looking for treasure in the mines.

The game is being released for Windows in 10 days and the website says there is a Mac version for 10.6 in development.

I think the game looks good for casual players and will give hardcore players a fix while they wait for Diablo 3.

I hope we don't have to wait too long. The free MMO they'll be launch based off this game also sounds great.

Wow, impressive screens. I assume but can anyone conirm if this game is coop? I saw something about Steam. Is it playable on Steam only or will local networks be supported? Thanks!

This Co-optimus link says no coop but I thought that is what a game like this is all about? No?

They are releasing the single player campaign first while working on the multiplayer version. Methinks they need some capital and they are a small company that can only focus on so much at once.

I played Mythos and of course numerous Blizzard games (these are ex-Blizzard North employees). This hopefully will live up to their pedigree.

Maybe it's me, but a while back i saw some Diablo III screens and the Torchlight screens look better to me (more stylized).

    I could see that.
Well since Torchlight is a new IP they have some more flexibility in designing their game art style. When you have a well respected IP like Diablo, you don't have have as much of creative muscle to flex without sending the fanboys into a tizzy. Remember the "rainbows and ponies" early pics of Diablo3? The internets were all a flutter on how they ruined their game.

I am looking forward to both actually. I just hope I will be able to run D3 at a reasonable framerate.

I thought Torchlight was Travis Baldree? The guy from the wonderful 'Fate' family friendly dungeon crawl?

Anyway, I think this looks great ... but tough time of the year - Risen is only a couple weeks old, getting Borderlands soon, Dragon Age in early Nov. Divinity 2 in January ...

From what I understand Travis is from Fate. Max Schaefer is from Bliz North. Both got together when they worked for Ping0(part of Flagship Studios) and did Mythos, which never was officially released but in beta for a long time. Mythos grew into a good game as well. Shame it went bye bye when Flagship did.

It is a shame ... Hellgate was pretty mediocre on release but over time became much better as well - not great, but decent enough that they shouldn't have died as a studio. Mythos looked good.

    Hopeful for this.

Wow, the game looks great! I'll have to try out the PC demo whenever that gets released.

I wonder if the Mac and PC versions will be multiplayer/coop compatible?

I've been playing the demo, it's pretty good! I'll probably get the game next week.

I'm not sure ... but I went to start both this and Borderlands last night - did play both, but this dominated my evening!

Wow, looks awesome, I will be watching this a lot more closely now. I wonder if they will throw us Mac users a bone and if we buy the PC version will they allow us to reinstall when the mac version comes out? :D

I don't think they will have multiplayer in the game for a while, it will probably be in the separate free to play Torchlight MMO.

FYI: There is a free demo via Steam.
    If booting steam through Crossover:
Must adjust the launch options for Torchlight
In launch option box type: SAFEMODE=1

Otherwise the demo/game will not boot. It is set up as a free demo through steam and $20 to buy download client.

To answer a previous question about converting the PC purchase into a Mac purchase. I would be willing to bet that you will be forced to buy the Mac version of the game. You will be paying $20 to play for a few months and then pay another $20 (probably $50 knowing Mac game prices) when the Mac version comes out.

I will second that you will have to buy it again (though I disagree on pricing - Mac games don't cost more, just the same as the PC version did at release ... 3 years later). Not only that, I assume that unlike Spiderweb or Basilisk, who allow you to do a 'license transfer' (swap your PC for Mac version), there will likely not be such an option for Torchlight - though if you grab it on their site that might be different.

A cool thing with the game - there is a 'netbook mode' which optimizes the game for netbooks ... didn't see much difference than the defaults it ran on my Lenovo s10, but it is still a cool setting.

It's a fun game and certainly worth 20$. I wish there was multiplayer, but if you like loot collecting dungeon crawls, it is worth it.

I downloaded the demo last night in Steam and man is it awesome, I really enjoyed it! I will be buying the game, but right now I'm not sure if I will hold out for the Mac version or buy the PC version.

I tried the demo yesterday, it was great fun, multiplayer would have "made" the game though.

Are they going to patch it in, or are we going to have to wait for their MMO?

Incidentally, anyone notice the distinctive stylings of Matt Uelmen in the music?
