Aware of the difference in image and raw etc But the apple guys advised
me to use it before going into my Aperture 3. But again only sending
image in jpeg format and iphoto should support an jpeg image.

I think you're not telling the whole story here. Sending a jpeg formatted picture through e-mail is not in any way CPU or GPU intensive, nor even hard drive intensive, it has no reason whatsoever to be beach balling.

Either you're doing something else you're not aware of that is messing things up, or maybe, just maybe, your hard drive is bad.

Agree. For all we know and despite what is in the thread, it COULD be a HDD problem. Probably not though^^

Not normal.

There's a reason why Apple has the highest customer satisfaction in the computer industry, and it's not due to "corrected photos" and "pile of junk."

Uh oh...

Wow, to much tool bags, not enough try to figure his problem out.

He wasn't told by the Genius that he shouldn't use iPhoto for RAW so why should he not use it? I would expect it to work just fine also if I'm just using it to organize the photos, for editing not so much.

If he was sending an email and using a JPG then it it most likely a Hard Drive issue as stated above. Its not at all uncommon for a new drive to die.

OP: I suggest that after you try and demo your issue again, ask if they can run a test on your HDD. Also what size was the JPG used?

Either way it should not beach ball for "hours." That points to it being a hardware problem.

my 11" MBP was beach balling out of control yesterday. I made an appointment today and the genius made a log of my problems in "console" to send to Apples' engineers.

The remedy that I found that helped me was to to repair and verify permissions, and then I did this:

I turned my MBP off and then held shift+command+option and then pressed the power button. Release all the keys, and then turn on the computer.

Once it is all up and running, go to User/Library/Cache and then delete the folder contents, but NO FOLDERS. Empty the trash and then reboot and it should work. This worked for me. I had beach balls out of control and it would last forever.

If you search this forum for "beach balls", that thread should come up as it is only a few days old (well it was a year or so old, but the advice was new: ) )

Hope this helps...

Approx 1,000 mainly in raw Also taken Apples advice has to learn Iphoto then go into Aperture 3 which
i have.

I assume English isn't your first language because this statement is somewhat unclear.

So, you're saying that the person in the Apple Store told you to use Aperture, which is something you already have? Ok, then what happened when you imported these RAW files into that application? Same thing or something different?

Are you having any other issues with your machine? I don't think you've described any. If the only thing screwing up is iPhoto and the people in the store already identified problems with image and database files, then maybe the pile of junk is iPhoto. I've never even installed it, so I don't know if it's good or not. I use Lightroom.

If you are unhappy with this machine and you feel that it is not working for you in the way you desire, then maybe you should try to return it and buy something else you like better.

Very true which lead to me buying one in the first place, Just massive
disappointment when something as simple as this should work.
Especially after files being removed and then library being rebuilt.
After all of the above the Apple guy said he has only known of
iphoto libraries being rebuilt is when its an old mac and you start
using the updates for it off the Apple web site.

Hi no other issues has yet.
Regarding the Apple guy he said before you just go straight into Aperture 3
have a play with iphoto
I would personally have a new machine than go back to PC

Right gutted have to cancel trip this morning to Apple store has
Mrs wants to leave early for a weekend break in Newcastle.

Gutted have to do this next Tuesday.

You clearly have a corrupted iPhoto library so why not just rebuild it or create a new one? (Hold down Opt+Cmd whilst launching iPhoto)

Hint hint: If you're having trouble with only one application it's that application thats causing problems not the entire computer.

Why do people say 'opt' when there is no 'opt' key? I've got fn, ctrl, alt and cmd. No opt!

Get lightroom 3 or aperture. Personally I use lightroom 3 for all my raw files. All my photos for that matter.

have you used disk utility to repair permissions and repair the disk yet?

Have you tried wiping the drive doing a clean install and and trying some of the tasks with generic pictures. this certainly is not normal as others have said yea dont use iphoto for raw files but still that is clearly not your issue.

How much space is free on your drive? i know this has probably been discussed or considered but RAW files add up quick so its just a thought.

but it could be a failing drive.

Because not everyone is using an International/European KB. Granted i could've spelt it out but i was being lazy.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking he told you to try iPhoto first to see if it would work for you. If you haven't used iPhoto or Aperture before, I'd probably recommend the same thing as it works perfectly fine for most home users. Now that you know iPhoto isn't for you, especially if you want your app to house Raw images, I'd pick up Aperture and move everything over

So you're trying to manage 1000 raw images in iphoto? Really?

This is an ID 10T problem.
