It's gimmicky for basic aps. But it's a killer feature on pro apps so it's great for the MacBook Pro. They need to make an external keyboard with it!!

I think this feature can become useful only when softwares support it.
Of course the standard macOS apps and apple softwares will support it immediately, but how about the other programs ?

Example: I am using VMs a lot; initially, I expect the touch bar to at best interfere (is it possible to display the standard keys that the host OS uses ?), and in the long term, it may unlock some benefit (special keys that can be wired to host OS functions, or VM level actions like pause, snapshot, etc).

Example: I am doing a lot of photography, and use Lightroom; when will it make use of this is not clear, and probably only as part of the "Creative Cloud" (that I refuse to subscribe to: I am not renting software), and not of the standalone version. And in that field, Apple is absent (they killed Aperture, and claimed Photo would replace it, yet it is a joke of a RAW processing program).

I am also doing a lot of programming, and I do not expect emojis to help me much in that area. :)

I'd want the 15 and $2400 is just insane for a laptop. I don't believe the touch bar to be gimmicky, but it's certainly not worth it. That, and I have an old-by-modern-standards-but-still-awesome 2011 MBP.

It pains me to say it, but I think Microsoft won the "new product war" this week.

I didn't want a new MBP because of the ports. I use USB 3, and my desk set up is reliant on an HDMI monitor, so it works for me right now. Not planning to get the new MBP for a while, but watching the keynote, it sure looks enticing. The touch bar is really cool

It's one of the few new technologies Apple has introduced that has me pondering when I would ever find a practical use for it. I do use the current function keys to control my volume and music playback, and screen brightness, but having Touch Bar that changes dynamically depending on app means the controls I want may not always be conveniently accessible on the top row.

Usually I can at least kid myself into believing I'll find a use for the cool new thing from Apple. But on this occasion I am really struggling, and the pricing certainly isn't pulling me in either.

You know, as I was watching them demonstrate it, I kept thinking everything they are doing kind of points to the utility of having an actual touch screen instead: your eyes are on the screen already, and you would have more flexibility/space with what you could touch. I felt like they were almost making Microsoft look right with providing a touch-screen interface.

Photoshop pros that require fine adjustments will not use fat fingers and sliders on the Touch Bar to adjust an image.
I don't agree at all. We would. However, I acknowledge that how could I get used to these tools when majority of work at home is on external display and keyboard. I don't know anyone who works exclusively on the MacBook pro itself.

I use Lightroom as well and look forward to implementation at some point. But yeah, it's going to be a while before apps catch up to this. So I'm fine with the 2015 MBP I bought a few months ago. Also the price hike is just WTF worthy.

Why didn't they implement a touchscreen and a touch bar? (Answer: because they don't want to cannibalize iPad sales).

Pulling me in? Not as much as a hypnotic glowing Apple would do!

Touch Bar is just another part of the MacBook to clean off constantly from the smudges it will show. Apple's less than half-*** attempt battling touchscreen two in ones where other notebooks have it for their entire screen and a stylus if you don't want to smudge it up.

Gimme a break for a tiny strip of a touchscreen that becomes hypnotic. Microsoft Surface Book i7 is calling. Look at thei ads for it and Surface Studio. This week, Microsoft won and Apple lost. No contest. Surface Book i7 is no doubt the better overall device and with 16h battery life.

It is useful in that it reduces the number of times you have to take you fingers off the keyboard. But since I use my external mechanical keyboard a lot it is not all that useful to me.

"Eff" the new Touch Bar, and "eff" the new Surface Book "with Performance Base." Both are way too expensive for what you're getting, IMO.

My eyes are now on something like an ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW, but I'll wait until it gets refreshed with a more current NVIDIA chip.

I think it's a wait and see thing. The pros are that it's just awesome and useful. The cons are it's some kind of panic move to do something new, and it's a kludge.

Might be ok....or not

WTF

This thing is gimmick at best. Also, Apple is saying you can't have fun with it, so app developer is under tight Apple control.

https://techcrunch.com/2016/10/27/apple-says-no-fun-allowed-on-the-touch-bar/

In the Windows PC world, plenty of laptops have touchscreen now that are reasonably priced. People can start making their own overlay application or update their software to have a bar of any size that would fit on the touchscreen. Why have to deal with a tiny touch bar? Even facebook could update their website for example so that chat can have bigger icons for replying by touch using emoticons.

Absolutely pointless update.

So now after seeing it in use, is it pulling you all in? Its got me!
It's a pretty thingy, but it doesn't pull me in ~ sorry.
I have really bad eyes, and while touch id and a dynamic visual helper in some situations seems fantastic, the inability to see what's on the bar without any accessibility support is not pulling me in.

Do you know when they are coming out with the 10-series chip?

How often do people take screenshots on the Mac? Not often.

It's great that you like it but I think many will find it's easier to do many tasks just using the trackpad.

I take about 200~ screenshots a day lol, it's part of my job and what I do, but I see what you're saying, the idea that the bar can make anything easier is nice. Gimmick or not, you know when people sit down to start coding, we're going to have shell apps that do nothing but give us nice little features on the mini screen down below. You're just not being creative enough. Sometimes I have long passwords I need to copy paste, or, god knows what else. It would be nice if LastPass would display randomly generated passwords, and if I like it, I just hit " paste ", and bam, password generated, takes away from on screen real estate, which is hard to come by on a 13".. there are literally millions of uses I can think of for this thing. I was going to get a new MacBook with the dual core I7 anyways, this " gimmick " just makes it that much more enjoyable

They've already released the 1060/1070/1080 mobile.

Rumours state "early 2017" for the 1050 & 1050 Ti. Those would be what I would expect to be seeing in something like an ASUS ZenBook Pro.

I want it in the Zenbook, not a thick ROG machine. Performance jump from the 9 series to 10 series is like 60% increase. It's a really big jump.

I may cancel my Dell order and wait.
