I've noticed that if you have issues with TouchID it sometimes helps to recan your prints. First unlock your phone and observe your finger position very carefully. Then proceed to rescan your finger. When you get to the "adjust your grip" part of the scan, replicate the approximate position you had when unlocking the device above, moving slightly between each scan. It may also help to do the first part of the scan with your finger at a slight angle, mimicking your real usage.

You don't have to do the Touch ID setup to fix your print. You can help the phone relearn them. Go to into settings and then Touch ID. In there you will see a list with all scanned fingers. If you hold your thumb on the home button you will see the corresponding print get highlighted. Just touch your home button repeatedly until it works 100%.

Very cool. I never knew about this.

Pretty sure Touch ID is software related. My 5S works 100% of the time since 7.1. Before that it's was half and half.

My iPhone 6 I only kept for a month was about 90%.

It's software related.

my 5s was bad sometimes I could not even get it to read my main thumb. but the 6+ has been about as perfect as it gets unless my hands ae damp or I have glue or such on my fingers.

I have been pleasantly surprised. I never had a 5S, but my friend does and it occasionally misreads her's, but I've never had an issue except waking it up sometimes doesn't read until I raise my finger and try again, but I don't get that "try again" message.

I agree. TouchID was not very good on my 5S. I captured several prints of the same finger, but still, I would only get it to open my iPhone maybe half of the times. I ended up just using my passcode instead. TouchID on the 6 on the other hand works great! :)

100%? Hardly. I wish. It's more like 7/10 times in my experience. It can also sometimes be slow.

Also, beyond just the finger scanning, the idea of Touch ID is to eliminate needing to punch in passwords or passcodes, right? Yet in apps like the App Store even after you've set up touch id it'll sometimes ask you "to continue using Touch ID with the App Store please input your Apple ID password". Uh, what the heck? That totally defeats the purpose. It feels half baked. Like Apple is holding back or doesnt trust its users to rely entirely on Touch ID. Quite frustrating. One of the things I hate about iOS and the App Store is the need to input your password every single time you place an order. I thought Touch ID would eliminate that but not really.

And in other apps that use it, like Dropbox, Touch ID is very very slow.

Make no mistake I think Apple has the best finger print scanner on any device and for the most part I like it on my iPhone 6. But it can definitely use some improving. And certainly not 100% reliable. Hopefully one day as they improve it.

sadly my hands sweat too much for me to use it. but I don't blame apple for that, just stinks that i have to turn it off and can't use it

Can you clarify what makes you think that it is relearning the fingerprint? I was of the understanding that the highlight was just to remind you which number print (e.g. Finger 1) related to which finger.

I put my dominant thumb finger in twice....first was regular and the second time I got more of the bottom part and extreme sides, I can basically use the lower middle joint of my thumb to unlock and my phone unlocks instantly, its kind of annoying when I just want to press home to see what time it is and it unlocks...but its also good!

You can try this. Scan your thumb as you normally would middle part right on the button. The print will flash. But if you try an extreme side of your thumb it will probably not work. Now scan the middle part again. But vey very slowly work your way to the side of your thumb. If it fails move back a little and try again. Doing this all the way the print will now recognize the side of your thumb. But it will also forget the middle part.

I noticed the slightest hange in temperature of your finger greatly affects he effective Touch ID is. A little bit warmer or colder or even damper and it won't read.

Intersting. I did notice that it it doesn't seem very accurate at recognising the print at this point but hadn't drawn the same conclusion or gone as far are re-training it. Thanks for the information, I appreciate it.

I've just restored my iPhone and setup as a new device and I'm still finding Touch I.D. is very flakey. It's definitely, for me at least, an issue with iOS 8.1. It's a real shame as i was loving the feature after upgrading from iPhone 5S. Hopefully Apple fix it again in the near future. The number of issues I have with iOS 8.1 is absolutely ridiculous.

believe it or not, i find that my 5s' touchID worked near flawlessly.

my 6+ works maybe 95% as well as my 5s.

Touch ID fails so often, actually, that I've just decided to turn it off. It isn't worth the trouble.

What do you mean you were "loving the feature after upgrading from iPhone 5S"? Didn't your 5S have TouchID? Or did you mean you're finding TouchID worse on the 6 compared to the 5s? If so, that's extremely weird because many, if not most, of us are finding TouchID better on the 6. Maybe defective hardware instead of iOS 8.1 bug?

Touch I.D almost never worked on the 5S through all versions of iOS I had installed. I sold it before installing iOS 8.1. The 6 Plus was working perfectly until iOS 8.1 when it suddenly stopped working. Definitely an issue with 8.1 on this device.

Touch ID on my iphone 5s works 100% of the time whereas the touch ID on note 4 only works, id say 85 %

For those stating that the Touch ID doesn't work very well on your iPhone 5s. Did it always not work well or did it start after the phone got some age on it?

One of the best things of the iphone 6 is the new version of touch ID, after using my iphone since release I never have a single day that touch id has failed

I can't say the same for my iphone 5S because sometimes touch id fail

The new version of touch id is perfect and it is one of top features to buy a new iphone 6

Lucky you. Mine fails a few times per day and has to be reprogrammed at least weekly. True of the 6 I had and the 6 plus I currently have.
