Maybe because the IPad Pro has its own enclave and it is programmed to work with faceid
This -No Apple devices has ever had both.

The thing with Touch and Face ID also is that, besides these new keyboards, you can’t remove or replace the sensor/camera(s). Touch/Face ID is tied to the device and forces you to type of you ever break the sensor. It’s not perfect, but it does add security

For these new iMacs to as safe as iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, the Touch-ID keyboard should be tied to the iMac somehow.

I’m assuming Apple has already thought of this. But it’s going to be interesting to see what it takes to unpair and bypass it.

No idea on price yet.
From the M1 configuration article posted earlier:
Apple also notes that it is possible to upgrade from the standard Magic Keyboard with the entry-level ‌iMac‌ to the Magic Keyboard with ‌Touch ID‌ for an additional $50. All base configurations will also offer the option of upgrading to the Magic Keyboard with ‌Touch ID‌ and Numeric Keypad from the Magic Keyboard with ‌Touch ID‌ for an additional $30.
There's no pricing on the keyboard as a standalone item though as Apple isn't selling it unbundled yet.

I also don't really like expanded keyboards but maybe that is the answer--lots of wasted space for a number keypad I will never use. But I guess that might be the solution. No idea on price yet.

The current standalone Magic Keyboard with numeric keypad (no touch ID) is $129 in silver / $149 in space grey.

Upgrading to include the Touch ID keyboard on the new iMacs is +$50 for Standard and + $80 for Expanded.

If I were to guess, based on this information, once they do start standalone sales the price for the expanded touch ID magic Keyboard is probably going to be $179 for silver and $199 for the colored aluminum (if they even offer those standalone)

Extended with Touch ID would be in my wishlist if could use with other computer models in the future.

For the price the ipad pro should have touch ID in the power button.
Oh man... I thought it did. I don't really like FaceID on my iPhone X and assumed the new Pro would have TouchID as an alternative. Disappointing but thanks for pointing it out 👍

Disappointing if the rational was to limit customers to buy the Folio keyboard for iPad Pro. My set up is a M1 Mac Mini in the office, and an iPad Pro for on the move. I'd rather just own and carry one Magic Keyboard with me.

I'd be surprised if this wasn't possible a year from now.

This does create some weird limitations if you want to use the iPad plugged into external displays

Exactly - with the new stage manager option allowing full screen real estate on an external monitor, there are users who, just like with a laptop, want to attach their iPad to a dock, and use external KB and mouse with the iPad closed. IE no Face ID. Of course, we first need to overcome the fact that it locks when you close the cover, but again this is no different to a laptop, so just needs a similar setting.
