I disagree with experience. The iPod Touch is a fantastic device (unless someone already has a solid smartphone) and would make a great gift. The hardware will last for years, though the software will inevitably get outdated after a while - but for what computing device is that not true?

This is a perfect example in my case. I know dragons will come forth and test my flame suit, but as a smartphone goes, I sold my battery eating Android and I'm perfectly content with my older BlackBerry. Not only does it do just about everything I expect from a smartphone.

I can go a full day of heavy use with using GPS navigation and Google Maps, Internet browsing, email second to none, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and it's a decent music player as well.

The best part is the battery life despite heavy application use, I don't need to scramble for a way to charge it back up before noon.

At the end of the day, my battery still has 3/4th of a charge in it. A neat bonus is being able to use my phone as a Bluetooth modem with my MacBook Pro.

Gaming naturally sucks on a BlackBerry phone and my 64GB iPod Touch is perfect for just that. I have the current model in black with a shell covering the back to keep away the scratches and many people mistake it as an iPhone. I just tell them "yeah" and the nosy types move on...

"bad" gift? If I went to a homeless shelter and gave them an iPod, they would love it. So its not "bad". Whoever needs it or wants it will love it, and thats that.

But...

The iPod touch, hardware-wise, is very similar to the iPhone 4. The only reason the parts are old is that, well, the iPod touch 4g IS a little old. It was launched around the same time as the iPhone 4. However, I doubt the iPod touch 5g will be released until the iPhone 5 hits the shelves. They didn't make an iPod touch 3GS when the iPhone of the same name was released. We'll just have to wait and see. :| (FYI: I have an iPod touch 4g, and I'm using it to write this. I named it Esteban.)

I disagree with the article, but I will say. Why not for a few $100 more get a bigger and better iPad? I mean seems silly to get a touch when for a few more $ you can get an iPad that can do so much more, not to metion screen real estate and superior internals. I get the allure of the touch, compact, small, can do just about anything great for kids, but IMO you'd be better off saving some extra and just getting an iPad.

Problem is, iPads don't fit in your pocket. Bigger isn't always better. If you want something portable, saving a little more for an iPad doesn't make too much sense.

Then when the new iPad comes out in April 2012 he will say the current one is junk because it has a A5 processor which will be out of date and it does not have the iPad's new Retina display.

Don't listen to this idiot. Buy whatever Apple product you want even if it is a older model. Apple makes great products that work and they stand by them with great support.

I agree with the article... it's 2 year old tech at this point that has worse camera quality than my mobile phone from 6 years ago. It's a fun little player but it really should have gotten a slight upgrade.

And I own one of these... I picked it up in October of 2010.

That is exactly why I have a Touch. I used a simple cellphone and don't feel any need to combine devices. Besides, when the battery dies on the Touch I can still make calls and when the battery dies in the phone I can still play Mah Jong.

<update> My daughter bought me an iPad2 32gig for Christmas. I may have to get bigger pockets so I can keep both the iPad and iPod Touch with me.

Exactly that was the point of the article. Now watch as the people who disagrees with the article will want to "upgrade" when/if the next touch is announced. The current touch is a joke.

iThings hold their resale value far better than most gadgets. Buy one now, sell it when the next model appears. Simple solution. Consider any loss of funds a "rental fee" which, in most cases, will be a very small fee. I sold my iPad 1 exactly 11 months after its release for $25 less than what I paid for it new. That comes out to just over $2/month rental fee.

It's possible to disagree with the claim that 'the iPod Touch is one of the worst tech gifts to give to someone in 2011' AND also buy a new iPod model a year from now (or even sooner). You seem to think it's contradictory or something, so: you're wrong.

The problem isn't so much the a4, which is very capable. The bottleneck is the ram

Agreed... the current gen iPhone could have kept the A4 processor but it really should have gotten a RAM upgrade and a rear camera upgrade at the very very least for the price point it is at.

Indoor pics taken on my iPod Touch 4 are unusable for anything and the RAM causes some limitations with apps as well as the iOS itself.

But with that said... there really is no competition to the iPod Touch either so Apple can get away with not upgrading the 4 and nobody can do anything about it. We can bitch and moan but Apple really could care less cause they make even more $$ by selling us outdated tech that they recolored white. :) :apple:

It is also highly probable to agree with me as I am right, which would make you wrong...

I also find it very difficult to slip an iPad into my shirt pocket.[/QUOTE]

Hahahahah I am actually pissing myself

Hate to say it, but the Gizmodo article is right, to some extent. The iPod Touch has been marketed by Apple as a gaming device, yet some of the latest and greatest games on the App Store require an A5 processor to run at all, and many others will see reduced graphics when played on an older A5 device.

I'm not saying that the Touch isn't fun and great and all, but every other iOS device got a drastic hardware upgrade other than the Touch. Apple deciding to keep year-old tech in it makes it a substantially worse value by comparison, and an upsetting development for those that thought they were only holding off a year for an upgrade.

On the plus side: my iPad 1 remains relevant a bit longer due to continued A4 prevalence.

I don't understand why this thread even exists. I mean, it doesn't matter who said that X gift is the worst gift of the year or whatever, you should be able to form your own opinion as to whether you want to buy it or not.
A nano wouldn't suffice? Just saying, when for just a few hundredmore bucks, why not get more screen real estate. If having your ipod on your bike tickles your fancy, then go for it! :) All I am saying is, for those 99% of people who don't care or need for it to be on their bike, it just seems silly IMO. Thats all, we all have opinions! I am glad you shared yours! Have fun!
Fixed that for you.

This is not surprising, Apple did not update this year's iPod touch, Samsung galaxy players have far surpassed iPod touches.

Disappointing year for iPod touches.

Thx I completely forgot about this. I see they also have device at 5 inch sized tablet. Is it upgradeable to ICS?

I don't know about the idiots at Gizmodo, but I would love to get an iPod touch from someone, it means they actually spent a decent chunk of money on MEEEE.

You should be grateful for the gifts you receive, not shun them because of some lame old rant about specs. Nevertheless....Many children I knew received iPod touches, and they ALL LOVED them. I see them messing around with FaceTime etc...amazing tech that kids can have. certainly a better investment than a DS.

Consider the source. Bitter much?

Only time an iPod Touch would be a lame gift is if the person receiving has an iPhone.

And yet, as an iPhone 4S owner I`ve just gone and grabbed a cheap 1st gen iPod touch to use purely as a music player. (literally nothing else on there at all)
My reasoning is that I`m not at all bothered if the iPod gets knocked around, scuffed, scratched, battered etc and if I lose or drop it, no biggie it was cheap.
I`ll use it in places where I wouldn`t even take my Iphone or iPad.

And, yes, anyone turning their nose up at one for a gift would NOT be on my gift list next year ;)
