I'd say the vast majority of iPod touch owners buy them to listen to music on, watch videos, play games, and surf the web. Most probably don't know/care what an A4 chip is, or why they would want one.

Most people, if given the choice between an A4 from Apple and from Audi as a gift, would choose the Audi :D

Personally I prefer the iPod Touch to the iPhone because until the last update it was the largest capacity flash memory iPod, it is thinner and much cheaper. Still, the Gizmondo article rightly points out that in the current iteration last-gen hardware is being used, unlike prior versions that more or less kept up with what the iPhone had. Apple may be positioning it as the budget alternative to the iPhone and extending the usability of custom last-gen components like the CPU. For the video game market there should be a latest-gen tech model sold alongside the rest, especially now that SONY and Nintendo are reclaiming this market with new portable consoles.

I agree with the article and think that Apple should have updated the touch with the iPhone with similar if not identical improvements (excluding the phone parts obviously). But, assuming Apple had a good reason to not update, I am expecting a rather large upgrade the next time around.

Like others have said, it's Gizmodo, a "tech" blog

Take their advice with a grain of salt, they don't know your needs, they just want to stir stuff up and get hits

I disagree with the article, but I will say. Why not for a few $100 more get a bigger and better iPad? I mean seems silly to get a touch when for a few more $ you can get an iPad that can do so much more, not to metion screen real estate and superior internals. I get the allure of the touch, compact, small, can do just about anything great for kids, but IMO you'd be better off saving some extra and just getting an iPad.

It would be extremely difficult, not to mention dangerous, to attach an iPad to my handlebars. The iPod, however, fits perfectly and, due to its size, is unobtrusive and doesn't block my vision.

I also find it very difficult to slip an iPad into my shirt pocket.

"Instead of paying X for a gift, why not pay literally twice as much for something which might be a terrible fit for its recipient's needs."

I do think it likely that the iPod touch will eventually be updated with the A5, there is no way it's getting the 4S's camera module. It wouldn't even fit without making the device considerably thicker.

I could live with a thicker Touch.....especially if it had a GPS radio in it. :D

Really don't care one way or the other about the camera.

Sounds like you need one of these...

I swear that this person knows nothing about what they are talking about.
I got my iPod solely for gaming, music, and internet. Exactly what it's intended for. The iPod is the freakin' best device out there that ISN'T 3G device. My cousin got one because she's like, six! She does NOT need a phone! And she loves the games, the facetime, the messaging app (It's free messaging for a six year old!), the camera, ect.

She doesn't care if it's a fifteen MP camera, an A65 processor (I mean, milliseconds don't matter to ANYONE!), or anything. I use mine for relatively the same purposes as she does, and it's a nice break from my Android phone.

Anyways, sorry if this comment is sloppy.

I disagree with experience. The iPod Touch is a fantastic device (unless someone already has a solid smartphone) and would make a great gift. The hardware will last for years, though the software will inevitably get outdated after a while - but for what computing device is that not true?

I'm buying a 64GB white iPod touch tonight, as when the next one comes out, the prices on the 4th current gen won't drop that much I guess?

worst tech gifts

Its extreme to say it's the worst gift, but as an owner of a 1st generation iPod touch, I'm increasingly finding myself left out of all the fun stuff that's being offered to the newer gens. I love my "touch" and love the fact that it slides into my pocket (try that with a iPad) but it's too expensive to be picking up one every year or so.

A nano wouldn't suffice? Just saying, when for just a few more bucks, why not get more screen real estate. If having your ipod on your bike tickles your fancy, then go for it! :) All I am saying is, for those 99% of people who don't care or need for it to be on their bike, it just seems silly IMO. Thats all, we all have opinions! I am glad you shared yours! Have fun!

If iPod touch is not discontinued, it's inevitable that next iteration gets a newer chip (A5 or A6), otherwise it will struggle handling future iOS updates.

What do you think of all the people who pointed out that the cheapest iPad will cost at least $100 more than the most expensive iPod Touch, and could easily be several hundred dollars, i.e. twice as much as an iPod Touch? On what planet is this 'just a few more bucks'?

If 99% of people don't need an iPod on a bike it doesn't mean that the iPad is therefore a better purchase for those 99%, which is what you've implied.

I'm glad when people share their opinions we can ascertain their worth with such clarity!

It was kinda expected especially from gizmodo, i have a feeling they are still pissed about that prototype iphone case...

I disagree with Gizmodo completely. The current iPod Touch is a great device and has more than enough power and features for the people who would use one. I'm still using a 2G 16GB Touch and it does just fine.

I don't expect the iPod Touch to get much better than it is now. Apple has absolutely no reason to offer a larger screen(iPad) or a faster/more capable device(iPhone). They own the market for MP3 players and let's be honest that market won't be around forever.

I'll repeat what I posted earlier on this:

For ease of argument, let's stick with the pricing on the Apple Store. The iPod Touch starts at $199, while the iPad starts at $499. It's $300 (150%) more expensive! It is ridiculous to suggest that these would be in the same "gift" category.

What, no one should give an 8 GB iPod Touch? Okay, let's compare 32 GB models. The iPod goes for $299, while the iPad goes for $599. That's twice as much! Yes, if you're filthy stinking rich, the difference is pretty small. However, there is a huge difference between giving someone a $300 gift and giving them a $600 gift.

The iPod Touch and iPad are not in the same price range. Period. Maybe spending twice as much (or more) on something is only a "few more bucks" to you, but not to most people. How can you possibly suggest these are in the same category?

Let me put it another way: how ridiculous would it sound for someone to say "why buy someone a $300 gift when you can get a better gift for $600"? Of course you can get a better gift for twice the price! However, that's because it's twice the price! Unless something only costs a "few bucks", twice the price is not "a few bucks more".

Pay more money for a device that totally limits what I can be doing while using it........ that makes sense. What if I get it to use while I'm not in the house, like walking down the street? How the hell would I want to be carrying around an ipad outside? Do I need to wear a bag or backpack just to listen to music, not to mention I might want to exercise while listening to it.

And there's a better alternative, where?... The iPod Touch is amazing for what it is. You won't find anything else nearly as good. It's one of a kind. It's the perfect gift for a kid besides a smartphone.

I think the article writer doesn't know what he's talking about.

Par for the course for Gizmodo.

Telling someone to buy or not buy based on specs is the height of illogical thinking. iPod Touch purchases should always be decided based on the unique needs of the receiver.

I don't read stupid reviews from upper class people who think anyone can just get a iPhone with a contract or a iPad. Contracts are the worse or pay a lot for a iPad. Also a iPad is not that mobile as you can't put it in your pocket.

I still ordered a iPod Touch 64 GB white from eBay. Not that my current 3rd gen touch is no good. It still works but I want a camera not to take pictures but to record video and the Retina display.

iPod Touches are great because as long as you have WiFi which I have where I live I can stream tons of internet radio without having to turn on the computer. Also I can walk around streaming music as long as I don't stray to far from the router.
